Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sanctions screening for Canadian small firms using AI

Why Canadian small businesses that trade abroad should screen customers and suppliers against sanctions lists, and how an AI agent runs the checks.

The short answer

Canadian sanctions law prohibits dealing with listed persons and certain countries, and it applies to Canadian businesses of every size. A small firm that sells, buys or pays abroad should screen customers, suppliers and contractors against Canada's lists, and US lists where US exposure exists. An AI agent can run the checks on every new party and change, hold matches, and record each result, while a person decides every possible match.

Sanctions sound like a concern for banks and large exporters. In practice, a Canadian design studio paying a contractor overseas, or a distributor shipping parts to a new buyer, faces the same prohibitions. This article explains the basics, the lists to check, and how an AI agent makes screening routine. It is general information, not legal advice.

What Canadian sanctions do

Canada imposes sanctions under laws including the Special Economic Measures Act and the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act. Global Affairs Canada publishes the current measures by country and regime. In general they prohibit people in Canada, and Canadians abroad, from dealing in property of listed persons, providing them with financial or related services, and in some regimes exporting certain goods or services to particular countries.

The rules apply to small businesses as they do to banks. A bank screening your payments does not remove your own obligation not to deal with a listed person.

Which lists to check

  • Canada's consolidated autonomous sanctions list and the country pages Global Affairs Canada publishes.
  • United Nations sanctions implemented in Canada.
  • US lists, such as the OFAC sanctions list, if you deal in US dollars, with US customers or suppliers, or through US banks. US rules can reach transactions that touch the US system.
  • Lists of other places you trade with, such as the UK or EU, where your contracts or partners require it.

When to screen

EventScreen?Why
New customer, supplier or contractorYes, before the first transactionAvoid dealing with a listed party at all
Change of name, owner, address or bank detailsYesChanges are when risk enters
Lists updatedRescreen existing partiesSomeone can be listed after you started trading
Payment to a new countryCheck the country measuresSome regimes restrict whole sectors
Routine repeat payment, nothing changedPeriodic rescreenProportionate to risk

What an AI agent does

  1. Screens each new party's name, aliases, country and owners against the lists you have chosen.
  2. Handles near matches by holding the transaction and sending the evidence to a person, rather than deciding a match is a false positive.
  3. Rescreens your whole customer and supplier base when lists change.
  4. Records every screen: the date, the list version, the result and who cleared any hold.
  5. Refuses transactions to destinations your policy blocks, and logs the refusal with the reason.

Name matching is where judgement is needed. Common names produce many near matches, and transliterations vary. An agent can rank them by strength and collect the extra information, such as date of birth or registration number, that lets a person clear them quickly. It should never clear a match on its own.

A proportionate screening policy

A small firm does not need a bank's screening programme, but it does need a written one. A short policy can cover which lists you check and why; which parties you screen, including owners and directors of business customers where you can identify them; when you rescreen; who may clear a near match; and how long you keep the records. The policy is what the agent works from. Without it, the agent has to escalate everything, which is safe but slow. With it, the routine checks run unattended and only the near matches reach a person. Review the policy when you enter a new market or start trading in a new currency, and at least once a year even if nothing has changed, so that it still matches how the business actually trades.

If there is a real match

Stop the transaction and do not tell the counterparty why. Canadian measures generally require a person in Canada to disclose to the RCMP and CSIS property in their possession or control that they believe belongs to a listed person, and some regimes have reporting duties to regulators. Take legal advice promptly. An agent's part is to hold everything as it was and preserve the record.

A worked example

Example: a Montreal machinery parts distributor adds 40 new overseas buyers a year. Its agent screens each one against Canada's and the US lists at onboarding. One new buyer's director has a near match on a listed individual: same family name, different date of birth on the buyer's registration documents. The agent holds the first order of C$18,000, puts the comparison in front of the owner, and records the owner's decision to clear it with the evidence. Months later, after a list update, the agent rescreens all buyers and finds no new matches, and records that too.

Where Pryme fits

The Pryme Compliance agent screens customers and counterparties and records refusals. A sanctions or PEP match holds the funds and goes to a person. The Finance agent will not release a payment to an unverified beneficiary. Both are certified by Pryme Intelligence (prymeintelligence.com) before they act. On paying people abroad, see paying overseas contractors from Canada; on records, see audit trails for AI agents.

Questions people ask

Do small businesses in Canada need to screen for sanctions?

The prohibitions apply to everyone in Canada, so any business dealing with foreign customers, suppliers or contractors should screen in proportion to its risk.

Which sanctions list does Canada use?

Global Affairs Canada publishes current measures and the consolidated autonomous sanctions list. UN sanctions are also implemented in Canadian law.

Should a Canadian firm check US sanctions lists?

Often yes, if it deals in US dollars, through US banks or with US parties, because US rules can apply to those transactions.

Can an AI agent clear a sanctions match?

It should not. It can rank near matches and gather evidence; a person decides and the decision is recorded.
