Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Receiving money from Nigeria on a student visa: proof needed

What an F-1 student should keep when parents send money from Nigeria: sponsor evidence, transfer records, tuition paperwork and the tax forms that apply.

The short answer

An F-1 student should keep a clear paper trail showing that support comes from the sponsor named when the I-20 was issued: the sponsor's letter and bank statements, every Nigerian transfer advice or Swift reference, your US bank statements showing each credit, and school receipts. Consular officers must see funds for the whole course without unauthorised work, and that obligation on the sponsor lasts until you finish and leave, so the records matter at visa renewal, on a change of status and when your bank asks.

Your parents in Enugu pay your fees and send money for rent in Ohio. The US does not ask you to file anything each time money arrives. But several people may later want to see where it came from: a consular officer at your next visa interview, USCIS if you change status, your school's international office, or your bank's compliance team. A folder kept from the first semester makes all of those easy.

Why the records matter

The State Department's guidance to consular officers (9 FAM 402.5) sets the standard. A student must have "sufficient funds to successfully study in the United States without resorting to unauthorized U.S. employment", with readily available funds for the whole first year shown by credible documents, and reliable sources identified for later years. The guidance says sponsor support "is not a mere formality": the sponsor must make sure the student is not forced into unauthorised work, and that commitment runs until the student completes the programme and departs. Officers are also told to check that transfer restrictions in the home country will not stop the money reaching the student.

Your school verified support before issuing the I-20, and the DSO's signature certifies you can pay for the course. Money that keeps arriving from the same sponsor, in a pattern your records explain, is consistent with that picture.

The folder to keep

RecordWhere it comes fromWhy
Each I-20 you are issuedYour schoolShows the funding source and amounts certified
Sponsor letter and bank statementsYour parentsLinks the money to the named sponsor
Transfer advice or Swift reference for every paymentThe Nigerian bank or transfer providerProves source and route
US bank statements showing each creditYour US bankShows receipt and use
Tuition and housing receiptsSchool, landlordShows the money went on study costs
Any scholarship or on-campus job lettersSchoolOther lawful sources of funds

Keep originals or downloads, not screenshots of chats. If your bank asks about a large incoming wire, these are what it wants; see questions US banks ask about wires from Nigeria.

If your sponsor changes

Families change plans: a father retires, an uncle in Abuja takes over the fees. Tell your DSO and ask whether your funding information needs updating, and start a new section of the folder with the new sponsor's letter and statements. A consular officer reviewing a renewal will expect the source of later years' money to come from a specifically identified, reliable source.

How the money can come from Nigeria

Tuition can be paid by your parents' bank through Form A directly to the school. Under the CBN FX Manual effective 1 June 2026, the limit for tuition rose to US$25,000 per semester, and maintenance is billed separately, up to US$5,000 a quarter to the student; banks ask for the admission or enrolment letter, the fee schedule, the student's passport data page and, for returning students, the student ID (Nairametrics, 4 June 2026). Parents can also send from their own domiciliary account, or use a remittance provider. The options are compared in sending money to an F-1 student and paying school fees from Nigeria.

Worked example

Example only: fees are $18,000 a semester and living costs about $1,500 a month. Your parents pay the $18,000 by Form A to the school, within the $25,000 semester limit, and send $4,500 a quarter for living costs, within the $5,000 quarterly maintenance limit. Over a year that is $36,000 + $18,000 = $54,000, with a transfer record for each payment.

Money you must not receive

The records should show support, not earnings. Payment for work you do, including freelance work for Nigerian clients, can be unauthorised employment unless it falls within the work your status allows, such as approved on-campus work or authorised practical training. Read whether an F-1 student can run a business before taking any paid work from home. Asking friends to route their money through your account also muddies the trail.

Tax forms

  • Gifts from family are not income. The IRS says money from friends or family as gifts or reimbursements is not taxable income (IRS, Understanding your Form 1099-K).
  • F-1 students are generally exempt individuals for the substantial presence test for up to five calendar years, so most are nonresident aliens in that period and file Form 8843 to claim the exemption (IRS Publication 519).
  • Form 3520 for gifts over $100,000 from a nonresident applies to US persons, so it usually becomes relevant only once you are a US tax resident (IRS, Gifts from foreign person).

This is information, not tax or immigration advice; your DSO and a tax preparer can confirm your position.

Where Pryme fits

Any Pryme customer can generate a regular or verifiable statement or receipt with VerifyDoc.ai, and anyone can check that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered, which can help when a school or bank wants proof of a transfer. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

What proof do F-1 students need for money from parents?

Keep the sponsor letter and statements, each transfer advice or Swift reference, your US bank statements and school receipts.

Is money from my parents in Nigeria taxable on F-1?

Gifts from family are not taxable income, per the IRS. Most F-1 students in their first five calendar years file Form 8843.

How much can Nigerian parents send for tuition?

Under the 2026 FX Manual, up to US$25,000 per semester via Form A to the school, plus up to US$5,000 a quarter for maintenance, per Nairametrics.

Can I receive money for freelance work from Nigeria on F-1?

Payment for work can be unauthorised employment unless your status allows it. Check with your DSO first.
