Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to swap USD to naira only when the rate suits you

Holding dollars and converting to naira later: how the rate you get is built, why nobody can call the market, and a calmer way to time it.

The short answer

You can only swap when the rate suits you if you hold dollars somewhere that lets you convert on your own timing and see the rate and fee before you approve. Nobody can reliably predict the naira, so the practical approach is to compare the offered rate with the mid-market rate, convert in stages against known naira needs, and avoid converting under deadline pressure.

Every Nigerian in the US has had the conversation: the naira is at one level this week, someone says it will move next week, and the family needs money on Friday. Waiting for the perfect rate is tempting and rarely works. What does work is having the choice: dollars held where you can convert when you decide, and a clear idea of what you are comparing.

What the rate you are offered is made of

Any USD to naira conversion has two cost parts: the margin built into the rate and any separate fee. The reference point is the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices in the wholesale market. The gap between that and the rate you are offered is the provider's margin. A provider with a low fee can still cost more if its margin is wide, so compare the total naira you receive for the same dollars.

For remittances into Nigeria, a March 2026 summary by Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie of the CBN's remittance circular says IMTO pricing is guided by Bloomberg BMatch real-time prices, and that IMTOs pay customers only in naira. Rates offered to you will still differ between providers on the same day.

Why calling the market rarely works

The naira's rate responds to oil prices, CBN policy, dollar supply and sentiment, any of which can change in a day. Professional traders with live data still get direction wrong. For a household, the larger risk is not missing the best rate; it is being forced to convert at a bad moment because a bill is due tomorrow.

A calmer approach

  1. Separate needs from savings. Money for rent, school fees or a mortgage due soon should be converted on a schedule. Dollars you are saving can wait.
  2. Convert in stages. Split a large conversion into two or three parts over a few weeks, so one bad day does not set the whole rate.
  3. Set a reference, not a target. Note the rate on your last conversion. If today's offer is clearly better, convert a tranche; if worse, and the money is not needed, wait.
  4. Hold a naira buffer. One to three months of known naira costs means no forced conversion.
  5. Check the full quote. Rate and fee, then the naira you actually receive.

Rate locks

Some providers fix the rate on a quote for a short period. Remitly's glossary explains that a rate lock fixes the rate for a defined period, that the length varies by provider, and that some locks expire and require accepting a new rate if the transfer is not completed in time.

A worked example

Example only, with illustrative rates that are not current. You need ₦4,500,000 for school fees in eight weeks and hold USD 3,000. You convert USD 1,000 in week 1 at ₦1,480 (₦1,480,000), USD 1,000 in week 4 at ₦1,520 (₦1,520,000) and USD 1,000 in week 7 at ₦1,500 (₦1,500,000). Total: ₦4,500,000, an average of ₦1,500 per dollar. Converting all USD 3,000 in week 1 would have given ₦4,440,000; all in week 4, ₦4,560,000. Staging did not win the best week, but it avoided the worst one and met the fees in full.

Week (example)USDIllustrative rateNaira
11,000₦1,480₦1,480,000
41,000₦1,520₦1,520,000
71,000₦1,500₦1,500,000
Total3,000Average ₦1,500₦4,500,000

Where to keep the dollars while you wait

Timing only works if the dollars sit somewhere you can convert from without first moving them. Dollars in a US checking account have to be sent through a provider at that day's rate, so each conversion is also a transfer. Dollars held in an account that also holds naira can be converted in place when you decide, and the naira is then ready to send or spend. Whichever you use, keep the money you are timing separate from money you need this month, so a deadline never forces the decision.

What to check first

  • Where your dollars are held, and whether you can convert from there without first sending them.
  • How the rate is shown, and whether the fee is separate.
  • Whether naira you hold in Nigeria pushes your foreign accounts over USD 10,000 for FBAR.
  • That the naira lands where you need it: your own balance, family or a school.

Related: reading today's naira rate and what affects the rate when converting.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from the US keeps USD and NGN side by side, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose. Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, and nothing converts until you approve. The Personal Assistant can remind you of planned conversion dates.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to change dollars to naira?

Nobody can reliably predict it. Convert money you need soon on a schedule, stage larger amounts, and compare each quote against the mid-market rate.

Why do naira rates differ between apps on the same day?

Each provider sets its own margin over its reference price and may charge a separate fee. Compare the naira you receive for the same dollars.

What is the mid-market rate?

The midpoint between buying and selling prices in the wholesale market. The gap between it and your offered rate is the provider's margin.

Can I lock a USD to naira rate?

Some providers fix a quoted rate for a short period. Remitly's glossary says the length varies by provider and some locks expire.
