Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Christmas, burials and seasons that move prices in Asaba

How December homecoming, burial and wedding weekends, school resumption and the rainy and flood season push up hotel, transport and food prices in Asaba.

The short answer

Prices in Asaba rise most in December, when people return home for Christmas and New Year and hotels, bus fares and foodstuff all climb; burial and wedding weekends, school resumption and the rainy season add smaller spikes through the year. In December 2022 one operator charged ₦27,800 from Lagos to Onitsha, against ₦10,000 to ₦18,000 earlier that year (Peoples Gazette). Booking and buying early is the main defence.

Why Asaba prices move with the calendar

Asaba is a state capital and a gateway between the South-West, the Niger Delta and the South-East. Many people from Delta and neighbouring states live elsewhere and travel home for holidays and family events. When thousands arrive in the same weeks, demand for rooms, transport, food and event services jumps while supply stays fixed. Prices in Asaba also start high: in December 2023 the Delta governor summoned traders from Ogbeogonogo and Oko markets over high prices "particularly in Asaba" (The Guardian Nigeria, 11 December 2023).

December homecoming

This is the biggest swing of the year. Expect:

  • Bus fares into the region to rise sharply. Peoples Gazette found GIGM charging ₦27,800 Lagos to Onitsha in December 2022, against ₦10,000 to ₦18,000 for Lagos to the South-East and South-South earlier. Today's fares are higher; check operators directly.
  • Hotels and shortlets to fill, with higher rates and minimum stays on the busiest nights around Christmas and New Year.
  • Foodstuff, especially rice, oil, livestock and drinks, to rise as families buy for gatherings.
  • Keke and cab fares to rise in traffic around markets and the bridge approaches.

National fare data shows the background trend. NBS Transport Fare Watch put the average intercity bus fare at ₦8,108.81 in February 2026 (The Guardian Nigeria) and ₦9,699.55 in May 2026 (Nairametrics), before any festive surge. Check the latest NBS release for the current figure.

Burials, weddings and other family events

Burials in Delta and the wider region are often large, multi-day events, held at weekends and commonly bunched in the dry months and in December. They raise demand for canopies, chairs, caterers, livestock, drinks, uniforms (aso ebi) and hotel rooms in the town concerned. If a big burial or wedding is held in your area, local prices for these items can rise that weekend. Book vendors early, ask for a written quote and pay a deposit only against a receipt.

If you are hosting visitors for an event, agree hotel or shortlet rates in writing before the weekend, because walk-in prices are usually the highest.

School resumption

In September, January and April, families pay school fees and buy uniforms, books and shoes in the same weeks. Prices of school items rise and cash is tight. See our Asaba school fees guide.

Rainy season and flood risk

Asaba sits on the River Niger, and riverside parts of Delta State have been reported flooded in past rainy seasons. During the rains, bad roads slow transport and fares can rise, and when roads around farming areas are cut, food supply to markets can tighten. Check the current federal flood outlook and Delta State emergency announcements each year, and if you live near the river, keep documents and savings where water cannot reach them. Our guide on money in flood season covers preparation.

A worked example: buying early

An example with assumed prices: a family needs a 50kg bag of rice, a 25-litre keg of oil and a goat for Christmas. Bought in early November: rice ₦80,000, oil ₦75,000, goat ₦90,000, total ₦245,000. Bought in the week before Christmas at assumed prices 15% higher: ₦245,000 × 1.15 = ₦281,750. Buying early saves ₦36,750 in this example, if you can store the goods safely.

Seasons that bring prices down

Not every season pushes prices up. After the festive period, January is often quieter: returnees leave, hotel and shortlet demand falls, and traders with unsold stock may bargain harder. Farm produce such as yam and fresh vegetables tends to be cheaper around harvest, when supply is high, and dearer in the lean months before it. If your budget is flexible, shift big purchases and non-essential travel into these quieter windows.

The same logic applies to rent. Many tenancies renew at the start of the year, and agents are busiest then; looking for a flat mid-year may give you more room to negotiate. See our Asaba rent guide for example ranges.

What to plan

  1. Book December travel and rooms by October.
  2. Buy durable foodstuff a month or more ahead.
  3. Set aside event contributions monthly, not in the week of the event.
  4. Keep a small cash buffer for transport surges, and pay vendors by transfer for a record.

If you run a business in Asaba, the same calendar works in reverse: stock up before December, agree supplier prices early, and expect cash to flow in strongly in the festive weeks and slow down in January. Planning stock and staff around these swings protects your margins when costs rise.

Where Pryme fits

A Naira Savings Box lets you put aside a December fund through the year; read saving for December. If family abroad send money for the season, a Pryme account receives USD, GBP or EUR and keeps it in that currency until you choose to convert with Swap.

Questions people ask

When are prices highest in Asaba?

December, around Christmas and New Year homecoming. Burial and wedding weekends and school resumption bring smaller spikes.

How much is Lagos to Asaba bus fare in December?

It changes yearly. In December 2022 one operator charged ₦27,800 Lagos to Onitsha. Check operators for today's fare and book early.

Does flooding affect prices in Asaba?

It can, by slowing transport and cutting supply routes. Check the current flood outlook and state announcements during the rains.

How can I save on Christmas shopping in Asaba?

Buy durable items a month or more ahead, book travel early and pool bulk purchases with family. In our example, buying early saved ₦36,750.
