Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Can my Nigerian pension be paid into an Australian account?

Nigerian PFAs pay retirement benefits under PenCom rules. What retirees abroad must do in person, the new annual check and how payments reach Australia.

The short answer

PenCom's pages do not say that PFAs pay retirement benefits directly into foreign bank accounts, so plan on benefits being paid into a Nigerian account in your name and sent on from there. Retirees living abroad can start the process online but, per PenCom's 2023 FAQ, must visit a PFA branch to complete verification. From 1 December 2026 retirees on monthly pensions must also confirm they are alive every 12 months.

How PFAs pay retirement benefits

Under the Contributory Pension Scheme, your pension fund administrator (PFA) pays benefits from your Retirement Savings Account (RSA). PenCom's 2023 FAQ describes two ways to take a pension, usually alongside a lump sum:

Programmed withdrawal
The PFA pays monthly or quarterly instalments over your expected lifespan; on death the balance goes to your legal beneficiaries.
Retiree life annuity
You buy an annuity from an approved insurer; if you die within 10 years, beneficiaries receive the remainder. You can move from programmed withdrawal to an annuity after a year, but not the reverse.

The FAQ says a retiree should submit a retirement notice, a pay slip and evidence of accrued rights within six months of retirement. It also says someone relocating abroad can keep contributing or access the account at retirement or at 50. For the background, see how the RSA system works.

Where the money is paid

We found no PenCom page stating that a PFA will pay a programmed withdrawal or lump sum directly into an Australian account. The practical set-up for most retirees abroad is:

  1. Keep an active Nigerian bank account in your name, with BVN and NIN linked.
  2. Give the PFA that account for benefit payments.
  3. Transfer the money to Australia from there, by whatever route your bank supports.
  4. Ask your PFA in writing whether it can pay abroad; if it can, ask for the charges and the exchange rate it uses.

Foreign currency RSAs are different

PenCom's Guidelines on Foreign Currency Pension Contributions (September 2025) let Nigerians living and working abroad contribute in foreign currency. For those accounts, the guidelines provide for benefits to be paid in US dollars, en bloc or by programmed withdrawal, or in naira on request. A dollar benefit paid to a domiciliary account is far easier to move to Australia than naira. The same guidelines say a Nigerian relocating abroad can retain an RSA, subject to updating it with the required documents (NIN, passport, next-of-kin and beneficiary details). See contributing to an RSA from abroad.

What you must do in person, and what you can do remotely

StepFrom Australia?
Start the retirement benefit applicationYes: PenCom's FAQ says retirees abroad can start online enrolment from anywhere
Complete verificationNo: the FAQ says you must visit any branch of your PFA
Annual "I am alive" confirmation (from 1 Dec 2026)The circular allows digital verification: apps, web portal, or video call for those with mobility issues

PenCom's July 2026 circular says all retirees on monthly pensions under the scheme must verify every 12 months, using their RSA PIN and linked phone or email. Miss it, and after a three-month grace period the monthly pension is suspended and the next of kin notified. The circular says PFAs and PenCom never ask for your card PIN and never charge for verification. It does not address retirees abroad specifically, so ask your PFA which digital route works from Australia.

Before you reach retirement: keep the RSA tidy

Benefits are paid to the person whose records match. If your RSA was registered before 1 July 2019, PenCom requires a data recapture; Vanguard reported in March 2026 that PenCom launched an online self-service platform for it on 1 February 2026, using your PFA details, RSA PIN and NIN, with uploads, a live facial image and a digital signature, and an outcome by email within five days of review. That makes it one of the few steps you can finish from Australia. Check too that your name, date of birth and next of kin match across your passport, NIN and RSA.

Australian tax

The ATO lists pensions among the foreign income Australian tax residents must declare, converted to Australian dollars. Temporary residents are treated differently: the ATO says most of their foreign income is not taxed in Australia. Check your status. This is information, not advice.

A worked example

Example only: your PFA pays a programmed withdrawal of ₦300,000 a month into your Nigerian account. Over a year that is ₦3,600,000. Converted for your Australian return at an example average of ₦1,000 per A$1, that is A$3,600 of foreign pension income to declare if you are a resident. Whether and how you move the naira to Australia is a separate decision.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account, opened from Australia, gives you a naira account number in your name, held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, which you can give a PFA for payments and run without branch visits. Your Personal Assistant Agent can remind you before the annual verification falls due. See the Personal Assistant, multicurrency and your RSA while in Australia. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can my PFA pay my pension into an Australian bank account?

PenCom's pages do not say so. Most retirees abroad have benefits paid into a Nigerian account in their name and transfer onward. Ask your PFA in writing.

Do I have to travel to Nigeria to start my pension?

PenCom's 2023 FAQ says retirees abroad can start online but must visit a PFA branch to complete verification.

What is the PenCom I am alive verification?

From 1 December 2026, retirees on monthly pensions verify every 12 months, digitally or at the PFA. Miss it and, after three months' grace, payments are suspended.

Is my Nigerian pension taxed in Australia?

For Australian tax residents, the ATO lists pensions as foreign income to declare. Temporary residents have different rules.
