Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

SEC Nigeria's list of unregistered schemes: how to check

Where the SEC publishes its warnings, sealed-operator list and register of capital market operators, and step-by-step checks before you invest.

The short answer

SEC Nigeria publishes its warnings in three main places on sec.gov.ng: the Known Investment Scams page, which includes a schedule of 38 illegal operators it has sealed up; the Companies Facing Enforcement Action page; and the Find a Registered Operator directory of licensed firms. Absence from the scam list does not make a scheme safe, so the stronger test is whether the firm itself appears in the register for the activity it is offering.

Where the SEC publishes warnings

Whistleblowing and Information for Harmed InvestorsHow to report a scheme and what victims can doReport or seek help

All of these are linked from the SEC's homepage at sec.gov.ng. Use the SEC's own site rather than lists reposted on social media, which are often out of date or altered.

What the Known Investment Scams page contains

The page, dated 14 August 2023 when we checked in October 2026, describes five types of illegal operator: phantom investment schemes, Ponzi schemes, offshore shell companies, unlicensed cryptocurrency platforms and fake investment advisers. It gives red flags (unrealistic promises, no regulatory approvals, opaque operations) and then a "Schedule of Illegal Operators Sealed Up".

That schedule lists 38 companies, with the area they operated in and the year the SEC sealed them up, running from 2013 to 2022. Examples include MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (online, 2016) and Ovaioza Farm Produce Storage Business (Abuja, 2022).

Why the register is the stronger check

A warning list tells you who has been caught. The register tells you who is allowed. The SEC's Find a Registered Operator directory shows, for each firm, its name, CAC number, function (for example broker/dealer, fund or portfolio manager, corporate sub-broker, issuing house or corporate investment adviser), address and contacts, account status and registration date. The directory urges investors to verify every platform and carries a disclaimer that you should still do your own checks; some records may be out of date.

The question to ask is not just "is this company registered?" but "is it registered for what it is offering me?" A firm registered as an investment adviser is not thereby licensed to take deposits or run a fund.

Reading a register entry

When you find a firm in the directory, check more than the name:

  • Function: does it match what the firm is selling you?
  • Account status: the directory shows a status such as active. Anything else is a reason to ask questions.
  • Address and contacts: compare them with the ones the firm gave you. Scammers sometimes borrow the name of a real registered firm but use their own phone numbers and bank accounts.
  • Directors and sponsored individuals: the person you are dealing with may claim to work for the firm; ask the firm, using the contacts in the register, to confirm.

Steps: checking a scheme before you invest

  1. Get the full legal name of the company taking your money, from its documents or the account name on the payment details. A trading name or app name is not enough.
  2. Search Find a Registered Operator for that legal name and note the registered function.
  3. Check Registered FinTech Operators if it is an app, crowdfunding portal or crypto platform.
  4. Check Known Investment Scams and Companies Facing Enforcement Action for the name and any former names.
  5. Match the bank account: money for an SEC-supervised product should go to the firm or a named custodian or trustee, never to an individual's personal account.
  6. Test the promise: fixed high monthly returns, rewards for recruiting others, and pressure to pay quickly are the classic signs. Our guides to 'guaranteed 30% monthly' offers and MLMs versus pyramid schemes show the arithmetic.
  7. If in doubt, contact the SEC through the contact details on its website before paying.

If you have already paid

  • Stop sending money, including "fees" to release your returns.
  • Keep every record: transfers, chats, receipts, names and account numbers.
  • Report through the SEC's whistleblowing page and read its Information for Harmed Investors page.
  • Report to your bank quickly and ask whether the receiving account can be flagged.
  • Ignore anyone who offers to recover your money for a fee; that is often the same scheme returning.

For app-based investing, see how to check a stock trading app's SEC registration and which crypto exchanges are SEC-licensed. Our broader guide to Ponzi and investment scams covers the patterns in detail.

Questions people ask

Where can I find the SEC list of illegal investment schemes?

On sec.gov.ng, under For Investors, the Known Investment Scams page has a schedule of illegal operators the SEC has sealed up. The Companies Facing Enforcement Action page lists current action.

How do I check if a company is registered with SEC Nigeria?

Search its full legal name in the SEC's Find a Registered Operator directory and check the function it is registered for. For apps, also check the Registered FinTech Operators page.

If a scheme is not on the SEC scam list, is it safe?

No. The list records operators the SEC has already sealed up, 38 when we checked. Most illegal schemes never appear on it. Check that the firm is registered for what it offers.

How do I report an investment scam to the SEC?

Use the whistleblowing page on sec.gov.ng, and read the Information for Harmed Investors page. Also tell your bank about the payments quickly.
