Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Remote consulting for Nigerian government agencies from the US

Registration with the BPP database, Tax ID rules, withholding tax and US anti-bribery law: what a US-based consultant should know before bidding.

The short answer

Federal agencies in Nigeria may only contract consultants registered on the Bureau of Public Procurement's national database of contractors, consultants and service providers, and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 makes a Tax ID a condition of contracts with federal and state bodies. Expect payment after formal approval, often with withholding tax deducted, and remember that US anti-bribery law covers every US person.

How Nigerian public-sector consulting usually works

Government work is attractive to diaspora consultants: large programmes in health, education, power and digital government need skills that are scarce at home. The process is more formal than private work. Contracts follow the Public Procurement Act 2007 and the rules of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), approval chains are long, and payment follows documentation, not goodwill.

Registration: the BPP database

A circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (December 2014) states that federal contractors, consultants and service providers must be on the National Database of Federal Contractors, Consultants and Service Providers kept by the BPP, that bidders submit an Interim Registration Report, and that unregistered firms cannot do business with the Federal Government. The BPP website links to the registration portal, labelled "Register as a government contractor", and to a registration procedure document; it also runs the Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO) for procurement plans and records.

The registration is built around Nigerian entities and documents, so a US-based individual often finds it hard to register alone. Common routes are:

  • Working as a named expert inside a Nigerian firm that is already registered and bidding.
  • Registering your own Nigerian company with CAC and then on the BPP database.
  • Subcontracting to a prime contractor on a donor-funded programme, where the funder's own procurement rules may apply instead.

State governments run their own procurement agencies and rules, so check the state body as well if the client is a state ministry.

Tax ID and tax deductions

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 makes a Tax ID a condition for contracts with federal and state ministries, departments, agencies and local governments (section 8(1)(c)), and a body that awards a contract to an unregistered person faces a ₦5,000,000 penalty (section 100(2)). Government payers also deduct withholding tax: the 2024 deduction regulations, as summarised by a Mondaq law firm review, list government ministries and agencies among those who must deduct. PwC's Nigeria table (reviewed May 2026) shows 10% for non-resident companies and individuals on consultancy and professional fees, and treats it as final tax for a non-resident company providing technical, consulting, professional or management services. See Nigerian clients asking for a Tax ID.

Payment norms to plan for

  • Payment usually follows a signed contract, an approved invoice and evidence of delivery such as a report or acceptance certificate.
  • Payments are commonly in naira; a dollar fee should say what rate converts it and on what date.
  • Year-end and budget cycles can delay payments, so build a cash buffer or seek an advance payment backed by whatever guarantee the contract requires.
  • Keep every approval letter and certificate: they are your evidence if a payment stalls.

Delivering remotely

Agency terms of reference often assume a consultant on site. If you plan to deliver most of the work from the US, say so in the technical proposal and show how: scheduled virtual workshops on Lagos or Abuja time, a named local counterpart, and short in-country trips for data collection or validation meetings, priced as separate line items. Agree early how documents move and who in the agency signs off each deliverable, because a report that has not been formally accepted cannot be invoiced. Confirm in writing whether travel costs are reimbursed or must be inside the fee.

US rules that travel with you

The US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act bars paying foreign government officials to obtain or keep business, and the Department of Justice says its anti-bribery provisions apply to all US persons (page updated August 2026). That includes "facilitation" requests dressed as processing fees, and payments routed through an agent or relative. Decline, keep a record, and take advice if pressed.

On US tax, fees from a Nigerian agency are ordinary self-employment or business income for a US tax resident. Nigerian withholding tax deducted may support a foreign tax credit if it is an income tax you owed; keep the receipts. There is no US-Nigeria tax treaty to reduce the Nigerian rate.

Checklist before you bid

  1. Confirm the agency's procurement method and whether you must be on the BPP database.
  2. Decide the contracting entity: you, your US company, or a Nigerian partner.
  3. Sort the Tax ID question before the contract is signed.
  4. Price for withholding tax, currency conversion and payment delay.
  5. Write down your anti-bribery position and share it with any local partner.

Where Pryme fits

Agencies usually pay in naira into a Nigerian account. A Pryme Business Account, opened from abroad, holds NGN alongside USD, and Business Swap converts when you choose, rate and fee shown first. The Finance agent and Compliance agent help keep invoices and certificates in order; a person approves above the ceiling you set. For a Nigerian entity, start with registering a private limited company.

Questions people ask

How do I register as a consultant with the Nigerian government?

Federal work generally needs registration on the BPP National Database of Federal Contractors, Consultants and Service Providers, through the portal linked from bpp.gov.ng.

Can a US-based consultant bid for Nigerian government contracts?

Often through a registered Nigerian firm or your own Nigerian company, because registration is built around Nigerian entities. Donor-funded programmes may follow the funder's rules.

Do Nigerian agencies deduct withholding tax from consultants?

Yes. Government ministries and agencies are among the deductors; PwC shows 10% for non-resident consultants.

Does US anti-bribery law apply to work in Nigeria?

Yes. The FCPA's anti-bribery provisions apply to all US persons, according to the Department of Justice.
