Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Sending money home to Nigeria on a study permit

International students in Canada can use remittance apps. What the app asks a student, where limits come from, and how work-hour rules fit in.

The short answer

A study permit does not stop you sending money to Nigeria: the federal rules we checked set no personal cap on how much a student may send. The limits you meet come from the remittance app (based on how far you have verified) and from your Canadian bank. Expect the app to ask for valid photo ID and, for larger or frequent sends, where the money came from.

We found no Canadian rule that caps transfers by immigration status. FINTRAC's money services business guidance sets duties for the provider: register, verify identity, keep records and report certain transactions, such as international electronic funds transfers of C$10,000 or more. Those are reports the provider files, not a ceiling on you. IRCC's study permit pages deal with study and work conditions, not with money you send abroad.

What does exist are app limits. Remitly, for example, says its limits vary by verification level, delivery method and destination. A new account usually starts low and rises as you verify more.

What a remittance app asks a student

  • Photo ID. FINTRAC's identity guidance accepts government-issued photo ID from a federal, provincial or territorial government, or a foreign government document equivalent to a Canadian one, if it is authentic, valid and current. A Nigerian passport generally fits that description; each app decides which documents it lists.
  • A selfie or video. For remote checks, FINTRAC describes comparing the document with a live video or selfie using technology. See why an app asks for a selfie video.
  • A Canadian address and phone. LemFi's sign-up page, for instance, asks for your residential address and a phone number from a supported country.
  • Source of funds, sometimes. If you send more than your known income suggests, expect questions. Have a payslip, a scholarship letter or a statement showing money from family.

Your money sources and the work rules

Many students send money earned from part-time work. IRCC's off-campus work page says eligible full-time students can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during regular academic sessions and without a weekly cap during scheduled breaks, with a valid study permit carrying work conditions and a SIN. Service Canada notes that SINs for temporary residents start with 9 and expire with the permit. If your SIN has expired, payroll and some apps may ask questions until you update it.

Money your parents sent you for fees and then you send back, or money you send on behalf of classmates, can look unusual to an app. Sending other people's money as a service is a money services business activity in FINTRAC's terms; do not collect from friends and send in one block.

Worked example

Example only: Chiamaka studies in Halifax and works 20 hours a week. She sends C$300 a month to her mother in Owerri. The app accepted her Nigerian passport and a selfie at sign-up. In December she wants to send C$2,500 for a family event. The app asks for proof of funds; she uploads three months of payslips and a bank statement showing her savings. The transfer goes through after review. The app showed the rate and the fee before she approved.

Banking basics for students

The FCAC says you can open a Canadian bank account as a non-citizen with proper ID, though you may need to visit a branch. It also notes that some institutions offer no-cost accounts for students and for newcomers in their first year. A Canadian account gives you Interac, debit and bank-debit funding options for remittance apps.

What to check first

  1. Your passport and study permit are in date, and the name matches across both and your bank account.
  2. Your app account is fully verified before a large send.
  3. You can show where the money came from.
  4. You are sending your own money, not pooling other students' funds.

Sending to cover your own costs in Nigeria

Not every student transfer is to family. Some students pay a Nigerian phone line, a loan or a younger sibling's fees. These are ordinary personal transfers. If an app asks about the purpose, give the true one; "family support", "education" and "personal bills" are typical options. A mismatch between the purpose you select and the receiver's relationship to you is a common reason for a review.

If your parents in Nigeria send you money for tuition, keep the trail: their transfer, the conversion, and the payment to your school. If you later send part of it back, you can show that it is the same money returning rather than unexplained income. That trail also helps if IRCC or your school ever asks how your studies are funded.

Common reasons a student's transfer is held

  • An expired study permit or passport on file with the app.
  • A name on the bank card or account that differs from the passport, for example a missing middle name.
  • Several transfers to different people in a short period.
  • A first large transfer soon after opening the account.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company, not a bank. Outside Nigeria its activities are carried out through regulated partners, and Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Students can open an account from Canada, hold Canadian dollars in a multicurrency account, and send to Nigeria with the rate and the fee shown before approval.

Questions people ask

Is there a limit on how much an international student can send to Nigeria?

We found no federal cap by status. Limits come from the app and your bank, and large amounts may trigger questions about source of funds.

Can I use my Nigerian passport to verify a remittance app in Canada?

Usually, if it is valid and current and the app lists foreign passports. FINTRAC's guidance allows foreign government ID equivalent to a Canadian document.

Will sending money home affect my study permit?

We found no IRCC rule linking remittances to study permit status. Keep records of your income; for immigration questions, check IRCC or a licensed adviser.

Can I send my classmates' money together with mine?

Avoid it. Collecting and sending others' money can count as a money services business activity, and the app may block it.
