Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

Splitting your salary across accounts: a simple system

A three-to-four account system for bills, spending, savings and family support, with percentages, a ₦350,000 worked example and transfer costs.

The short answer

Split your take-home pay on payday into separate accounts or pots for bills, everyday spending, savings and family support, using percentages you set once. On a ₦350,000 salary, a 45/25/20/10 split gives ₦157,500 for bills, ₦87,500 for spending, ₦70,000 for savings and ₦35,000 for family; keep the pots at one institution where possible, because transfers of ₦10,000 or more to another bank carry a ₦50 stamp duty paid by the sender from January 2026.

A single current account that receives your salary and pays for everything makes it hard to see what is left. By the third week you know roughly that money is tight, but not whether rent is safe. Splitting the salary on payday gives each naira one job, and the balance in each account tells you the truth at a glance.

The four accounts

Account or potWhat goes inWhat comes out
BillsFixed costs for the monthRent instalment, electricity, data, transport pass, school levies, loan repayments
SpendingVariable living costsFood, fuel, outings, small purchases; the card you carry
SavingsEmergency fund and sinking fundsOnly planned withdrawals: annual rent, fees, emergencies
Family and givingSupport you send othersParents, siblings, church or mosque, contributions

If four feels like too many, merge family into bills: it behaves like a fixed cost for many Nigerian earners. What you should not merge is savings with spending.

Choosing the percentages

There is no correct split. Start from your actual bills, not a rule of thumb. Add up the fixed costs for a typical month and divide by take-home pay; that is your bills percentage. Decide savings next, even if small, then family, and give spending what remains. Our look at whether the 50/30/20 rule works in Nigeria explains why the bills share is often higher here.

Worked example on ₦350,000 take-home

PotShareAmount
Bills45%₦157,500
Spending25%₦87,500
Savings20%₦70,000
Family and giving10%₦35,000
Total100%₦350,000

Check: ₦157,500 + ₦87,500 + ₦70,000 + ₦35,000 = ₦350,000. The spending pot of ₦87,500 works out at about ₦2,900 a day over 30 days, which is the number to remember when shopping. If the bills pot runs dry before month end, the split is wrong, not the system: move a few percentage points from spending and try again for two months.

Automating it

The split only works if it happens before you spend. Two ways to do that:

  • Ask your employer whether payroll can pay part of your salary into a second account. Not every employer offers this, but some do.
  • Set up scheduled transfers in your banking app for the morning after payday, or do the split by hand on payday itself. Check your bank's app for how scheduled transfers work and what they cost.

What transfers cost

From 1 January 2026, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 replaced the old electronic money transfer levy with a ₦50 stamp duty charged to the sender on electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more, as Techeconomy and Kuda's help centre describe. Transfers below ₦10,000, salary payments and transfers between your own accounts at the same institution are exempt. In the example, three monthly transfers from a salary bank to pots at another bank would cost ₦150 a month in stamp duty, before any bank fee; keeping the pots at the same institution avoids it.

Common mistakes

  • Carrying the savings card. If the savings pot has a debit card, leave it at home.
  • Splitting gross pay. Work from what actually lands after tax and pension. Our guide to 2026 PAYE bands shows how take-home is reached.
  • Setting savings at zero until things improve. Even 5% builds the habit and the buffer.
  • Ignoring irregular income. Bonuses and side income should be split too, or they vanish into spending.

Steps

  1. Note your exact take-home pay.
  2. Add up last month's fixed bills and work out the bills share.
  3. Choose savings and family shares; give spending the rest.
  4. Open the pots, ideally at one institution.
  5. Schedule the transfers for payday and review after two months.

Months that do not fit the plan

Some months break any split: December, the month rent falls due, a wedding you must attend. Do not abandon the system; change the percentages for that month only and write down why. For example, in a month with a ₦40,000 wedding contribution, the family pot might take 20% instead of 10%, and spending drops from 25% to 15%. The next month you go back to the normal split.

If you are paid a bonus, a thirteenth month or allowances, decide in advance how they are split. A simple rule such as half to savings, a quarter to a goal and a quarter to spend keeps windfalls from disappearing while still letting you enjoy part of them.

For couples

Couples often keep their own spending pots and pay a fixed share each into a joint bills pot. Splitting bills in proportion to income, rather than fifty-fifty, is usually fairer when one partner earns much more. As an example, if one earns ₦400,000 and the other ₦200,000, a ₦300,000 bills pot could take ₦200,000 and ₦100,000 respectively, two-thirds and one-third.

Where Pryme fits

Within one Pryme Personal Account you can keep spending money in the main balance and set aside bills and savings in separate Savings Boxes, so moving money between them stays inside your own account. The Personal Assistant can prepare the payday split and bill payments for your approval; it never moves money on its own. Open an account to try the split for one month.

Questions people ask

How many bank accounts should I have for my salary?

Three or four is enough for most people: bills, spending, savings and, if it helps, family support. More than that becomes hard to manage.

What percentage of my salary should I save in Nigeria?

Whatever you can sustain after bills; 10 to 20% is a common target, but start with 5% if that is all that fits and raise it later.

Will I pay stamp duty moving money between my own accounts?

Not if both accounts are yours at the same institution, according to the bank notices on the 2026 stamp duty. Transfers of ₦10,000 or more to another bank carry ₦50 paid by the sender.

Can my employer pay my salary into two accounts?

Some employers can split pay across accounts; ask your HR or payroll team. If not, schedule transfers for payday.
