Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Stanbic IBTC business account: documents required

What Stanbic IBTC asks for to open a sole trader or company account: CAC papers, TIN, BVN, two references, photo, and the ₦20,000 Blue Blossom rule.

The short answer

Stanbic IBTC's sole trader account form asks for a recent passport photograph, two independent and satisfactory references, a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and the BVN of each signatory, along with the supporting documents listed with the form. Limited companies should also expect to provide their CAC incorporation documents, board resolution and IDs for all signatories; Stanbic IBTC did not publish a full company checklist on the pages we read, so confirm the list with your branch before you go.

What Stanbic IBTC's own form says

The clearest published source is Stanbic IBTC's "Individual and Sole trader clients" account-opening form, dated 25 October 2022. It states that the bank "will not establish or operate the requested account(s) unless and until it has received the required supporting documents". The items it names are:

  • One recent passport photograph.
  • Two independent and satisfactory references.
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN), which the form says applies only to sole trader customers.
  • Bank Verification Number (BVN) of the signatory.
  • A bank reference section, where you give your account number, bank name and how long that bank has known you, and authorise Stanbic IBTC to request a reference.

The form also contains conditions for SME accounts, including one requiring "not less than 50% ownership / shareholding structure (for SME Businesses)". Read the conditions on the version your branch gives you, since forms are revised.

Sole trader (business name) versus limited company

The type of CAC registration decides most of the paperwork. A business name registered with CAC is a sole proprietorship or partnership; a limited company is a separate legal person with directors and shareholders.

ItemBusiness name (sole trader)Limited company
CAC registration evidenceBusiness name certificateCertificate of incorporation
Company recordsNot applicableMemorandum and articles, and the CAC status report or forms showing directors and shareholders
Authority to openOwner signsBoard resolution naming signatories
TINRequired on Stanbic IBTC's sole trader formCompany TIN, usually asked for
BVNOf the ownerOf every signatory
ID and photoOwner's ID and passport photographEach signatory's ID and photograph
ReferencesTwo independent referencesUsually two references
Proof of addressBusiness address evidenceRegistered and operating address evidence

The limited company column reflects what Nigerian banks typically publish. For example, Access Bank's corporate account page lists the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, CAC forms, a search report, board resolution, proof of address, two references, ID and BVN for each signatory, and TIN. Stanbic IBTC may ask for more or less; confirm with the branch or relationship team.

References: the item that slows most applications

Stanbic IBTC asks for two independent and satisfactory references. In Nigerian banking that usually means current account holders, often at any bank, who know you and sign a reference form, with their account details and signatures confirmed by their own bank. Practical points:

  • Ask early. Referees often need to visit or email their own bank to confirm their signature.
  • Use people who are not signatories on the account you are opening.
  • Check the referee's details match their bank record exactly, including name spelling.
  • Ask the branch whether it accepts emailed scanned references or needs originals.

Opening balance and the Blue Blossom account

The same 2022 form includes conditions for the Blue Blossom account, a Stanbic IBTC current account, with a minimum opening balance of ₦20,000. The form says the bank will exempt that account from the Current Account Maintenance Fee (CAMF). Other accounts may have different opening balances and fees. Ask for the current product sheet, as terms may have changed since October 2022.

Steps: getting it done in one visit

  1. Decide the account type and confirm the current document list with the branch or by calling 0700 909 909 909.
  2. Collect your CAC documents. If you are not yet registered, see registering a business name with CAC.
  3. Get your TIN. Tax administration now sits with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), which replaced FIRS.
  4. Confirm every signatory's BVN and NIN are linked and their details match their ID.
  5. Get both references signed and confirmed.
  6. Prepare passport photographs, IDs and proof of address.
  7. Complete and sign the form, attach everything, and keep copies.
  8. Fund the account with the opening balance.

After the account is open

Keep your CAC filings current. Banks review business accounts and may ask for updated records, and a company whose CAC status lapses can face problems with its account. See CAC annual returns. If documents remain outstanding after opening, the account may be restricted; our guide to a restricted Stanbic IBTC account explains how to clear it.

Common reasons applications are delayed

  • Names that differ between CAC documents, ID and BVN, for example a missing middle name.
  • A referee whose own bank has not confirmed the signature.
  • Proof of address in a name that is not the business or the owner.
  • A director on CAC records who is not on the board resolution.
  • A TIN that is not yet active.

Bring originals as well as photocopies of every document; branches usually check the originals and keep the copies. Where a document is in a name other than the one on CAC records, bring evidence of the link, such as a change-of-name notice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country, holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and comes with Finance, Compliance, Sales and Customer Support agents that prepare work for a person to approve. It can sit alongside a bank account; see Pryme Business multicurrency.
