Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How subsidy removal changed transport fares: the NBS data

NBS fare data from May 2023 to May 2026: city bus fares nearly doubled in the first month after subsidy removal and kept rising after.

The short answer

According to the NBS Transport Fare Watch, the average city bus fare rose from ₦649.59 in May 2023 to ₦1,285.41 in June 2023, a 97.88% jump in the month petrol subsidy was removed. Intercity bus fares rose 42.09% and okada fares 33.14% in the same month, and by May 2026 the city bus average had reached ₦1,431.25.

What happened in 2023

President Tinubu announced the end of the petrol subsidy in his inauguration speech on 29 May 2023. Pump prices rose at once, and NNPC raised its price again on 18 July 2023, according to Al Jazeera's report from that day. Al Jazeera also cited regulator data showing daily petrol consumption fell to 48.43 million litres in June 2023, from an average of 66.9 million litres in January to May.

Transport is where most households felt this first. Buses, okada and keke run on petrol, and operators pass fuel costs to passengers quickly. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Transport Fare Watch, published monthly, shows how fast.

The month subsidy went: May to June 2023

ModeMay 2023June 2023Change in the month
Bus within city (per drop)₦649.59₦1,285.41+97.88%
Intercity bus (per person)₦4,002.16₦5,686.49+42.09%
Okada (per drop)₦464.55₦618.52+33.14%
Air (specified routes)₦74,948.78₦78,640.54+4.93%

NBS national averages, as reported by Nairametrics on 14 August 2023. Year-on-year, the June 2023 city bus fare was 120.63% higher than June 2022's ₦582.61. The pattern is what you would expect: modes where fuel is a large share of the operator's cost (short city trips, okada) jumped most, while air fares, priced on aviation fuel rather than petrol, barely moved.

State figures for June 2023 ranged from ₦1,700 in Bauchi to ₦710 in Imo for a city bus drop, and from ₦8,500 in Abuja to ₦3,400 in Kwara for intercity trips.

Three years on: May 2023 to May 2026

ModeMay 2023May 2026Change
Bus within city₦649.59₦1,431.25about +120%
Intercity bus₦4,002.16₦9,699.55about +142%
Okada₦464.55₦1,072.51about +131%
Air₦74,948.78₦157,552.19about +110%

May 2026 averages as reported by Nairametrics on 30 June 2026; percentages are our arithmetic. Over three years the picture changes: the city bus rise happened mostly in one month, while intercity and air fares kept climbing after 2023 as the naira, vehicle prices, spare parts and wages also rose.

Petrol and fares since then

Petrol itself kept rising after 2023. The NBS PMS Price Watch put the national average petrol price at ₦1,596.25 a litre in May 2026, up 55.31% on May 2025, as reported by Legit.ng. Fares do not follow petrol one-for-one: operators also price in vehicle costs, union levies and demand. City bus fares rose from ₦1,195.75 in February 2026 to ₦1,431.25 in May 2026, according to the reports above.

Worked example

Example: a commuter making two city bus drops a day, 22 working days a month, at the national average. In May 2023 that is 2 × 22 × ₦649.59 = ₦28,581.96. In June 2023 it is 2 × 22 × ₦1,285.41 = ₦56,558.04, an extra ₦27,976.08 a month from one month to the next. At the May 2026 average it is ₦62,975.00.

How to use this data

Where Pryme fits

In Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, transport is a Spaces sector. Loans on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze MFB, may be offered based on how your account is run and can only be spent with Spaces merchants; you see the amount, cost and repayment date and accept before anything is drawn.
