Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Multiple taxation in Abuja: how to check and complain

Why Abuja businesses got overlapping demands, what the single-collector arrangement with FCT-IRS changed, and how to challenge a duplicate charge.

The short answer

Multiple taxation in Abuja usually means paying the same levy twice to different bodies, typically the FCTA and an Area Council, or paying unofficial collectors. The FCTA and the six Area Councils have named FCT-IRS as the single collector of most local revenues, so if you receive two demands for the same item, write to FCT-IRS with both notices before paying, and escalate in writing if it is not resolved.

Where the overlap came from

The FCT has two layers of local authority: the FCT Administration and six Area Councils. Both have legal powers to raise some revenues, and for years their claims overlapped. Three examples show the pattern:

  • Signage. The FCTA and AMAC disputed who could charge for outdoor signs in AMAC's area until a January 2021 agreement directed all collections to the FCTA's signage department, explicitly to avoid double taxation.
  • Food handlers. A hospitality company went to the Federal High Court over whether the FCTA or AMAC should certify food handlers. In 2023 the court named the FCTA.
  • Hotels. When the FCTA's Social Development Secretariat began registering hospitality businesses in 2023, it cited multiple taxation among the problems it wanted to address.

Add consultants collecting on commission and people posing as officials, and a small shop in Wuse or Kubwa could face several demands in one month.

What has changed

The FCTA and the six Area Councils designated FCT-IRS as the single entity to collect and report taxes and many non-tax revenues, including business premises and shop levies, food handling permits, market levies, parking charges, consumption tax, environment and waste charges and signage. Informal or third-party collection by Area Councils is being phased out, and officials described the aim as a more business-friendly environment.

Two limits remain. Area Councils that have sole statutory responsibility for a revenue head can decide how far FCT-IRS is involved, and land charges are being folded into a property tax. So some council demands may still be lawful, but they should not duplicate something FCT-IRS has already collected.

How to tell if you are being charged twice

CheckWhat to look for
Revenue headDoes each notice name a specific levy? Do two notices name the same one?
PeriodDo they cover the same year or month?
IssuerFCT-IRS, the FCTA department or an Area Council, and on what legal basis?
Payment channelAn official channel, or an individual's account or cash?
Your recordsHave you already paid this item and kept the receipt?

A full list of what FCT-IRS collects is in our guide to business levies and permits in Abuja.

Steps to challenge a duplicate charge

  1. Do not ignore either notice. FCT-IRS has sealed businesses with court orders after demand notices went unanswered.
  2. Write to the issuer of the later notice and to FCT-IRS, attaching both notices and any receipt, and ask which is valid.
  3. Ask for the legal basis of any charge you believe is not lawful: the law or bye-law and the rate.
  4. Pay the undisputed part and state in writing what you dispute and why.
  5. Keep proof of delivery of every letter and note names, dates and offices visited.
  6. Act together. Market and trade associations, plaza tenant groups and chambers of commerce in Abuja often raise duplicate charges collectively, which is faster than one shop alone.
  7. Escalate. The 2025 tax reform Acts introduced an Office of the Tax Ombud to liaise with tax authorities on behalf of taxpayers. For disputed assessments, formal objection and appeal routes apply; take advice before deadlines run.

Prevention: make duplicates easier to spot

Register with FCT-IRS early, so your business has a record there before anyone else turns up with a notice, and keep your federal and FCT obligations separate in your books. If you trade as a sole proprietor, your personal income tax on business profit also goes to FCT-IRS if you live in the FCT, which is covered in how sole traders pay tax.

A worked example

Musa runs a barbershop in Nyanya. In February he receives a premises levy notice from FCT-IRS for an example ₦40,000 and pays it through the official channel. In March a man presents a second notice for "shop levy" for the same year, payable in cash, at an example ₦25,000.

  • Musa shows his FCT-IRS receipt and asks for the second notice's legal basis and official payment channel.
  • He does not pay cash and takes a photo of the notice.
  • He writes to FCT-IRS with both documents and asks it to confirm the second demand is not valid.
  • He tells his plaza's tenant group, who find three other shops received the same notice.

If the second notice turns out to be valid and different, he pays it through the official channel. If not, he has saved ₦25,000 and helped his neighbours.

Where Pryme fits

Paying every levy by transfer from a Pryme Business Account gives you a dated record, and a verifiable statement generated through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai can help prove a payment was made. The Compliance agent can prepare a record of notices and payments for you to review. Spaces operates in Abuja; supported businesses can ask about joining through contact.

Questions people ask

What is multiple taxation in Abuja?

Paying the same tax or levy more than once to different authorities, usually the FCTA and an Area Council, or to unofficial collectors, for the same item and period.

Who collects business levies in Abuja now?

The FCTA and the six Area Councils designated FCT-IRS as the single collector for most local revenues, including premises levies, consumption tax and signage charges.

How do I complain about double taxation in Abuja?

Write to FCT-IRS and the issuer with both notices and your receipts, ask for the legal basis, pay only undisputed amounts through official channels, and escalate through your association or the Tax Ombud if it is not resolved.

Should I pay a levy officer in cash in Abuja?

No. Pay only through the official channel shown on a proper demand notice and keep the receipt.
