Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Renting out your UK home after moving to Nigeria: NRL scheme

Moved back to Nigeria and letting your UK home? How the Non-Resident Landlord scheme takes tax from rent, and how to apply on form NRL1i to be paid gross.

The short answer

Once you live abroad for six months or more a year, HMRC treats you as a non-resident landlord: your letting agent, or your tenant if the rent is over £100 a week and there is no agent, must take basic rate tax off the rent before paying you. You can apply on form NRL1i to receive the rent without deduction and pay any tax through Self Assessment instead, provided your UK tax affairs are up to date.

Many Nigerians who return home keep the UK flat or house they bought while working here. It brings in pounds, it keeps a foothold in the UK, and the mortgage may be easier to service with a tenant in it. The tax side changes the day you leave, though, and the main mechanism is a scheme that surprises people: the Non-Resident Landlord (NRL) scheme.

Who counts as a non-resident landlord

GOV.UK says that if you live abroad for six months or more a year, you are classed as a non-resident landlord, "even if you are a UK resident for tax purposes". The NRL test is about where you usually live, not the Statutory Residence Test, so you can be inside the scheme in a year when you are still UK resident for tax. That often happens in the year you move. Your residence status for the rest of your income is a separate question; see leaving the UK mid-year and split year cases.

How tax is taken from the rent

  • With a letting agent: the agent deducts basic rate tax from the rent, after allowing for expenses it has paid on your behalf, and pays it to HMRC.
  • With no agent: your tenant must deduct the tax if they pay you more than £100 a week in rent.
  • After the tax year: whoever deducted tax gives you a certificate showing how much.

The basic rate of Income Tax is 20% on GOV.UK's current rates page. Example only, with invented figures: rent is £1,250 a month, £15,000 a year. The agent pays £1,800 of fees and £700 of repairs out of the rent during the year. Tax is deducted on £15,000 minus £2,500, which is £12,500, so £2,500 goes to HMRC and you receive the rest after the agent's costs.

Applying to receive rent gross

If you would rather pay tax once a year through Self Assessment, fill in form NRL1i and send it to HMRC. If HMRC approves, it tells your agent or tenant to stop deducting tax. GOV.UK says HMRC "will not approve your application if your taxes are not up to date", for example if returns or payments are late. The page gives no deadline, so apply as soon as you know you are moving; deductions continue until the agent or tenant hears from HMRC.

  1. Bring your UK Self Assessment up to date before you leave.
  2. Complete form NRL1i with your UK tax reference and the agent's or tenant's details.
  3. Send it to HMRC and keep a copy.
  4. Give your agent a copy and ask them to keep deducting until they get HMRC's notice.
  5. Keep records of rent and expenses for the return.

Your return as a non-resident landlord

You must still declare the rental income on a Self Assessment return unless HMRC tells you otherwise. GOV.UK says non-resident landlords "cannot use HMRC's online services" for the return: you post it, use commercial software, or use a professional. You complete the property pages (SA105) and the residence pages (SA109). A paper return has the earlier deadline of 31 October after the tax year. Allowable expenses are the usual ones for any landlord: agent fees, repairs that are not improvements, insurance, ground rent and service charges, among others. Our guide to when you need the SA109 pages covers the residence section.

If tax was deducted but your total UK income is below your Personal Allowance, GOV.UK says you can claim a refund on form R43. That only works if you are entitled to a Personal Allowance as a non-resident; not everyone is, so check before relying on it.

If you have no letting agent

Tenants who pay you directly often do not know about the scheme. If the rent is over £100 a week and HMRC has not approved you for gross payment, the tenant is the one required to deduct the tax and pay it to HMRC. Tell your tenant in writing which applies, and once HMRC approves your NRL1i application, make sure the tenant has HMRC's notice so they stop deducting.

Things people miss

  • Tell your mortgage lender and insurer that the property is now let and you live abroad; consent-to-let and landlord insurance are separate from tax.
  • Nigeria may tax you on the rent once you are resident there. See the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and returning residents.
  • If you sell later, UK rules on gains for non-residents disposing of UK property apply separately.
  • Keep a UK bank account the agent can pay into, or a sterling account that receives UK payments.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account, opened from Nigeria, holds GBP with local UK account details, so your agent can pay rent into pounds and the money stays in pounds until you choose to convert with Swap; the rate and the fee are shown before you approve. A verifiable statement from VerifyDoc.ai receipts can help when an accountant or HMRC asks for proof of rent received. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Do I pay UK tax on rent from my UK house if I live in Nigeria?

Yes, UK rental income stays taxable in the UK. Under the NRL scheme your agent or tenant deducts basic rate tax unless HMRC approves you to receive rent gross.

What is form NRL1i?

It is the form an individual non-resident landlord uses to apply to HMRC to receive rent without tax deducted and pay through Self Assessment instead.

My tenant pays me directly. Do they have to deduct tax?

If there is no letting agent and the rent is more than £100 a week, yes, unless HMRC has approved you for gross payment.

Can I file my return online from Nigeria?

GOV.UK says non-resident landlords cannot use HMRC's online services; you post a paper return, use commercial software, or use a professional.
