Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Asked to send money to Nigeria by someone online: warning signs

Someone you met online wants money sent to Nigeria. The warning signs of romance and friendship scams, the checks to make, and where to report in the UK.

The short answer

If someone you have only met online asks you to send money to Nigeria, or to a UK account for them, treat it as a likely scam until proven otherwise. Common signs are a relationship that moves fast, excuses for never meeting or video-calling, a sudden crisis that needs money, and requests for secrecy, gift cards or crypto. Stop paying, talk to someone you trust, and report it to Report Fraud (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or Police Scotland.

Romance and friendship scams are built over weeks or months. The person is warm, attentive and patient; the request for money comes only once trust is in place, and it usually comes with a story that makes refusing feel cruel. Nigerians in the UK can be targeted from two directions: as people with real family ties to Nigeria, so a request to send money there does not seem odd, and by scammers who claim to be British or American professionals "working in Nigeria".

Warning signs in the relationship

  • It moves very fast. Declarations of love or deep friendship within days, plans for marriage or business before you have met.
  • They never quite appear. The camera is always broken, the connection always bad, the meeting always cancelled at the last moment.
  • Their job explains their absence. Oil rig engineer, army officer on deployment, doctor with an aid agency, contractor on a project in Nigeria.
  • They want to move off the dating app to WhatsApp, Telegram or email early on.
  • The details do not hold together. Photos that look like a model's, a story that changes, a name that does not match the account they ask you to pay.

Warning signs in the request

  • A sudden emergency: hospital bills, a customs fee for a parcel, a stuck inheritance, a fine to leave the country.
  • A request to pay someone else: a "lawyer", "agent", "clearing officer" or relative.
  • A request to pay a UK account in another person's name, or to receive money and send it on. That second request can make you a money mule; read the mule risk.
  • Pressure to keep it secret from your family, friends or bank.
  • Payment by gift card, crypto or an unusual app rather than a normal transfer.
  • A promise to repay you twice over once the problem is solved.

Which?, reporting on money mule recruitment, notes that romance fraudsters may manipulate victims into moving money, for example by asking for account access or transfers to crypto exchanges. The pattern is the same whether the destination is Nigeria or anywhere else.

Checks to make before you send anything

  1. Insist on a live video call. Not a recorded clip, not a voice note. A refusal after weeks of contact is an answer in itself.
  2. Search their photos with a reverse image search. Stolen photos often turn up under other names.
  3. Tell someone you trust the whole story and listen to what they think. Scammers ask for secrecy because outsiders see it clearly.
  4. Check the payee. If you are asked to pay a UK account and Confirmation of Payee says the name does not match, stop.
  5. Talk to your bank. If your bank stops the payment and asks questions, answer truthfully. If the person has coached you on what to say, that is the scam talking. See why UK banks block payments to Nigeria.

If you have already sent money

  • Stop all further payments, whatever new reason you are given.
  • Call your bank on the number on your card straight away.
  • Report it: in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Report Fraud replaced Action Fraud in December 2025 and is at reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040, according to City of London Police. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.
  • Check whether a refund may be possible. Payments made by Faster Payments or CHAPS to a UK account can fall under the UK's APP scam reimbursement rules; international payments do not. Our guide on APP scam refunds and Nigeria explains the difference.
  • Ignore anyone offering to recover your money for a fee.

Where Pryme fits

No app can tell you whether a person is who they say they are. What helps is a pause before money moves: in the Pryme app every transfer shows the recipient, the rate and the fee before you approve, and account security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes. For scams aimed at Nigerians abroad more widely, see money transfer scams targeting the diaspora. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How do I know if someone online asking for money for Nigeria is a scammer?

Red flags include a fast relationship, no live video calls, a sudden emergency, requests to pay a third party or keep it secret, and payment by gift card or crypto. Any one of these is reason to stop.

I sent money to someone I met online in Nigeria. Can I get it back?

Contact your bank at once and report it to Report Fraud or Police Scotland. Payments to UK accounts may be covered by APP reimbursement rules; direct international payments are not.

Where do I report a romance scam in the UK?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, to Police Scotland on 101.

They asked me to receive money and send it to Nigeria. Is that a problem?

Yes. Receiving money and passing it on for someone else can make you a money mule, which the law treats as a crime; banks and police consider whether you were tricked, but the risk is yours.
