Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Finding business premises in Abuja without land-use trouble

How the Abuja master plan affects where you can trade, the questions to ask a landlord, and how to compare districts, rent terms and running costs.

The short answer

In Abuja, the most important question about any shop or office is whether the building's approved land use allows your business, because the FCTA's Department of Development Control orders unapproved conversions back to their original use and seals businesses that ignore notices. Choose purpose-built commercial premises, ask the landlord for the land-use approval in writing, and only then compare rent, power and footfall.

The master plan comes first

Abuja was planned, and the FCTA enforces the plan. Each plot has an approved land use, such as residential, commercial or mixed, and changing it needs approval. The Department of Development Control has acted repeatedly against unapproved conversions:

  • In March 2021 it gave businesses in converted houses on Gana Street, Maitama, seven days to return them to residential use or be sealed, and directed them to the Central Business District or Idu Industrial Estate.
  • In October 2023 it said more than 111 cases of land-use conversion had been recorded across the capital's districts, ordered monetised government houses back to residential use, and said properties on major streets converted without approval must revert or pay contravention charges.

A landlord who rents you a converted bungalow takes your rent; you take the risk. If the building is sealed, your fit-out, stock and customers are stuck behind the door.

Questions to ask before you pay anything

  1. What is the approved land use of this plot? Ask to see the title document and the approved building plan, or a letter showing approval for commercial or mixed use.
  2. Has the building received any notice from Development Control or any other FCTA department? Ask neighbouring tenants too.
  3. Who owns it, and is the person renting to you authorised? Ask for the owner's details and, if an agent is involved, the agent's authority in writing.
  4. What exactly is included? Service charge, security, waste collection, water, generator or solar, parking and cleaning of common areas.
  5. How is electricity metered? A separate AEDC prepaid meter in your space is better than a shared meter split by the landlord.
  6. Can you put up a sign, and where? See shop signage permits in Abuja.
  7. What happens at renewal? Agree in the lease how much notice you get and how a rent increase is decided.

Check the practical things on site

Visit at least twice, once on a weekday morning and once in the evening, and if you can, once after heavy rain. Look at how customers would reach you: is there a bus stop or taxi point nearby, is there parking, and can a delivery van get to your door? Ask neighbouring tenants how many hours of AEDC supply they get, whether water comes from a borehole, and how often the street floods. Check the toilet, the roof and the fuse box yourself. In estates, ask the residents' association about trading hours, gate rules for customers and any levy it charges shops, because these sit outside the lease but affect your trade.

Comparing districts

AreaTypical premisesSuitsWatch for
Central Business DistrictOffice towers, purpose-built commercialProfessional services, serviced officesHigh rent, parking
Wuse, Wuse 2, GarkiPlazas, market-adjacent shops, officesRetail, eateries, salons, clinicsConverted houses on side streets
Utako, JabiPlazas, malls, mixed developmentsRetail, restaurants, officesRent and service charges
Gwarinpa, Kubwa, LugbeEstate shopping strips, neighbourhood plazasMini-marts, pharmacies, salons, schoolsEstate rules and access
Idu Industrial EstateIndustrial and warehouse plotsProduction, storage, logisticsDistance from customers
Satellite townsRoadside shops, small plazasEveryday servicesRoad access in the rainy season

The FCTA's own enforcement points businesses towards the Central Business District, district centres and industrial estates. Neighbourhood centres planned into estates are usually the safest option for local shops.

Rent terms in practice

Many Abuja landlords ask for one or two years' rent upfront, plus agency and legal fees, a caution deposit and a service charge. That ties up a large share of a new business's capital before it sells anything. Some ways to manage it:

  • Negotiate a rent-free fit-out period of one to two months.
  • Ask for payment in two instalments, with the second due after six months.
  • Agree in writing which repairs the landlord makes and which you make.
  • Pay by transfer and get a receipt for each payment. Never pay cash to an agent without a receipt that names the property.

Our guide to saving startup capital covers building the deposit.

A worked comparison

Two options for a small pharmacy, using example figures:

Converted bungalow, side streetUnit in estate shopping strip
Annual rent (example)₦1,800,000₦2,800,000
Service charge (example)None₦300,000
Land use for commercialNot approvedApproved
Sign allowedUnclearYes, plaza standard
Risk of a sealing noticeRealLow

The bungalow saves ₦1,300,000 a year on paper. Against a ₦2,000,000 fit-out and ₦6,000,000 of stock in the example, one sealing order would wipe out years of savings.

Where Pryme fits

Paying rent and service charges by transfer from a Pryme Business Account gives you a dated record, and Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai lets you generate a verifiable statement if you need to prove payment to a landlord or a court. Spaces operates in Abuja; businesses in supported sectors can ask about joining through contact.

Questions people ask

Can I use a residential house for business in Abuja?

Only with approval for that use. The FCTA's Department of Development Control has ordered converted houses back to residential use and sealed businesses that ignored notices.

Where should businesses in Abuja locate according to the FCTA?

In 2021 the FCTA directed businesses removed from converted houses in Maitama to the Central Business District or Idu Industrial Estate, as provided in the master plan.

What documents should I ask a landlord for in Abuja?

Evidence of the plot's approved land use, the owner's identity and the agent's authority, plus a written lease setting out rent, service charges, repairs and renewal terms.

How many years' rent do landlords ask for in Abuja?

Many ask for one or two years upfront plus fees. Try to negotiate instalments or a rent-free fit-out period.
