Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

All diaspora

Recipient uses a maiden or married name: will it go through?

How a gap between a recipient's married name and the name on their Nigerian bank account affects a transfer, and how both sides can avoid a hold.

The short answer

A transfer to Nigeria is checked against the name on the bank account, not the name the recipient now uses. If her account is still in her maiden name, send in that name; if you use her married name, the payment may be held or returned until the names line up. The lasting fix is for the account holder to update the bank record, which banks do with a marriage certificate, affidavit or newspaper publication.

Many Nigerian women keep a bank account opened before marriage, and many use a married name on passports and social media afterwards. Neither is a problem on its own. It becomes one when the sender abroad types one name and the bank account carries another.

Which name the transfer is checked against

Nigerian accounts are identified by a 10-digit number, and NIBSS describes name enquiry as the step that lets the sending institution check the beneficiary's details by that number. The name that comes back is the one on the bank's records, which is tied to the holder's BVN. Some payout partners are explicit: GTBank's MoneyGram page says funds must be sent in the account holder's first name and surname.

So the rule for the sender is simple: use the name the account shows, not the name you call her by. If she has not yet updated her bank, that is her maiden name.

What happens when the names differ

SituationLikely result
You send in the maiden name and the account is in the maiden nameNormal processing
You send in the married name, account still in the maiden name, same first nameMay be paid, or held for review; depends on the app and the bank
Different first name or order of names, and a different surnameHigher chance of a hold or a return
Cash pickup in a name that does not match her IDCollection may be refused; WorldRemit says the ID must show the full name matching the transfer

A hold costs time rather than money in most cases, but a returned payment can be converted back at a different rate. Why a name mismatch puts a transfer on hold and Remitly name mismatches cover the release process.

Fixing it on the Nigerian side

The CBN's BVN framework, as summarised by Technext, allows a name change for marriage, divorce or religion, supported by a marriage or divorce certificate, an affidavit or a newspaper publication. A completely different name, rather than a change of surname, needs clearance from the NFIU. In practice the account holder asks her bank to update the name, and the bank updates the BVN record.

  1. Update the NIN first if she uses it as ID. NIMC accepts a sworn affidavit, newspaper extract or marriage certificate for a name change.
  2. Take the marriage certificate and ID to the bank, or use its remote process if it has one.
  3. Wait for the bank to confirm the account name has changed, then check in her own app.
  4. Tell regular senders the new name and confirm it shows on their next payment.

If she has a Nigerian passport, the Nigeria High Commission in London says a name change on the passport is only by marriage or divorce, with the marriage certificate and the husband's consent letter and data page. Keeping passport, NIN, BVN and bank account in the same name avoids the same problem at the High Commission and at the bank. For BVN details, see BVN correction: CBN rules for name and date-of-birth changes.

If the payment is already on hold

Contact the provider you sent with rather than the Nigerian bank; the sending firm controls the release. Have ready the transfer reference, the recipient's name as it appears on the account, and an explanation of the difference. Some firms will ask the recipient to confirm their identity, and a marriage certificate showing both names helps where they accept it. Avoid cancelling and resending the same amount several times in a row: repeated attempts can look like an attempt to get round a check and may prompt a longer review. If the provider returns the money, ask what rate the refund will be converted at before you resend.

Once the payment is released or resent in the right name, update your saved recipient so the next one does not stop in the same place.

Before you send: a short checklist

  • Ask her for a screenshot of the account name from her own banking app.
  • Enter first name and surname exactly in that order and spelling.
  • Leave out titles such as Mrs or Dr unless the account name includes them.
  • If your app shows the returned account name before you confirm, compare it.
  • For a first payment after a name change, send a small amount and wait.

Where Pryme fits

With Pryme Send you enter the bank and 10-digit number and check the details before you approve. Saved recipients keep the name you used last time, which helps when a family member's account name changes. Receipts are available for each payment, and a verifiable receipt made with VerifyDoc.ai can be checked by anyone.

Questions people ask

Should I send money in my wife's maiden name or married name?

Use the name shown on her Nigerian bank account. If she has not updated it since the wedding, that is the maiden name.

Will a transfer fail if only the surname is different?

Not always, but it may be held for review. Matching the account name avoids the risk.

How do I change my name on my Nigerian bank account after marriage?

Ask your bank, with your marriage certificate and ID. The CBN BVN framework also accepts an affidavit or newspaper publication for marriage name changes.

Does changing my bank name change my BVN?

The bank updates the name on the BVN record as part of the change; check with your bank that both now match.
