Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to start a guest house or small hotel in Nigeria

Hotel licensing, state tourism registration, fire and food safety, staffing, room pricing and occupancy for a new guest house or small hotel in Nigeria.

The short answer

To start a guest house or small hotel in Nigeria, register the business with the CAC, obtain a hotel licence from your state's tourism authority before opening, and meet fire and food safety rules. In Lagos, hotels register online with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, receiving a 30-day provisional certificate and then a one-year certificate after verification.

Licensing comes first

Unlike many small businesses, a hotel cannot simply open its doors. States license hotels and tourism businesses. In Lagos, the hotel licensing law of 2003 was later amended to require hotel establishments and tourism operators to hold a licence before they operate, overseen by a Hotel and Tourism Licensing Authority that can standardise, regulate and grade establishments. Lagos has enforced this before: in 2014 it threatened to close more than 2,500 unregistered hotels and restaurants.

In June 2025 Lagos launched an online licensing scheme for hotels, bars, lounges, clubs and beach operators through lasgtourism.com. Operators receive a 30-day provisional certificate when they register and a one-year certificate after verification, and must display their licences at the premises. Other states have their own tourism boards or ministries; contact yours before you buy or lease a building.

The full checklist

Fire safetyState fire serviceExtinguishers, smoke detectors, emergency exits, trained staff

Foreign investors should note that, according to a published legal review, a foreigner can only register a company with a minimum authorised share capital of ₦100 million. Confirm the current rule with the CAC and an adviser.

The building and rooms

A guest house can work in a converted residential building; a hotel usually needs purpose-built or heavily adapted space. Either way, inspect the structure, wiring, plumbing and drainage, and check that the building's approved use allows a hotel.

  • En-suite bathrooms with steady water and hot water in every room.
  • Air conditioning and power backup sized for every room running at night.
  • Good locks, a safe or secure storage and controlled access to guest corridors.
  • A reception that can see the entrance, with a guest register.
  • Fire extinguishers on every floor, marked exits and smoke detectors.
  • Laundry capacity for sheets and towels on a full night.

Staff and daily operations

Even a ten-room guest house runs around the clock. Plan shifts for reception, housekeeping, maintenance and security, and, if you serve food, kitchen staff who meet food safety standards. Write simple procedures for check-in (including verifying ID), room cleaning, lost property, complaints and emergencies, and train everyone on them.

  1. Verify ID and record every guest at check-in.
  2. Take payment or a deposit before handing over keys.
  3. Inspect each room after check-out and before the next guest.
  4. Log maintenance requests and close each one.
  5. Reconcile the day's payments against the room register every night.

Room rates and occupancy

Hotels live on occupancy: the share of rooms sold each night. Work from your monthly costs to a break-even occupancy, then set rates for weekdays, weekends and long stays.

Worked example (illustrative): a 12-room guest house has monthly costs of ₦9 million for rent, power, staff, laundry and supplies. Over 30 nights it has 360 room-nights to sell. At ₦45,000 a night, it needs 200 room-nights, or 56% occupancy, to break even. At 70% occupancy (252 room-nights) income is ₦11.34 million, leaving ₦2.34 million before tax and occupancy levies. A corporate deal that books three rooms every weeknight adds about 65 room-nights a month on its own.

Where weekday guests come from

Weekends often fill from leisure guests, weddings and events. Weekdays decide whether a small hotel makes money. The steadiest sources are usually local:

  • Companies near you that host visiting staff, auditors or contractors.
  • Hospitals, universities and government offices whose visitors need somewhere to stay.
  • Event centres and churches that need rooms for guests and speakers.
  • Long-stay contractors working on construction or projects in the area.
  • Travel agents and tour operators who book groups.

Visit them in person with a simple rate sheet and an offer for regular bookings. Track which source each booking came from, and look after the ones that return. Guest reviews matter even for a small property, so respond to every review and fix what guests complain about.

Corporate accounts, event and wedding block bookings, and long-stay rates for contractors bring weekday business. Issue invoices to companies and receipts to every guest. For collecting payments, see bank transfer checkout, and if you want to start smaller, read how to start a shortlet business.

Where Pryme fits

Hotels and shortlets are a supported Spaces sector. A licensed hotel or guest house that opens a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and reach guests who hold Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent with Spaces merchants, which brings paying guests to your rooms. Our article on pay-later for hotels covers the operator view. The account's payroll pays shift staff, and the Customer Support agent can prepare replies to booking questions for a person to approve. For merchant terms, contact Pryme.

Questions people ask

Do I need a licence to open a hotel in Lagos?

Yes. Lagos requires hotels to be licensed before operating. Registration is online at lasgtourism.com, with a 30-day provisional certificate and a one-year certificate after verification.

Can I run a guest house from a residential building?

Possibly, but check the building's approved use with the state, confirm licensing with the tourism ministry, and meet fire safety rules before opening.

What occupancy does a small hotel need to break even?

Divide monthly costs by the nightly rate to get the room-nights you must sell, then divide by rooms times nights. In the example above, 12 rooms at ₦45,000 need about 56% occupancy.

What taxes do hotels pay in Lagos?

Lagos levies a hotel occupancy and restaurant consumption tax in addition to federal taxes. Ask the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service for the current rate.
