Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Can I work remotely for a Nigerian company on a UK visa?

Offered remote work by a Lagos firm while living in the UK? Whether you can depends on your visa: Skilled Worker, Student and dependant rules compared.

The short answer

It depends on your visa. Work you do while physically in the UK counts as working in the UK, even if the employer and the pay are Nigerian. Skilled Worker visa holders can take extra work of up to 20 hours a week only if it meets set conditions; Student visa holders cannot be self-employed and have limited working hours; Skilled Worker partners can work in any job except as a sportsperson or coach. Check the conditions on your eVisa before you accept.

Why location matters more than the employer

A Nigerian company paying you in naira into a Nigerian account does not move the work to Nigeria. If you sit at a desk in Leeds doing it, you are working in the UK, and your UK immigration conditions apply. The same is true for tax: a UK resident working from the UK is generally taxed in the UK on that pay, and the employer's payroll position is a separate question covered in who runs PAYE for a Nigerian employer.

Student dependantGOV.UK family page does not say; check eVisa conditionsGOV.UK Student visa: family members
VisitorSeparate rules; see below

Skilled Worker: the second-job rules

GOV.UK says a Skilled Worker can do up to 20 hours a week in another job, or in their own business, while still doing the sponsored job. The second job must be in a higher-skilled occupation code, on the Immigration Salary List, or in the same occupation and at the same level as the sponsored job. Over 20 hours, the visa needs updating with a new Certificate of Sponsorship. Overtime in the sponsored job itself is unlimited. GOV.UK also notes that working as a sole trader is allowed within these rules, and that admin time counts towards the 20 hours.

So a nurse on a Skilled Worker visa offered evening remote work as a data analyst for a Lagos fintech would need to check whether that role meets one of the occupation tests. Taking it without checking risks breaching a condition of the visa.

Students

GOV.UK says Student visa holders cannot be self-employed, and that the work they can do depends on their course and whether it is term time. Freelancing for Nigerian clients is self-employment wherever the client is; see freelancing on a student visa. An employment offer from a Nigerian company would have to fit within the student's permitted hours and other work conditions.

Partners and dependants

For partners of Skilled Workers, GOV.UK says they can "work, except as a sportsperson or coach", and study, but cannot claim most benefits. That makes remote work for a Nigerian employer generally open to them. For dependants on other routes, the conditions are on their own eVisa. See dependants freelancing for Nigerian clients.

Visitors

If you are in the UK as a visitor, different rules apply, and GOV.UK says visitors cannot work. Whether keeping up with your existing Nigerian job during a visit is allowed is covered separately in working remotely while visiting the UK.

What to check before you accept

  1. Open your eVisa through your UKVI account and read your work conditions. GOV.UK describes the eVisa as the digital record of your status.
  2. If you are a Skilled Worker, check the second job's occupation code against the rules and count the hours, including admin.
  3. If you are a Student, confirm whether the arrangement is employment or self-employment and whether it fits your permitted hours.
  4. Ask how you will be paid and taxed in the UK, including PAYE and National Insurance.
  5. Keep the offer letter or contract, which describes the role and hours.

Immigration points here are information, not advice. For a specific case, use a regulated immigration adviser or solicitor.

Employment or freelance: it changes the answer

A Nigerian company may offer you a "remote role" that is really a freelance contract: no payslip, a monthly invoice from you, and no Nigerian or UK payroll. For immigration, that is self-employment, which a Student visa bars outright and a Skilled Worker must fit inside the second-job rules. A true employment contract raises a different set of questions about payroll. Read the contract and ask the company directly which it is before you sign; the label in the offer email is not decisive.

If your visa changes

Conditions follow the permission you hold today. If you switch from Student to Graduate, or from a partner visa to your own Skilled Worker visa, the work you may do changes on the date the new permission starts. Re-read the new eVisa and check any remote arrangement still fits before carrying on with it.

Where Pryme fits

If the work is allowed and the pay arrives in naira, a Pryme account can receive it into naira account details in your name and keep it separate from your UK salary. You decide when to Swap to pounds, seeing the rate and the fee first, and can send some to family in Nigeria without converting twice.

Questions people ask

Can I work for a Nigerian company while on a UK Skilled Worker visa?

Only within the second-job rules: up to 20 hours a week, in a job that is higher-skilled, on the Immigration Salary List, or the same occupation and level as your sponsored job.

Does remote work for a Nigerian employer count as working in the UK?

Yes, if you do it while physically in the UK. Your UK visa conditions apply whatever country the employer is in.

Can my spouse on a dependant visa work for a Nigerian company?

GOV.UK says Skilled Worker partners can work, except as a sportsperson or coach. Dependants on other routes should check their eVisa.

Can a UK student work remotely for a Nigerian company?

Students cannot be self-employed, and permitted work depends on course and term time. Check your conditions before agreeing.
