Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Receipts for Nigerian expenses: what an Italian accountant needs

What an Italian commercialista needs for costs incurred in Nigeria: proper invoices, proof of payment, the exchange rate, translations and contracts.

The short answer

Give your commercialista an invoice or receipt in the supplier's name with its address and tax ID, the date, a description and the amount (showing Nigerian VAT at 7.5% where charged), plus proof of payment and the euro value at the rate for that date. Add the contract or a short note explaining the business purpose. Without that chain, a cost incurred in Nigeria is hard to defend as a business expense in Italy.

Why Nigerian costs need extra care

An Italian company or self-employed person can deduct costs that relate to the business, but must be able to prove them. Costs incurred in Nigeria raise three questions an accountant or the Agenzia delle Entrate may ask: did the cost really happen, was it for the business, and what was it worth in euros? Informal receipts, cash payments and handwritten notes, common for small purchases in Nigeria, answer none of these well.

What a good Nigerian invoice shows

  • Supplier's full name or company name, address and Nigerian tax ID (TIN).
  • Your company's name and address, as the customer.
  • Date and invoice number.
  • A clear description of the goods or services and the quantity.
  • Amount in naira (or the currency agreed), and VAT shown separately where charged. PwC's Nigeria summary, reviewed May 2026, gives the standard VAT rate as 7.5%.
  • Signature or stamp, if the supplier normally uses one.

On Nigerian bank charges, the NRS has said VAT at 7.5% applies only to the service charge or fee, not to the amount transferred, as reported by Daily Trust in January 2026. Keep the fee lines from bank statements: they are a separate small cost.

Proof of payment and the euro value

A receipt alone shows a promise; proof of payment shows the money moved. Keep the bank or app confirmation for each payment, matching amount and date. Then convert: under art. 110 paragraph 2 TUIR, costs in foreign currency are valued by reference to the date they are incurred. Record the rate and its source next to the entry. Our guide on which exchange rate to use explains the options.

Worked example (illustrative rate)

A Lagos printer invoices ₦930,000 for brochures: ₦865,116.28 plus 7.5% VAT of ₦64,883.72 (₦865,116.28 × 1.075 = ₦930,000). You pay on 5 June when, say, €1 = ₦1,750. The cost recorded is ₦930,000 ÷ 1,750 = €531.43. Ask your commercialista how Nigerian VAT should be treated in your Italian books, since it is not Italian VAT and cannot be reclaimed as such.

Business purpose and supporting papers

Italian accountants talk about inerenza: the link between a cost and the business. For Nigerian costs, make that link explicit.

CostSupporting evidence
Services from a Nigerian supplierContract or engagement letter, deliverables, invoice, payment proof
Business travel to NigeriaFlight tickets, hotel invoices, meeting agenda or client correspondence
Local transport and small purchasesReceipts where available; a log with date, purpose and amount
Payments to a contractorContract, invoices, payment proof: see hiring a contractor
Costs paid by a Nigerian subsidiary for youIntercompany agreement and recharge invoice: see transfer pricing

Where a supplier cannot issue a proper invoice, for example a driver or a market trader, write a short internal note the same day: date, amount, what was bought, why, and who was present. It is weaker evidence than an invoice, so keep such costs small and occasional.

Language and form

Nigerian invoices are in English. Many commercialisti read English, but the Agenzia delle Entrate may ask for an Italian translation of documents in a check. For an ordinary set of books a plain translation is usually what accountants prepare when needed; ask yours. Keep originals, whether paper or PDF, and do not edit them: a PDF that has been changed loses its value as evidence.

Income from Nigeria: the other direction

If a Nigerian company pays your Italian business for services, it will usually deduct Nigerian withholding tax and must give you a receipt for the tax deducted, according to PwC's highlights of the 2024 withholding tax regulations, which also note that the vendor gets credit even if the customer did not remit it. Ask every Nigerian client for those receipts and pass them to your accountant.

For larger contracts, a short email from the Italian side commissioning the work, sent before it starts, is often the simplest proof that the cost was for the business and agreed in advance.

Keeping records

Set up one folder per month for Nigerian costs, with each invoice saved next to its payment confirmation and a line in a simple log: date, supplier, description, naira amount, rate, euro amount, business purpose. Send the folder to your commercialista monthly rather than once a year. Italian rules require accounting records and supporting documents to be kept for several years, so ask your accountant for the period that applies to you and keep the Nigerian papers for at least as long.

Where Pryme fits

Paying Nigerian suppliers from a Pryme Business Account gives a dated payment record for each invoice, and any customer can generate a verifiable receipt or statement through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. The Finance agent can match receipts to payments for you to approve.

Questions people ask

Can I deduct expenses paid in Nigeria in Italy?

Costs related to the business can be deducted if documented: invoice, payment proof, euro value at the date, and business purpose.

Does my Italian accountant need Nigerian invoices translated?

Not always for the books, but the Agenzia delle Entrate may ask for a translation in a check. Ask your commercialista.

Can I reclaim Nigerian VAT in Italy?

Nigerian VAT is not Italian VAT; ask your accountant how to treat it in your books.

What exchange rate do I use for a Nigerian receipt?

The rate for the date the cost was incurred, recorded with its source.
