Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cities

Farm produce in Benin City: cassava, plantain and palm oil prices

Where Benin City buys cassava, garri, plantain and palm oil in bulk, how harvest and rainy seasons move prices, and labelled examples for planning.

The short answer

In Benin City, bulk cassava, garri, plantain and palm oil are bought at the big markets such as Oba, New Benin, Uselu and Santana, and directly from farms and processors on the roads out of the city. Prices usually fall after harvest and rise in the lean months and the rainy season, when roads are harder to use. No official daily price list exists for these markets, so the figures here are labelled examples.

Where Benin City buys farm produce in bulk

Edo State is a farming state, and much of what Benin City eats arrives from surrounding local governments and neighbouring states. There are three main ways to buy in bulk.

  • City markets: Oba Market, New Benin, Uselu and Santana carry garri, plantain, palm oil and fresh cassava from wholesalers. See New Benin, Uselu and Santana markets and Oba Market sections.
  • Roadside and farm-gate sellers: along the main roads out of the city, farmers and processors sell plantain bunches, garri bags and palm oil in drums and jerrycans.
  • Processors: garri and palm oil processors in surrounding communities sell to retailers and caterers, often at better prices for regular buyers.

Rubber is also grown in Edo State, but it is an industrial crop bought by processors, not something households buy at market. This guide focuses on food produce.

How the seasons move prices

Prices for farm produce in southern Nigeria follow a broad yearly pattern, though weather, fuel costs and security on farm roads can upset it in any year.

ProduceWhen it tends to be cheaperWhen it tends to be dearerWhy
Cassava and garriDry season, when harvesting and processing are easierPeak rains and lean monthsWet roads raise transport costs; processing slows
PlantainPeak harvest periodsOff-season monthsSupply drops; bunches come from further away
Palm oilMain palm fruit seasonMonths after the main seasonStocks run down; stored oil sells at a premium
Yams (for comparison)After new-yam harvestBefore harvestOld stock runs low

Fuel prices matter as much as the season. When the cost of diesel and petrol rises, the cost of moving produce from farm to city rises with it, and that passes into market prices.

Labelled price examples

These figures are illustrative examples to help you plan a bulk purchase. They are not quotes and will differ by market, quality and month.

Item (example)Example unitExample range
Fresh cassava tubersWheelbarrow load₦8,000 to ₦20,000
White garri50 kg bag₦35,000 to ₦70,000
Yellow garriPaint bucket₦4,000 to ₦7,000
PlantainMedium bunch₦4,000 to ₦12,000
Palm oil25-litre jerrycan₦45,000 to ₦80,000

How to buy in bulk without losing money

  1. Know your storage. Garri keeps for months if dry; plantain ripens in days; palm oil keeps well in a clean, sealed container.
  2. Check quality: garri should be dry and free of sand; palm oil should smell fresh, not rancid; plantain should be firm.
  3. Ask the measure. A "bag" or "bucket" differs between sellers. Agree the measure before the price.
  4. Agree transport before you buy, especially for farm-gate purchases.
  5. Pay by transfer where you can, and keep a record of the amount, date and seller.
  6. Buy from the same sellers regularly; loyal customers often get better prices and honest weights.

Paying farmers and wholesalers

Many wholesalers and some farm-gate sellers now accept bank transfer, which is safer than carrying large sums of cash on farm roads. The CBN Guide to Charges, effective 1 January 2020, set electronic transfer charges at ₦50 for amounts above ₦50,000, so a single transfer for a large order costs little; your bank shows its current charge in the app. Before paying, confirm the account name matches the seller in front of you, and do not pay the full amount for goods to be delivered later unless you know the seller well. A part payment on order and the balance on delivery is a common, fairer arrangement.

Splitting a bulk order

A bulk bag or jerrycan is often too much for one household. Splitting with neighbours, family or colleagues lets each person enjoy the bulk price. Agree beforehand who pays what, who stores the produce and how it will be measured out, and settle the money before the goods arrive.

Selling produce in Benin City

If you are a farmer or processor selling into the city, prices are usually set by wholesalers in the main markets. Building direct relationships with caterers, restaurants and schools can give steadier demand. River basin authorities have also invested in farm water: BusinessDay reported in March 2019 that the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, whose catchment covers Edo, Delta, Ekiti and Ondo, had provided boreholes in communities.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy in bulk for a shop or eatery, a Pryme Business Account keeps purchase records in one place, and the Finance agent can prepare a weekly spend summary for you to approve. For a household, a Savings Box can hold money aside to buy in season. For overall budgeting, see the Benin City cost of living guide.

Questions people ask

Where can I buy garri in bulk in Benin City?

The main markets, including Oba, New Benin, Uselu and Santana, have garri wholesalers. Processors in surrounding communities sell in bags to regular buyers.

How much is a bag of garri in Benin City?

It varies by season and quality. In our labelled example, a 50 kg bag of white garri ranges from ₦35,000 to ₦70,000. Ask several sellers.

When is palm oil cheapest in Edo State?

Usually during the main palm fruit season, when supply is high. Prices tend to rise in the months after as stocks run down.

Why are food prices high in the rainy season?

Wet roads make transport harder and costlier, harvesting and processing slow down, and supply into city markets falls.
