Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Starting a hotel or shortlet in Abuja: FCT rules

FCT hospitality registration and licensing, consumption tax, food handler certificates and land-use risks for guest houses, hotels and shortlets in Abuja.

The short answer

Hotels and other hospitality establishments in Abuja must be registered and licensed, for a fee, by the FCTA's Social Development Secretariat, which received ministerial approval in 2023 to license all tourism and hospitality establishments under the Tourism Act. They also pay consumption tax on hotels, collected by FCT-IRS, and staff who handle food need FCTA health certification.

Why Abuja is a hospitality city

Abuja's room demand comes from the business of government: ministries, agencies, the National Assembly, embassies and the companies and NGOs that deal with them. Visitors arrive for meetings, conferences, visa appointments and weddings, and many stay two to four nights. When the FCTA's Social Development Secretariat sought approval to register hotels in 2023, it put the number operating in the territory at roughly 3,000 to 3,500. Competition is real, but so is steady weekday demand.

That demand is concentrated. Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse 2, the Central Business District and Garki serve official visitors. Jabi, Utako and Gwarinpa attract business and family stays. Lugbe and the airport road serve early flights from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Licensing and registration

In April 2023, the FCT Minister approved the Social Development Secretariat's plan to register and license all tourism and hospitality establishments in the FCT under the Tourism Act. Establishments must meet set requirements, be licensed at a fee, and those that do not comply cannot operate. Licensed establishments are to be listed in a tourism compendium for visitors.

  • CAC registration and a Tax ID for the operating business.
  • FCT hospitality registration and licence from the Social Development Secretariat. Ask for its current requirements and fee in writing.
  • Food handler certificates from the FCTA's Health and Human Services Secretariat for kitchen and service staff, with screening every six months.
  • FCT-IRS registration for consumption tax and premises levies.
  • Sign approval before installing an outdoor sign.

For the national framework, including fire safety and liquor, see how to start a guest house or small hotel.

Shortlets: the grey area

Shortlet apartments are common in Abuja's estates in Gwarinpa, Jabi, Katampe, Wuye and Life Camp. The FCT's 2023 licensing approval covers all tourism and hospitality establishments, and whether a single flat let by the night falls within that should be checked with the Social Development Secretariat. Land use is the other risk: the FCTA has ordered properties converted from residential use without approval back to their original use. A building run entirely as a guest house, with reception and signage, looks very different to a regulator from one flat let occasionally.

Check your lease or estate rules too. Many estates and landlords forbid short letting, and estate associations in Abuja often control gate access. Our national guide, starting a shortlet apartment business, covers furnishing and pricing.

Running it: power, security and staff

Guests judge an Abuja hotel on three things before the room itself: whether the power stays on, whether the gate feels safe, and whether reception answers at midnight. AEDC supply varies by feeder and district, and many operators run a hybrid of grid, solar and generator to keep air conditioning and water pumps working overnight. Put the diesel and maintenance cost into your room rate from the start rather than adding surcharges later.

Hire housekeeping and security staff with references, record their details, and train reception on how to verify a transfer before handing over keys. Fake payment alerts are a common loss at check-in, especially late at night. Keep a written guest register, a caution-deposit policy for shortlets and a clear check-out time, and read new reviews weekly: Abuja's business visitors book heavily on ratings, and one complaint about a dark corridor or a cold shower can cost several corporate bookings. Reply to each review politely and fix what it names.

Tax: consumption tax and enforcement

Consumption tax on hotels, restaurants and event centres is one of the revenues the FCTA and the six Area Councils assigned to FCT-IRS. Charge it correctly, show it on the bill and remit it. Enforcement is visible: in May 2024 FCT-IRS sealed a hotel in Area II, Garki, under a court order for failing to file returns, and said unsealing without a court order is an offence.

A worked example: a 10-room guest house

Illustrative only. Suppose a 10-room guest house in Utako charges an example ₦45,000 a night and averages 55% occupancy.

LineMonthly (example)
Room revenue: 10 × 30 nights × 55% × ₦45,000₦7,425,000
Staff (reception, housekeeping, security, cook)−₦1,800,000
Diesel, solar maintenance and AEDC bills−₦1,300,000
Laundry, toiletries, breakfast−₦750,000
Lease, spread monthly−₦1,500,000
Booking commissions and marketing−₦600,000
Repairs reserve−₦300,000
Before licence fees, levies and taxes₦1,175,000

Raising occupancy from 55% to 65% adds about ₦1.35 million a month in this example, which is why weekday corporate deals and direct bookings matter. See direct bookings vs booking sites.

Where Pryme fits

Hotels and shortlets are a Spaces sector, and Spaces operates in Abuja. A hotel or shortlet operator with a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and take bookings from guests who hold Loans on Spaces, credit that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. Guests can be sent bank-transfer checkout links for deposits. Ask Pryme about merchant terms through contact.

Questions people ask

Do hotels in Abuja need a licence?

Yes. In 2023 the FCT Minister approved the Social Development Secretariat's registration and licensing of all tourism and hospitality establishments in the FCT, at a fee, under the Tourism Act.

Do I need a licence for a shortlet apartment in Abuja?

The FCT licensing approval covers tourism and hospitality establishments. Ask the Social Development Secretariat whether your shortlet falls within it, and check your lease and estate rules.

Who collects hotel consumption tax in Abuja?

FCT-IRS. Consumption tax on hotels, restaurants and event centres is among the revenues the FCTA and Area Councils designated it to collect.

Is a guest house business profitable in Abuja?

It can be, but it depends on occupancy and power costs. In our illustrative 10-room example at 55% occupancy, the operator keeps about ₦1.2 million a month before licence fees, levies and taxes.
