Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What to write in the reference of a transfer to Nigeria

The reference on a transfer to Nigeria helps your records, the recipient's bank and compliance checks. What to write, and what to leave out.

The short answer

Write a short, plain description of what the money is for and who it is from, such as 'School fees Tobi Term 1' or 'Rent support from Ada'. A clear reference helps the recipient spot the credit, helps you and the provider match records, and answers the first question a compliance check would ask. Leave out jokes, codes that could be misread and anything private such as passwords or BVNs.

What the reference field does

Almost every way of sending money to Nigeria, from a bank wire to a remittance app, offers a reference, narration or 'message to recipient' field. It is easy to ignore. It is worth thirty seconds because it travels with the payment and is read by more people than you might expect.

  • The recipient. On the Nigerian side, the narration often appears on the bank alert and statement. Family members who receive several payments a month use it to tell school fees from upkeep.
  • You. When you look back at your own statement in a year, 'Mum Nov medicine' is far more useful than a blank line or a string of letters.
  • The provider's compliance team. Providers in many countries must understand the purpose and intended nature of a transaction. In the UK, for example, the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 (regulation 28) require firms to assess, and where appropriate obtain information on, that purpose, and list the purpose and size of a transaction among the risk factors they weigh.
  • The Nigerian bank. When something goes wrong, staff trace the payment by its details. LemFi's help centre, for instance, explains that for a completed transfer to a Nigerian bank it can supply a session ID that the recipient gives to their bank to find the credit.

A simple formula

A good reference answers two questions in a few words: what is it for, and who or what is it about. Purpose first, then the name or period.

SituationClear referenceAvoid
School feesSchool fees Tobi Term 1Tobi stuff
Monthly family supportFamily support Oct MumMoney
Medical billHospital bill Dad OctEmergency urgent pls
Rent for a relativeRent support Ada 2026Deal
Contribution to a building projectBuilding materials Ikorodu houseInvestment returns

Keep it factual. If the payment is a gift, call it a gift. If it is a loan to a sibling, say so, because the purpose you choose elsewhere in the form should match. The purpose of payment drop-down and the reference should tell the same story.

How references travel on different routes

Where your words end up depends on how the money moves. On a bank wire, the reference sits in the payment message and is visible to your bank, any intermediary banks along the chain and the Nigerian bank that credits the account. On a remittance app, the reference is usually stored by the app and may or may not be passed to the Nigerian bank, depending on how the app pays out. Once the money is inside Nigeria, many providers complete the last step by NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP), the real-time interbank system, which checks the beneficiary's name against the account number before sending and passes a short narration with the credit.

Two practical points follow. First, the recipient may see a different narration from the one you typed, often the provider's name plus a code, so tell them to expect it. Second, the provider's own transaction reference is the one that matters for tracing. Keep it, and give it to the recipient if they need to ask their bank where a payment is.

What to leave out

  • Jokes or slang that could read as something else. 'Ransom', 'drugs money' or 'hush money' written as a joke can trigger a review and a hold.
  • Words that suggest a different activity from the real one, such as 'crypto', 'investment' or 'trade' on a transfer that is family support.
  • Private data: BVNs, NINs, PINs, passwords, card numbers or one-time codes. A reference can be seen by staff at several firms.
  • Long notes. Fields are often short and some systems cut text off, so put the most useful words first.

When a reference is required

Some payments need an exact reference, and then the formula above does not apply. Paying a school, a hospital, a government agency or a developer often requires an invoice number, a student ID or a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR). In those cases type the reference exactly as the payee gave it and keep the invoice, because a wrong character can leave the payment unmatched on their side.

For property and legal payments, a careful reference is part of the paper trail; see property payments to Nigeria: the paper trail.

Keeping records after you send

  1. Save the provider's receipt or confirmation, which shows the amount, rate, fees and reference.
  2. Note the transaction reference the provider gives you; you will need it to trace a payment. See recipient's bank says no money arrived.
  3. Ask the recipient to confirm when the credit shows, ideally with a screenshot of the alert.
  4. File receipts by purpose, so you can show a pattern of family support if a bank ever asks. Transfer receipts for your records covers what to keep.

Where Pryme fits

In the Pryme app you add a note to each payment, and you can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt or statement through our partner VerifyDoc.ai; anyone you share a verifiable one with can check it is genuine and unaltered. When you send money, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

What should I write as reference when sending money to Nigeria?

A short description of the purpose and who it concerns, for example 'School fees Tobi Term 1' or 'Family support Oct Mum'. Purpose first, then the name or period.

Can a wrong reference block my transfer?

A reference alone rarely blocks a payment, but words that suggest something else, such as a joke about crime or the word 'crypto' on a family payment, can prompt a review and delay.

Does the reference show on the recipient's bank alert in Nigeria?

Often it does, as the narration, though it may be shortened. Put the most useful words first.

Should I write my BVN or account details in the reference?

No. Never put BVNs, NINs, PINs, passwords or card numbers in a reference; several firms' staff can see it.
