Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cities

Cost of living in Benin City: monthly budget examples

Labelled monthly budgets for a single worker and a family of four in Benin City, how rent and power shape them, and how to compare with Lagos and Warri.

The short answer

There is no official cost-of-living index for Benin City, so the useful answer is a budget built from your own quotes. In our labelled examples, a single worker renting a mini flat spends about ₦275,000 a month and a family of four about ₦650,000, with rent, food and power the largest lines. Against Lagos, the usual saving is in rent and commuting; against Warri, the cities are closer, so compare like-for-like quotes.

Why there is no single number

Neither the National Bureau of Statistics nor the Edo State Government publishes a city-level cost-of-living figure for Benin City that we could find. Prices also move quickly with inflation, fuel and exchange rates. So instead of a headline number, this guide gives two labelled example budgets and a method for building your own. For a sense of scale, the national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month under the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act signed in July 2024.

Example budget 1: single worker

Example only. One adult renting a self-contained mini flat in a mid-priced area, working in the city and eating mostly at home.

Item (example)Per month
Rent (₦900,000 a year, spread monthly)₦75,000
Food and household items₦90,000
Transport (keke, bus, occasional taxi)₦40,000
Electricity tokens and backup fuel₦25,000
Phone and data₦15,000
Personal care, church or mosque, social, savings top-up₦30,000
Total₦275,000

Example budget 2: family of four

Example only. Two adults and two school-age children in a two-bedroom flat, one car shared with keke trips.

Item (example)Per month
Rent (₦1,500,000 a year, spread monthly)₦125,000
Food and household items₦220,000
School fees and levies (termly costs spread monthly)₦80,000
Transport and fuel₦70,000
Electricity, generator or inverter costs₦60,000
Phone, data and TV₦25,000
Health costs and cover₦20,000
Clothing, events and other₦50,000
Total₦650,000

Rent is the line that moves most between neighbourhoods; see rent prices in Benin City by area. School fees vary even more widely; see private school fees in Benin City.

What drives the budget in Benin City

Rent and how it is paid

Landlords often ask for a year in advance, which makes rent a lump sum rather than a monthly bill. Edo's Rent Control and Recovery of Residential Premises Edict 1977 caps advance rent from individual tenants at three months (section 6(6)), but the market frequently departs from it. Plan for the lump sum either way; our guide to Edo's tenancy rules explains the law.

Power

Grid supply comes from BEDC Electricity PLC. How much you spend on tokens versus generator fuel or inverter charging depends on your feeder's hours. Ask neighbours before you move, and see how to buy a BEDC token.

Health

The Edo State Health Insurance Commission runs informal and formal sector plans. Its policy page says enrolment is open to all Edo residents, with co-payments of 10% for covered drugs and lab tests; premiums are not shown on that page, so ask EDOHIC for the current figure.

Comparing with Lagos and Warri

A fair comparison uses the same basket in each city. Price the same size of flat in comparable areas, the same weekly food list, your actual commute and your school choice. Rent and commuting are usually the lines to compare most carefully against Lagos, because they depend on distance and demand. Against Warri, check housing in comparable areas, as local factors such as the neighbourhood and the employer can matter more than the city name.

  1. List your ten biggest monthly costs.
  2. Get two quotes for each in Benin City and in the city you are comparing.
  3. Convert annual costs (rent, school fees) to monthly by dividing by 12.
  4. Compare totals, then compare income: a lower cost of living helps only if pay holds up. See jobs and salaries in Benin City.

Where the savings usually are

  • Buy staples in bulk at the markets. Rice, garri, beans and oil bought in larger quantities at a market usually cost less per kilo than small packs from a kiosk; see which Benin market is for what.
  • Choose housing near work or school. A slightly higher rent can be cheaper overall if it removes two keke trips a day.
  • Size your power backup to your needs. Running a large generator for a phone and a fan is the most expensive way to cover outages.
  • Spread lump sums. Saving rent and school fees monthly avoids borrowing when they fall due.
  • Review data and TV plans. Unused subscriptions are an easy line to cut.

What to check first

  • Rent quotes in two or three neighbourhoods
  • Grid hours on the street you choose
  • School fees, including levies and books
  • Your commute route and its daily fare
  • Health cover options

Where Pryme fits

A budget works best when lump sums are saved for in advance. A naira Savings Box lets you put rent and school fees aside each month, and a Personal Assistant can remind you of bills and prepare transfers that you approve before anything moves.

Questions people ask

How much do I need to live in Benin City per month?

It depends on rent, family size and power. In our labelled examples, a single worker spends about ₦275,000 a month and a family of four about ₦650,000. Build your own budget from current quotes.

Is Benin City cheaper than Lagos?

For many people, yes, mainly in rent and commuting, but there is no official index to confirm by how much. Compare the same basket of costs in both cities.

Is Benin City cheaper than Warri?

The two are often closer than either is to Lagos. Local area, employer and housing matter more than the city name, so compare like-for-like quotes.

How much is rent in Benin City?

It varies widely by area and is usually paid yearly. Our example uses ₦900,000 a year for a mini flat, but get current quotes for the areas you are considering.
