Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Can you sue a friend who owes you money in Nigeria?

A loan to a friend is still a debt the law recognises. How to gather proof, write a demand letter and use a small claims court in Nigeria.

The short answer

Yes. A loan between friends is a contract even without a signed agreement, so you can sue to recover it, usually after sending a written demand. Your bank transfer records, chats and voice notes are the evidence; in states that run small claims courts, such as Lagos, a modest debt can be pursued without a long trial, but check the current claim ceiling with the court registry first.

Nigerian law does not need a stamped document for a loan to exist. If you gave someone money on the understanding that they would pay it back, and they accepted it on that basis, there is an agreement a court can enforce. What the law cannot do is guess. The question a judge will ask is simple: can you show that money left you, reached your friend, and was a loan rather than a gift or a contribution to something you both did?

That last point is where most friendly loans fall apart. People who are close rarely write "loan" on anything. The person who owes you may later say it was help, a refund of something you owed, or your share of a joint business. Your task before going near a court is to build a record that answers that defence before it is raised.

The evidence that wins these cases

Start collecting now, while the relationship is still civil enough for your friend to reply to messages. Useful items include:

  • Bank transfer receipts and statements showing the date, amount and the receiving account name. A transfer narration such as "loan" or "borrowed money" helps.
  • WhatsApp, SMS or email messages where your friend asks for the money, promises to repay, names a date, or apologises for being late. An admission after the fact is often stronger than anything written at the start.
  • Voice notes and call recordings, kept in their original form on the device that received them.
  • Part payments. A repayment of even a small amount, especially with a message like "here is part of what I owe", shows both of you treated it as a debt.
  • Witnesses who were present when the money was requested or handed over in cash.

Electronic records are admissible in Nigerian courts under the Evidence Act, 2011, but the party relying on them is expected to show where they came from. Keep the phone or laptop, do not edit screenshots, and export full chat threads rather than cropped images. A lawyer can prepare the certificate the court may ask for when computer-generated evidence is tendered.

Send a letter of demand before you file

A demand letter is the formal step that turns a quarrel into a claim. It shows the court that you gave your friend a fair chance, and it often produces payment on its own because it signals you are serious. It should state the amount, when and how it was given, any repayments, the balance, a clear deadline (14 days is common practice), how to pay, and that you will go to court if the deadline passes. Keep it factual and free of insults.

You can write it yourself or have a lawyer send it on headed paper; the second tends to get a faster response. Deliver it in a way you can prove: by courier with a delivery record, by email, and by WhatsApp so you have a read receipt. Our guide to what a letter of demand must contain sets out the full checklist.

Which court, and what it involves

Small claims courts

Several states, Lagos among them, run small claims courts or small claims tracks within their Magistrates' Courts for simple debts. They use short forms, aim to finish matters quickly, and allow people to appear without a lawyer. Each state sets its own maximum claim amount by practice direction, and the figure has changed over time. We could not confirm the current Lagos ceiling from the Lagos State Judiciary site when we checked in October 2026, so ask the registry of the court nearest to you before filing. See using the Lagos small claims court for loan disputes for the process.

Magistrates' Courts and High Courts

Larger debts go to a Magistrates' Court within its monetary limit, or to the High Court above it. High Courts in many states offer an "undefended list" procedure for liquidated money demands: if the debtor cannot show a real defence, judgment can be given without a full trial. This route usually needs a lawyer.

Time limits

Claims on simple contracts are subject to limitation laws set by each state. Do not let a debt sit for years while hoping for payment; ask a lawyer how long you have in your state, because a claim filed too late can be thrown out however good the evidence.

Winning is not the same as being paid

A judgment says your friend owes you; it does not move money into your account. If they still refuse, the court's enforcement tools include attaching their movable property for sale, garnishee proceedings that direct their bank or employer to pay you from funds held for them, and, in some cases, a judgment summons. Each step has its own filing and costs. Before you sue, ask yourself whether your friend has a salary, a bank account or assets the court can reach. If they have nothing, a judgment may sit unpaid.

A worked example (illustrative only)

ItemAmount
Lent by transfer in January₦400,000
Part payment received in March₦100,000
Part payment received in May₦50,000
Balance to claim₦250,000
Court filing and service (example only; ask the registry)₦15,000
Lawyer for demand letter (example only)₦30,000

In this example you would claim ₦250,000 (₦400,000 less ₦150,000 repaid) and ask the court to award costs. Whether you recover the ₦45,000 you spent depends on the court. The figures for fees are placeholders; the real amounts vary by state and lawyer.

Steps

  1. Write down the history: dates, amounts, repayments and promises.
  2. Export full chat threads and download bank statements covering each transfer.
  3. Send a calm written demand with a deadline, and keep proof of delivery.
  4. Offer a payment plan in writing if your friend says they cannot pay in one go. A signed plan becomes fresh evidence.
  5. If the deadline passes, ask the court registry which court fits your amount and what forms to use.
  6. After judgment, ask about enforcement options against the debtor's bank account or property.

Where Pryme fits

If you lend to friends or family, keep the paper trail clean from the start. Sending from a Pryme account lets you add a clear narration, and with our VerifyDoc.ai partnership you can generate a verifiable receipt or statement that anyone, including a court, can check is genuine and unaltered. It does not replace legal advice, but it makes your evidence harder to dispute.

Questions people ask

Can I sue my friend for owing me money without a written agreement?

Yes. A loan can be proved by transfer records, messages and witnesses. The difficulty is showing it was a loan and not a gift, so messages where your friend promises to repay matter most.

Are WhatsApp chats accepted as evidence in Nigerian courts?

Electronic records can be admitted under the Evidence Act, 2011, but the court may ask for proof of where they came from. Keep the original device and full exported chats, not edited screenshots.

How much can I claim at the small claims court in Lagos?

Each state sets its own ceiling and it has been revised over time. We could not confirm the current Lagos figure in October 2026, so ask the registry before you file.

Can police help me recover money a friend owes?

A failure to repay a loan is usually a civil matter for the courts, not a crime. Police involvement in purely civil debts is often resisted by courts; fraud or a dud cheque is different.
