Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

SONCAP certificate for US exports to Nigeria

Which US goods need SONCAP for Nigeria, the PC and SC certificates, SON’s published fees and validity, and how US exporters obtain them in 2026.

The short answer

Most manufactured goods exported from the US to Nigeria need SONCAP certification from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria: a Product Certificate (PC), which the exporter obtains and the buyer uses to open Form M, and a SONCAP Certificate (SC) for each consignment, used for PAAR. Food, medicines, most medical items and used goods other than vehicles are exempt. SON’s published fees are $500 to $2,000 for a PC and $350 per SC.

Which products need SONCAP

SONCAP is SON’s offshore conformity assessment programme. SON’s service page says all imports are regulated except:

  • food
  • drugs and medicines
  • medical items other than equipment
  • raw-material chemicals for bona fide manufacturers
  • military wares
  • contraband
  • used products other than automobiles
  • machinery and spares for bona fide manufacturers’ own use, which go through an Import Permit instead

In practice that covers most consumer and industrial goods a US exporter sends: electronics, appliances, building materials, auto parts, furniture, generators, solar equipment and more. Bureau Veritas’s data sheet adds LPG products and base oil to the exempt list. If you are unsure, ask the accredited firm before you quote.

The certificates

CertificateWho gets itFee (SON)Validity
PC1, unregistered productExporter$5006 months, single use
PC2, registered productExporter$1,00012 months
PC3, licensed productExporter$2,00012 months
SONCAP Certificate (SC)Issued for the importer, per consignment$350One PAAR consignment
Non-Conformity Report (NCR)Where goods fail$350

Fees and validity are from SON’s SONCAP FAQ as at October 2026; the same fees appear in SON’s August 2022 schedule. The amendment fee is $100. Bureau Veritas states that fees are paid by the exporter. SON says a PC or SC is issued within 96 hours, or 24 hours where documents are complete.

How a US exporter obtains them

  1. Choose an accredited firm. SON’s 2022 fee schedule names Bureau Veritas, COTECNA, China Hansom and China Standard Inspection as accredited firms; ask SON or your buyer for the current list.
  2. Apply for the PC. Supply the product information and test evidence the firm asks for, with an HS code of at least four digits. Whether you need a PC1, PC2 or PC3 depends on whether the product is unregistered, registered or licensed with SON.
  3. Send the PC to your buyer to open the Form M. SON says banks accept only PCs from approved firms for Form M.
  4. Apply for the SC for each shipment. Bureau Veritas lists a valid PC, the final invoice, the e-Form M, the transport document, and the importer’s RC number and tax ID, with a 10-digit HS code. Loading and sealing of full containers may be witnessed where the route requires it.
  5. Ship. The buyer uses the SC with the PAAR for clearance.

Since 27 March 2026, SONCAP and Import Permit applications run only on Nigeria’s National Single Window. Accredited firms still issue PCs and SCs on SON’s portal, but activation for Form M and PAAR happens on the Single Window, according to SON’s notice of 25 March 2026.

Machinery, refurbished goods and the Import Permit

Some goods sit outside the PC and SC route. Machinery and spare parts brought in by bona fide manufacturers for their own use, and refurbished products, go through SON’s Import Permit instead, which since March 2026 is also applied for on the National Single Window. SON’s FAQ prices the Import Permit at 5% of FOB value, with a minimum of ₦550,000, so on a large machinery order it can cost far more than a SONCAP certificate would. If you sell refurbished equipment to Nigerian buyers, raise this early: it changes the buyer’s landed cost.

Planning repeat shipments

If you expect to ship the same product to Nigeria several times a year, the PC choice matters. A PC1 is single use and lasts six months, so each new order needs a new one. A PC2 or PC3 lasts 12 months and can support several Form Ms, with only an SC per consignment. Diary the PC expiry date and renew before it lapses, because a buyer cannot open a Form M against an expired certificate.

What happens without SONCAP

Bureau Veritas states that destination inspection is "not allowed": certification must happen before shipment. SON’s FAQ sets the default penalty for regulated goods arriving without SONCAP at 20% of CIF value or ₦2 million, whichever is higher. That cost falls on your buyer, and a buyer hit with it is unlikely to order again.

Worked example

Example only: you ship $30,000 CIF of household appliances under a PC2 ($1,000, valid 12 months) with an SC for the consignment ($350). Certification costs $1,350 for the first shipment. A second shipment within the PC2’s year needs only another SC: $350. Had the first shipment gone without SONCAP, the default penalty would have been 20% of CIF, $6,000, or ₦2 million if that was higher at the day’s rate.

What to check first

  • Whether your product is exempt, regulated, or needs an Import Permit.
  • Which PC route fits: PC1 for a one-off, PC2 or PC3 if you will ship regularly.
  • Whether the accredited firm you use is current on SON’s list.
  • That HS codes match between the PC, SC, Form M and invoice.
  • That second-hand vehicles meet the age limit; Bureau Veritas states up to 8 years from manufacture for SONCAP.

See how Form M works and exporting US electronics to Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

SONCAP fees are paid in dollars and your Nigerian buyer may pay you in naira or dollars. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds both, with Swap showing the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme’s services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

What is SONCAP certification?

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria’s offshore conformity programme. Regulated goods need a Product Certificate to open Form M and a SONCAP Certificate for each consignment for clearance.

How much does SONCAP cost?

SON lists $500 for PC1, $1,000 for PC2, $2,000 for PC3, $350 per SONCAP Certificate and $350 for a non-conformity report, as at October 2026. Fees are paid by the exporter.

Which products are exempt from SONCAP?

Food, medicines, medical items other than equipment, raw-material chemicals for bona fide manufacturers, military wares, contraband and used products other than automobiles.

Can SONCAP be done after goods arrive in Nigeria?

No. Bureau Veritas states destination inspection is not allowed, and SON’s default penalty is 20% of CIF value or ₦2 million, whichever is higher.
