Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Sending your first US tax refund home: plan it first

Your first US refund can feel like spare money. How to split it between bills, savings and family in Nigeria, and what a transfer really costs.

The short answer

Before you send your first US tax refund to Nigeria, decide its split in advance: cover any debts and a starter emergency fund in the US first, then send a fixed amount home for a named purpose. When you send, compare the total cost, not just the fee: the transfer fee, the exchange-rate margin against the mid-market rate, speed and payout method. US remittance rules give you disclosures before you pay and 30 minutes to cancel.

For many Nigerians, the first US tax refund is the first lump sum since arriving. Family at home often knows it is coming. The risk is that it disappears in a week into requests nobody planned for, while your own US buffer stays empty. A plan made before the money arrives keeps both sides fair.

Know when the money will land

The IRS Refunds page (reviewed 16 October 2026) says to expect a refund about 3 weeks after e-filing, or 6 or more weeks after a mailed return is received. EITC refunds are held until mid-February, and returns claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit take longer to review. If you or a family member filed with a new ITIN, add the ITIN assignment time; see why ITIN refunds are slower. Do not promise anyone a date before Where's My Refund shows your refund as approved.

Decide the split before it arrives

A refund is your own money returned, often because too much tax was withheld. Treat it as savings first. A simple order that works for many households:

  1. Clear costly debt. A credit card balance or a buy-now-pay-later plan usually costs more than any return you will earn.
  2. Start or top up an emergency fund. One month of rent and bills is a reasonable first target; see building an emergency fund.
  3. Send home for a named purpose, such as a parent's medical bill, school fees or a house project, with an amount you agree in advance.
  4. Keep a small share for yourself, so the refund does not feel like it all went out.

A worked split

Example only. Ifeoma receives a $2,400 refund. She has $600 on a credit card and no emergency fund.

UseShareAmount
Pay off credit card25%$600
Emergency fund35%$840
Send to her mother in Enugu for a roof repair30%$720
Kept for herself10%$240
Total100%$2,400

If she sent the whole $2,400 instead, the credit card balance would keep charging interest and the next car repair would go on the card again.

What sending really costs

Every transfer to Nigeria has the same parts, whichever provider you use:

  • Transfer fee: the visible charge, which may vary by amount, payment method and speed.
  • Exchange-rate margin: the gap between the rate you get and the mid-market rate. On a $720 transfer, a rate that is 1% worse than mid-market costs $7.20 in naira terms, even if the fee is zero.
  • Speed: faster options, such as paying by debit card, can cost more.
  • Payout method: bank deposit, cash pickup or a wallet, each with its own limits.
  • Limits: providers set limits by verification level; a large one-off transfer may trigger ID checks.

Compare the amount your family will receive in naira, not the fee alone. Provider prices change daily, so check each provider's own quote on the day you send.

Your rights when you send

The CFPB explains that a remittance transfer provider must show the fees, taxes, exchange rate and amount to be delivered before you pay, and a receipt after. You generally have up to 30 minutes to cancel for free unless the money has been picked up or deposited, and 180 days from the disclosed delivery date to report an error. Transfers of $15 or less are not covered.

If the refund came from credits

Some refunds are large because of refundable credits for children, such as the Additional Child Tax Credit, rather than over-withholding. That money is meant for a household with children in the US, and the IRS may review those claims more closely. Keep the refund in the US until the review window passes and you are sure the amount is final, before you commit it to a project at home.

Make the money count at home

Sending for a purpose works better than sending a lump sum. Pay the school, hospital or builder directly where you can, ask for a receipt, and agree a short update when the job is done. If you also support parents each month, keep the refund separate from that monthly amount so it does not reset expectations; see setting a monthly support amount.

What to check first

  1. Your refund status in Where's My Refund.
  2. Any debt costing you interest.
  3. How many weeks of bills your US savings cover.
  4. The naira amount your family will receive, on the day, from each provider you are considering.
  5. Who at home will receive the money and what it is for.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from the US and holds dollars and naira. When you send, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. A Naira Savings Box can hold money for a planned family cost in Nigeria until it is due. See sending money and Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

How long does a first US tax refund take?

The IRS says about 3 weeks after e-filing, or 6 or more weeks for a mailed return. ITIN applications and some credits take longer.

Should I send all my tax refund to Nigeria?

That is your choice, but clearing costly debt and building a small US emergency fund first protects you and your family from the next unexpected bill.

What is the cheapest way to send a refund to Nigeria?

Prices change daily. Compare the naira amount delivered, including the exchange-rate margin and fee, on each provider's own quote on the day you send.

Can I cancel a transfer to Nigeria after paying?

US remittance rules generally give you 30 minutes to cancel for free, unless the money has already been picked up or deposited.
