Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Micro Pension Plan: contributing to an RSA from Italy

Who PenCom's Micro Pension Plan is for, why it rarely fits a Nigerian employed in Italy, and the foreign currency RSA route PenCom points to.

The short answer

PenCom's Micro Pension Plan is for Nigerians aged 18 and over who are self-employed or work for an employer with fewer than three employees; it has no minimum contribution and allows withdrawals from three months after the first payment. Its framework and FAQ do not address people living abroad. For Nigerians in Italy, PenCom's September 2025 Guidelines on Foreign Currency Pension Contributions are the route written for the diaspora: US dollars only, paid from a Non-Resident Nigerian Ordinary Account.

Many Nigerians in Italy want a pension at home as well as their INPS record: a pot in Nigeria for the years they may spend there, or a hedge in case they never qualify for much in Italy. The Micro Pension Plan comes up often in that search because it is flexible. Whether it fits depends on how you earn, not where you live.

Who the Micro Pension Plan is for

The Pension Reform Act 2014 applies to public service and to private organisations with three or more employees. Section 2(3) lets employees of organisations with fewer than three staff, and the self-employed, take part under PenCom's guidelines. The Micro Pension Plan is that route. PenCom's FAQ sets out the main features:

  • Nigerians aged 18 and over with a legitimate income, self-employed or with an employer of fewer than three employees.
  • No minimum contribution; you can pay daily, weekly, monthly or at any frequency, in cash, by transfer or through CBN-approved agents.
  • A contingent withdrawal is allowed three months after the first contribution, and then once a week, with the PFA paying within 48 hours.
  • Retirement age is 50, earlier on health grounds; benefits come as programmed withdrawal or a life annuity.
  • One RSA per lifetime; you enrol with any licensed PFA using the RSA opening form and receive a PIN.
  • Investment income is not taxable, and the RSA cannot be used as loan collateral.

The FAQ does not give the percentage split between the contingent and retirement portions, so ask the PFA before you enrol.

Why it rarely fits someone employed in Italy

If you work for an Italian employer, your pension contributions in Italy go to INPS. The Micro Pension Plan is built around Nigerian informal earnings, and neither the 2018 framework nor the FAQ says anything about members who live abroad. It can still make sense in two cases: you already have a micro pension RSA from before you left, or you run a small Nigerian business yourself and earn from it.

Remember the one-RSA rule. If you were ever in formal employment in Nigeria, you probably already have an RSA and a PIN. Find it before opening anything new; our guide to recovering a lost RSA PIN from abroad covers that.

The route PenCom wrote for the diaspora

PenCom's Guidelines on Foreign Currency Pension Contributions (September 2025) are voluntary and name Nigerians living and working abroad as eligible. The main rules:

Currency
US dollars only, into a Foreign Currency Dollar Fund.
How you pay
From a Non-Resident Nigerian Ordinary Account (NRNOA) to your PFA's foreign currency collection account at its custodian, quoting your PIN.
Documents
NIN, international passport, next of kin details; biometrics matched with NIBSS or NIMC, BVN and NIN.
Split
60% contingent, 40% retirement.
Access
Minimum six months before any withdrawal; temporary access at most twice a year; benefits from age 50 or on health grounds, paid in dollars, or naira on request.
Tax in Nigeria
Contributions not taxable; income taxable if withdrawn within five years.

In October 2026 PenCom's Director General pointed Nigerians abroad to this guideline and described a Personal Pension Plan for the self-employed and informal sector through accredited pension agents. The reports gave no opening steps or issue date for that plan, so confirm details with a PFA.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose you send US$200 a month into a foreign currency RSA for a year: US$2,400. Under the 60/40 split, US$1,440 sits in the contingent portion and US$960 in the retirement portion. If you withdraw contingent money within five years, the guideline says the income on it is taxable in Nigeria. Your euro-to-dollar conversion cost comes on top, so check it before each payment.

The Italian angle

Italian tax relief on pension saving is written for Italian supplementary pension forms (see Italian supplementary pension tax relief). Do not assume an RSA contribution is deductible in Italy. An RSA is also a foreign financial asset; ask your commercialista whether and how it belongs in quadro RW. This is information, not tax advice.

What to check first

  1. Do you already have an RSA? Find the PIN before doing anything else.
  2. Do you have Nigerian self-employed income? If not, the foreign currency route is the better fit.
  3. Can you fund an NRNOA in dollars? Ask the PFA which banks it accepts.
  4. Read the PFA's fees and fund statements before you commit.
  5. Name beneficiaries and keep the PIN where your family in Italy or Nigeria can find it.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme holds euros and dollars in one account, so you can keep pension money in dollars and use Swap from euros only when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Paying into an RSA follows your PFA's instructions on which account the money must come from. See multicurrency accounts and our wider explainer on micro pension for Nigerians abroad.

Questions people ask

Can I join the Nigerian micro pension scheme from Italy?

The framework and FAQ do not address people living abroad. The plan is for the self-employed and staff of employers with fewer than three employees; PenCom's foreign currency guidelines are the route written for the diaspora.

Is there a minimum contribution for micro pension?

PenCom's FAQ says there is no minimum and you can pay at any frequency.

Can I pay euros into my RSA?

PenCom's September 2025 guideline allows foreign currency contributions in US dollars only, from a Non-Resident Nigerian Ordinary Account.

When can I withdraw micro pension money?

A contingent withdrawal is allowed three months after the first contribution and then once a week; retirement benefits start at 50, earlier on health grounds.
