Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Running a Nigerian property agency from abroad: registrations

The CAC, LASRERA and SCUML registrations a property agency needs when the owner lives abroad, and why a qualifying director in Lagos matters.

The short answer

A property agency run from abroad needs three things in place: a CAC-registered company, a LASRERA permit if it deals in Lagos property, and SCUML registration, because real estate is a designated non-financial business under Nigeria's anti-money-laundering rules. LASRERA's corporate route asks for CAC registration, at least one qualifying director and three years' tax clearance, and permits run for a year. Since individual registration expects an office in Lagos, owners abroad usually register through the company with a director on the ground.

The three registrations

RegistrationWhy it appliesKey points
CACThe agency needs a legal identity for contracts, bank accounts and the other two registrationsA limited company is the usual choice for an owner abroad
LASRERA (Lagos)Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Law 2022 requires persons dealing in real estate to registerCorporate applicants: CAC registration, a qualifying director, 3-year tax clearance; permit valid one year, renewable
SCUMLReal estate is on SCUML's list of designated non-financial businessesOnline at scuml.efcc.gov.ng; registration and certificate free; CAC documents and tax ID printout

LASRERA in detail

The Lagos law was signed on 7 February 2022. As analysed by Famsville Solicitors (Mondaq, May 2022), section 26 sets out registration of persons dealing in real estate. An individual must be Nigerian or hold a work permit, be 18 or over, have a LASRRA number and an office in Lagos, hold a school certificate, keep records and a separate client account, and show three years' tax clearance and a CAC business name. A company needs CAC registration, one qualifying director and three years' tax clearance. Permits last one year and are renewable (section 29(3)).

  • Penalties: failure to register is a fine of not less than ₦250,000 for an individual and ₦1,000,000 for a corporate body, with daily penalties on top (section 48).
  • Client money: a separate client account is required (section 26).
  • Public register: LASRERA's website has a 'Search for Agents' tool and a complaints channel.
  • Fees to clients: the Guardian (September 2025) quoted section 26(11) as fixing agency fees at 10% of total rent collected.

Before the 2022 law, Lagos already licensed practitioners under its Estate Agency Regulatory Law; Famsville's 2020 summary of those guidelines listed CAC registration, ID, an operational office address and at least a school certificate as requirements, which is a useful guide to what LASRERA still looks for.

SCUML: the part agencies forget

SCUML, the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering in the EFCC, registers designated non-financial businesses, and real estate is on its list. Its registration guideline asks a limited company for the certificate of incorporation, MEMART, a CAC status report and a tax ID printout, merged into one PDF. Registration and certification are free. After registration, the obligations are ongoing. SCUML's compliance checklist includes:

  • Client payments above ₦5,000,000 (individual) or ₦10,000,000 (corporate) go through financial institutions, not cash.
  • Threshold transactions reported within 7 days.
  • Suspicious transactions reported to the NFIU promptly.
  • Records kept for at least five years.
  • Beneficial ownership information checked through CAC's register.
  • The SCUML certificate displayed and all business lines declared.

Banks commonly ask for the SCUML certificate before opening or upgrading an account for a designated business. Our guide to SCUML registration for diaspora businesses walks through the portal.

Worked example: one letting, two accounts

Example only. A tenant pays ₦3,000,000 for a year's rent on a Lekki flat. If the agency fee is 10% of rent collected, as the Guardian reported section 26(11) of the 2022 law provides, the fee is ₦300,000. The ₦3,000,000 rent belongs to the landlord and should go into the client account, not the agency's operating account; only the ₦300,000 fee moves to the operating account. Guidelines under the earlier Lagos estate agency law, summarised by Famsville in 2020, required money to be remitted to the landlord within 14 days unless the landlord directed otherwise; confirm the current rule with LASRERA.

Mistakes that cause trouble

  • Collecting inspection or form fees from many applicants for the same flat; the earlier guidelines barred taking money from more than one prospective tenant for the same premises.
  • Mixing client money with the agency's own money.
  • Letting the LASRERA permit lapse because nobody in Lagos owns the renewal date.
  • Accepting large cash payments that SCUML expects to go through a bank.
  • Advertising properties without the owner's written instruction.

Structuring it from abroad

  1. Incorporate first, with objects that cover real estate agency and property management.
  2. Appoint a qualifying director in Lagos who meets LASRERA's requirements and runs the office.
  3. Get the company's tax ID and start the tax clearance record; a new company will need to ask LASRERA how it treats the three-year requirement.
  4. Register with SCUML and open the operating and client accounts.
  5. Apply to LASRERA and diarise the annual renewal.
  6. Write the controls: who can receive client money, two-signatory release, and a client ledger reconciled monthly.

For the tenant's side of the same rules, the Nigeria library explains fake house agents in Lagos and LASRERA.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can hold the operating account and give each landlord or development its own virtual account, which makes client-money ledgers easier to keep. The Compliance agent prepares reminders for the LASRERA renewal and SCUML records; you approve what goes out.

Questions people ask

Do I need LASRERA registration to run an estate agency in Lagos?

Yes. The 2022 Lagos law requires persons dealing in real estate to register, with fines of at least ₦1,000,000 for an unregistered company.

Is SCUML registration compulsory for real estate agents?

Real estate is on SCUML's list of designated non-financial businesses. Registration is free and online, and banks often ask for the certificate.

Can I register a property agency in Lagos if I live abroad?

The individual route expects an office in Lagos and a LASRRA number, so owners abroad usually register through a company with a qualifying director in Lagos.

How much can a Lagos agent charge as agency fee?

The Guardian cited section 26(11) of the LASRERA law as fixing agency fees at 10% of total rent collected. Check the current law and any new tenancy legislation.
