Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Levies a small shop in Abeokuta pays: OGIRS and LGA rates

The taxes and levies a small shop in Abeokuta may be asked to pay, who can lawfully collect them, and the receipts to insist on before you hand over cash.

The short answer

A small shop in Abeokuta can expect state personal income tax through the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), local government charges from Abeokuta South or Abeokuta North, a waste bill, and possibly signage and market charges. We could not find a current official rate card for these, so ask OGIRS and your local government for written amounts, pay only into official channels, and keep a receipt that names the law or bye-law behind each charge.

Ask ten shop owners in Abeokuta what they pay each year and you will get ten different lists. Some pay a yearly state tax, some pay a council fee, some pay daily tickets to people who appear with a receipt book. Not every collector is legitimate, and not every legitimate charge is collected properly. This guide sets out the categories, who should collect them, and how to protect yourself.

Who can charge a shop in Abeokuta

Three levels of government and a few private bodies may ask a small shop for money:

CollectorWhat it typically coversLawful if
OGIRS (state)Personal income tax on your profit; state chargesPaid through OGIRS channels with an OGIRS receipt
Local government (Abeokuta South or North)Council charges such as shop or premises permitsBacked by a bye-law; receipt issued by the council
Ogun State Waste Management Authority and its PSP operatorsRefuse collection for your shopBilled by an accredited operator for your zone
Market associationDues for running the market (cleaning, security)A private arrangement, not a government tax
Federal (NRS, CAC)Company tax, VAT where applicable, CAC annual returnPaid online on official portals

Personal income tax through OGIRS

Most small shops in Abeokuta are run as sole proprietorships. The owner's profit is generally taxed as personal income by the state where the owner lives, which for Abeokuta residents is OGIRS. OGIRS has said it wants to bring more of the informal sector into personal income tax, and has been compiling a database of commercial okada riders, according to a BusinessDay report of remarks by the governor's special adviser on revenue.

Shops without proper books may be assessed on an estimated basis. We did not find an official OGIRS page setting out how small-trader assessments work or what they cost, so ask OGIRS for the basis of any assessment in writing, and keep records of your sales and costs so you can challenge an estimate that is too high.

Local government and other charges

Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North local governments may charge shops under their own bye-laws. Common types of council charges across Nigeria include permits for premises, signboards and market stalls. Because we could not open a current rate list for either council, we have not printed amounts. Visit the revenue office at your local government secretariat and ask for the current list, signed or stamped.

Tickets and harmonisation

Ogun has tried to bring daily tickets under control. BusinessDay reported that the state denied raising okada riders' daily ticket from ₦300 to ₦400 and that it was working to stop arbitrary charges by unions. The same principle applies to shops: a daily ticket should come from an authorised body, carry the state or council's name, and match an amount you can verify.

Waste

Refuse collection is billed through the waste authority's private operators. The state has also warned that dumping refuse in drains or streets can attract ₦25,000 on arrest and, on conviction, a fine of up to ₦2,000,000, three months' imprisonment or both, under section 34(1) of the 2020 law establishing the authority. Our guide to waste levies in Abeokuta explains how to confirm your operator.

Receipts to insist on

  1. A receipt or electronic payment confirmation in the name of the agency (OGIRS, the council or the operator), not a person.
  2. Your shop name and address on it.
  3. The period covered: day, quarter or year.
  4. The amount in figures and words.
  5. A reference number you can quote later.

What to do when someone demands money

  • Ask for their ID card and the name of the agency they work for.
  • Ask which law or bye-law the charge falls under.
  • Ask for the amount in writing before you pay.
  • If you doubt them, say you will pay at the agency's office and go there.
  • Keep a file of every receipt, and photograph each one.

Worked example: a year's file for a provisions shop

Example only, to show how to keep track rather than what you will pay. Mrs Adeyemi runs a provisions shop in Kuto. She keeps one folder with: her OGIRS assessment and payment receipt for the year, the council's receipt for her premises permit, four quarterly waste bills with payment slips, her market association dues card, and her CAC business name annual return confirmation. When a collector appears asking for "shop tax", she shows the folder and asks which of these he is collecting for. Our guide on registering a business in Abeokuta covers the CAC side, and doing business in Ogun State gives the wider context.

Where Pryme fits

Any Pryme customer can generate a regular or verifiable receipt or statement through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when you need to prove a payment was made. See receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

What taxes does a small shop pay in Abeokuta?

Usually personal income tax to OGIRS, local government charges such as premises or signage permits, and a waste bill. Ask OGIRS and your council for the current amounts in writing.

How do I know if a levy collector in Ogun is genuine?

Ask for ID, the agency name and the law behind the charge. Pay to an official account or at the agency's office and insist on an official receipt.

Is market association due a government tax?

No. Market association dues are a private arrangement for running the market, not a state or council tax.

What is the fine for dumping refuse in Ogun State?

Under section 34(1) of the 2020 waste law, ₦25,000 on arrest, and on conviction up to ₦2,000,000, three months' imprisonment or both.
