Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Starting a taxi or transport business in Abuja

DRTS registration, e-hailing rules, where tricycles can operate, and the numbers behind running cars, buses or staff shuttles in the FCT.

The short answer

In Abuja, commercial vehicles must be registered with the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS); the FCTA has said private cars can work as taxis without being painted if they go through its e-hailing registration, including NIMC and DRTS records, a unique identification number and plates. Commercial tricycles and motorcycles are barred from the city centre and limited to estates and satellite towns.

Pick the model first

"Transport business" covers very different operations in the FCT. The rules, capital and risk change with each one:

ModelWhere it works in AbujaMain local rule to check
Ride-hailing cars driven by hired driversCity-wide, strongest in the central districts and airport runsDRTS e-hailing registration for each car and driver
Painted cabs on fixed routesCorridors such as Kubwa, Nyanya, Lugbe and Airport RoadCommercial registration with DRTS
Tricycles (keke)Estates and satellite towns onlyKept out of the city centre by DRTS
Staff and school shuttlesContracts with offices, schools and estatesCommercial registration, insured vehicle, licensed driver
Intercity busesFrom Abuja parks to other statesPark access and federal road traffic rules

The national picture, including business structure and insurance, is in how to start a transport business in Nigeria.

What DRTS expects

In May 2024 the FCTA explained that private, unpainted cars can provide taxi services if the owner follows the e-hailing route: registering the vehicle and driver, with data captured by NIMC and DRTS, and obtaining a unique identification number and plate. Its scheme covers drivers on platforms such as Uber and Bolt. During the same period DRTS impounded unregistered taxis at Area 3, Apo Interchange and the Three Arms Zone, and defaulting drivers faced prosecution at mobile courts.

For tricycles and motorcycles, DRTS has said commercial operators must stay out of the Abuja city centre and work only in designated areas such as estates and satellite towns. A keke fleet therefore belongs in places like Kubwa, Dutse, Lugbe or Gwagwalada, not Wuse or Garki.

Drivers: the biggest risk and the biggest cost

  • Every driver needs the correct class of licence; see commercial driver's licence rules.
  • Take a copy of each driver's NIN, guarantor details and home address before handing over keys.
  • Agree in writing whether the driver is an employee on salary or works on a weekly remittance or hire-purchase plan. The rules on pay and tax differ.
  • Fit a tracker. Abuja's wide roads and long satellite-town routes make it hard to know where a car has been without one.

A worked example: three ride-hailing cars

Illustrative numbers only, for an owner putting three used saloon cars on ride-hailing with hired drivers on weekly remittance.

LineWeekly per car (example)Three cars
Agreed remittance from driver₦70,000₦210,000
Servicing and tyres reserve−₦12,000−₦36,000
Insurance and registration renewals, spread weekly−₦5,000−₦15,000
Tracker and phone line−₦2,000−₦6,000
Repairs and downtime reserve−₦10,000−₦30,000
Owner's weekly margin before tax₦41,000₦123,000

The model only works if remittances arrive every week and the reserves are actually set aside. Missing one week's remittance from one car removes more than half of that car's monthly margin. See tracking weekly driver pay-ins.

Contracts: staff buses and school runs

Abuja has an unusually large salaried workforce in ministries, agencies, embassies and companies, much of it living in satellite towns such as Kubwa, Bwari, Lugbe, Kuje and the Nasarawa side of the city at Mararaba and Karu. That creates demand for staff shuttles and school runs on fixed morning and evening timetables. Contract work pays less per kilometre than ride-hailing at peak, but it is predictable and is usually paid by transfer against an invoice.

Before you bid, confirm who pays for fuel, waiting time and replacement vehicles on breakdown days, how many days' notice either side must give, and when invoices are due. Put it in a signed agreement, and price in the empty return leg: a shuttle that drops staff in the Central Business District at 7.30am often drives back to Kubwa empty, and that fuel is yours unless the contract says otherwise. Schools in particular will ask for the driver's details, a clean vehicle record and evidence of insurance.

Records you will need

  • A file per vehicle: papers, registration, insurance, servicing and repairs.
  • A file per driver: licence, NIN, guarantor, signed agreement and remittance history.
  • A weekly sheet of remittances received, missed and recovered.
  • Receipts for parking and levies paid to FCT-IRS.

Parking, levies and the light rail

Park-and-pay, street parking and wrong-parking charges are among the revenues the FCTA and Area Councils have assigned to FCT-IRS. Budget for them if your cars wait at offices or the airport. The Abuja light rail and the city's bus services change demand on some corridors, so watch how commuters on your routes respond before adding vehicles.

Where Pryme fits

Transport is a Spaces sector, and Spaces operates in Abuja. A transport operator with a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and accept riders and passengers who pay with Loans on Spaces, credit that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. Separate virtual account numbers for each driver make weekly remittances easier to match. Ask Pryme about merchant terms through contact.

Questions people ask

Can I use my private car for taxi in Abuja without painting it?

The FCTA said in 2024 that unpainted private cars can be used if the owner completes the e-hailing registration with NIMC and DRTS and gets a unique identification number and plate.

Are keke and okada allowed in Abuja city centre?

No. DRTS has told commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators to leave the city centre and work only in designated areas such as estates and satellite towns.

Who registers commercial vehicles in Abuja?

The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), which works with other agencies on enforcement, including impounding unregistered taxis.

How much can I make from a ride-hailing car in Abuja?

It depends on the remittance you agree and your costs. In our illustrative example, a car remitting ₦70,000 a week leaves about ₦41,000 after reserves, before tax.
