Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Personal transfer or business payment: which to choose to Nigeria

Paying a Lagos supplier from a personal UK remittance app? How purpose choices, provider terms and payout rules decide which route is right.

The short answer

If the money pays for goods or services you will sell, use in a business, or that are owed to a Nigerian company, it is a business payment, and you should say so rather than pick a family or gift purpose. UK money transfer firms must assess the purpose of each transaction under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, so a mismatch can lead to holds, questions or a closed account. Check the provider's terms: some consumer services are built for personal transfers and can cancel a payment sent to a business account.

Why the label you pick is not a formality

Every regulated UK money transfer firm has to understand what a payment is for. Regulation 28 of the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017 requires a firm to identify and verify its customer and to "assess, and where appropriate obtain information on, the purpose and intended nature" of the relationship or transaction. The same regulation requires ongoing monitoring so that transactions stay "consistent with" what the firm knows about the customer and their risk profile.

In practice the purpose drop-down, the relationship question and any follow-up messages are how the firm meets that duty. When you choose "family support" for a payment that is plainly a supplier invoice, the record and the activity no longer match. That is what tends to trigger a review, a request for documents or, if it keeps happening, the end of the relationship. Choosing the accurate purpose is the safer option, even when it feels like it will cause questions.

Personal or business: a simple test

Ask who the money is for and why. These patterns help:

SituationUsually personalUsually business
Money to your mother for food and rentYes
School fees for a sibling, paid to the schoolYes (education)
Paying a tailor in Aba for clothes you will resell in the UKYes
Paying a builder for your own family house in EnuguPersonal purpose, but a contractor paymentCan look like business to the provider
Settling an invoice from a Nigerian company for your UK firmYes, ideally from the business
Paying a freelancer in Lagos for design work for your side hustleYes

The builder case shows why the honest answer sometimes sits between the two. The money is for your own home, so the purpose is personal, but the recipient is a contractor and the amounts are large. Most apps let you choose a purpose such as property or construction, or add a note. Use it, and keep the contract and receipts so you can answer if asked.

What provider terms and payout rules mean for business payments

Consumer remittance services are usually designed for people sending money to people. Their terms of use set out what is allowed, so read the clause on permitted use before you pay a supplier. Western Union's UK tracking help lists, among reasons a transfer can be cancelled, that "you sent money to a business account instead of a personal account". When that happens the money comes back to you, and the supplier still has not been paid.

The Nigerian side matters too. Under the CBN directive of 24 March 2026, effective 1 May 2026, licensed international money transfer operators pay recipients in naira and route flows through naira settlement accounts at authorised dealer banks, according to the Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie summary. A supplier who expects dollars or who invoices a company account may not be reachable through a consumer remittance route at all. Payout methods differ by provider: Taptap Send lists bank deposit and mobile money for Nigeria, and WorldRemit lists bank transfer, cash pickup, mobile money and airtime.

When to use a business account instead

  • You run a UK limited company or sole trade and the supplier invoices it: pay from the business, so the cost sits in your business records.
  • Payments are regular or large: a business route expects invoices and is set up for them.
  • The recipient is a Nigerian company: pay its corporate account in the name on the invoice.
  • You need proof for HMRC or an accountant that a cost was a business expense.

For the business side of this question, see sending money to Nigeria from a UK business account.

If you still pay a supplier from a personal app

Sometimes a personal app is the only practical option, for example a one-off purchase from a small trader. If the provider's terms allow it, do these things:

  1. Pick the purpose that matches, such as goods or services, even if "family support" is the default.
  2. Enter the recipient's name exactly as it appears on their Nigerian account; a mismatch can stop the transfer.
  3. Keep the invoice, chat messages agreeing the price and the transfer receipt together.
  4. Answer any provider question promptly and with documents, not a changed story.
  5. Do not split one invoice into many small transfers to avoid questions; monitoring rules look at regularity and size, and splitting can itself be treated as a warning sign.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country, and one account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each. If you trade with Nigeria, a Business multicurrency account keeps supplier payments out of your personal records, and invoicing gives each payment a matching document. Sending works through Send: the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

For the wider question of what each purpose option means, read what purpose of transfer to choose.

Questions people ask

Can I use a remittance app to pay my supplier in Nigeria?

Only if the provider's terms allow it. Some consumer services are built for person-to-person transfers, and Western Union lists sending to a business account instead of a personal one as a reason a transfer can be cancelled.

What happens if I choose family support for a business payment?

The record no longer matches the activity. UK firms must monitor that transactions are consistent with what they know about you, so a mismatch can lead to questions, a hold or the account being closed.

Is paying a builder for my family house a business payment?

The purpose is personal, but the recipient is a contractor. Choose a purpose such as property or construction if offered, add a note, and keep the contract and receipts.

Can I send dollars to a Nigerian supplier through a remittance app?

Licensed transfer operators pay recipients in naira under the CBN directive effective 1 May 2026. If a supplier insists on dollars, you need a different route and should check it with your bank or provider.
