Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Stanbic IBTC naira card international spending limit

Stanbic IBTC caps its naira debit card at $100 a month abroad, shared across ATM, web and POS. What that means and the alternatives.

The short answer

Stanbic IBTC's cards FAQ sets the international spending limit on its naira debit card at $100 per month, shared across ATM, web and POS transactions, as at October 2026. Its naira credit card is not eligible for international transactions at all, so for larger foreign spending the bank points to its USD and GBP debit cards.

Nigerian banks cut back naira card spending abroad as foreign exchange became scarce, and the limits differ from bank to bank. For Stanbic IBTC, the figure in its own FAQ is small: enough for a subscription or two, not for a trip. This guide explains what the limit covers, why payments fail and what to use instead.

What the limit covers

CardInternational use (Stanbic IBTC FAQ, Oct 2026)
NGN debit card$100 per month, shared across POS, web and ATM
NGN credit cardNot eligible for international transactions
USD debit cardDaily: ATM $1,000, web $3,500, POS $6,500
GBP debit cardDaily: ATM £500, web £1,500, POS £3,000

"Shared" means one combined allowance. A $40 online subscription and a $70 ATM withdrawal in the same month add up to $110, so the second transaction would be declined in full, not partly paid.

What counts as international

Any payment processed outside Nigeria or in a foreign currency usually counts, even if you are sitting in Lagos. That includes:

  • Streaming, software and cloud subscriptions billed in dollars.
  • Online shops based abroad, and app store purchases billed in a foreign currency.
  • Hotel and flight bookings on foreign websites.
  • Cash withdrawals at ATMs outside Nigeria.

Some foreign services bill Nigerian cards in naira through a local partner; those may not count against the limit. The statement shows how each payment was processed.

Why payments fail even under $100

  • Exchange rate movements: a $95 charge plus conversion costs can tip over the remaining allowance.
  • Pre-authorisations: hotels and car hire firms place holds larger than the final bill; the hold counts until it drops off.
  • Card not enabled for web: ask the bank to confirm online payments are switched on.
  • Failed one-time password: see Stanbic IBTC OTP not received.
  • Merchant blocks: some foreign merchants decline Nigerian-issued cards regardless of the limit.

Before a trip: a checklist

  • Work out how much you expect to spend abroad by card and in cash. If it is more than $100 for the month, the naira card will not cover it.
  • If you need more, open a domiciliary account and request a USD or GBP debit card well before you travel; the card is collected and activated at a branch.
  • Tell the bank your travel dates if it asks, so foreign transactions are not flagged.
  • Carry a second way to pay, such as a dollar card or a small amount of cash, in case the first is declined.
  • Note the international number, +234 700 909 9099, and how to hotlist the card in the app (Profile, then Hotlist Card).

If you are charged wrongly abroad

Duplicate charges, charges for cancelled bookings and ATM withdrawals that did not pay out all need a dispute. Contact the merchant first if you can, then report the transaction to Stanbic IBTC with the date, amount, merchant name and any receipt. Exchange-rate differences between the time of purchase and the time of settlement are not usually treated as errors. Our guide to failed Stanbic IBTC transactions explains the dispute route and when to escalate to the CBN.

Worked example

Example only. Ngozi pays a $12 music subscription and a $25 cloud storage plan from her Stanbic IBTC naira card every month. That leaves $100 − $12 − $25 = $63. In the same month she tries to buy a $70 online course. The course is declined because $70 is more than the $63 left. She either waits for the next month's allowance or pays from a dollar card.

Pre-authorisations deserve a special mention. A hotel may hold $150 on check-in for a $90 room; that hold alone is more than the $100 monthly allowance, so the check-in is declined even though the final bill would fit.

Alternatives for larger spending

  1. Stanbic IBTC USD or GBP debit card: draws on a domiciliary account and has much higher daily limits. See Stanbic IBTC dollar card.
  2. Paying by bank transfer from a domiciliary account: for tuition or larger invoices, an international transfer with documents is often better than a card. See school fees through Form A.
  3. Paying in naira where offered: some services let Nigerians pay in naira through local channels.

Our guide to spending abroad as a Nigerian compares the options in more depth.

What to check first

  • Confirm the limit is still $100 by calling 0201 2709 676 or 0201 4222 222; banks change these figures.
  • Ask whether your card is enabled for international and online use.
  • Check how much of this month's allowance you have used.
  • Before travelling, save +234 700 909 9099, the bank's international number.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, so money received in dollars can stay in dollars. Swap converts only when you choose, with the rate shown first.

Questions people ask

What is the Stanbic IBTC naira card limit abroad?

$100 per month, shared across POS, web and ATM, according to the bank's cards FAQ as at October 2026.

Can I use Stanbic naira credit card abroad?

No. The cards FAQ says the naira credit card is not eligible for international transactions.

Why was my Stanbic card declined on a foreign website?

Common reasons are the $100 monthly limit already being used, online payments not enabled, a failed one-time password or the merchant declining Nigerian cards.

How can I spend more than $100 abroad with Stanbic IBTC?

Use a Stanbic IBTC USD or GBP debit card linked to a domiciliary account. The USD card allows up to $3,500 online and $6,500 at POS daily.
