Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to read a Nigerian company's annual report before buying

The four statements, the notes worth reading and seven ratios to calculate, with a worked naira example, before buying shares in a listed Nigerian company.

The short answer

Start with the auditor's report, then read the income statement, the statement of financial position (balance sheet) and the cash flow statement, and check the notes on debt, related parties and contingent liabilities. Calculate a few ratios, such as earnings per share, price-to-earnings, dividend cover, debt-to-equity and operating cash flow against profit, and compare them with earlier years and with similar companies.

Where to find the report

Listed Nigerian companies file their audited annual reports and interim results with the Nigerian Exchange, and most also publish them on the investor section of their own websites. NGX keeps corporate disclosures in its document library; the same library carries market bulletins, such as the March 2025 notice confirming FBN Holdings Plc's change of name to First HoldCo Plc. Company sites often hold annual reports, unaudited interim statements, AGM notices and unclaimed dividend lists together; NPF Microfinance Bank Plc's site, for example, lists all of these.

Read at least the last three years. One year can flatter or punish a company; a trend tells you more.

Read in this order

  1. Auditor's report. Is the opinion unqualified ("clean")? A qualified opinion, an emphasis of matter or a note on going concern is a reason to slow down. Look at the key audit matters the auditor chose to highlight.
  2. Income statement. Revenue, cost of sales, operating profit, finance costs, tax and profit after tax. Is revenue growing faster than inflation? Are finance costs eating a growing share of operating profit?
  3. Statement of financial position. What the company owns and owes at the year end: cash, receivables, inventory, loans, payables and equity.
  4. Cash flow statement. Whether profit turned into cash. A company can report profit while cash drains away through rising receivables or inventory.
  5. Notes. Borrowings (currency, rate, maturity), foreign exchange exposure, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities and events after the reporting date.

Seven ratios worth calculating

RatioHow to calculateWhat it tells you
Earnings per share (EPS)Profit after tax ÷ shares in issueProfit attributable to each share
Price-to-earnings (P/E)Share price ÷ EPSHow many years of current profit the price represents
Dividend per share and yieldTotal dividend ÷ shares; dividend per share ÷ priceCash returned per share and as a percentage of the price
Dividend coverEPS ÷ dividend per shareWhether the dividend is paid comfortably out of profit
Debt-to-equityTotal borrowings ÷ shareholders' equityHow heavily the company relies on borrowed money
Operating marginOperating profit ÷ revenueHow much of each naira of sales becomes operating profit
Cash conversionCash from operations ÷ profit after taxWhether reported profit is backed by cash

Banks and insurers need different measures (for banks, for example, capital adequacy and non-performing loans), which their reports state in the notes or a risk management section.

Worked example

Example only. A company reports profit after tax of ₦12 billion, has 4 billion shares in issue, and declares a total dividend of ₦6 billion. Its shares trade at ₦45. Borrowings are ₦30 billion and shareholders' equity is ₦60 billion. Cash from operations was ₦9 billion.

  • EPS = ₦12bn ÷ 4bn = ₦3.00
  • P/E = ₦45 ÷ ₦3.00 = 15
  • Dividend per share = ₦6bn ÷ 4bn = ₦1.50; yield = ₦1.50 ÷ ₦45 = 3.3%
  • Dividend cover = ₦3.00 ÷ ₦1.50 = 2 times
  • Debt-to-equity = ₦30bn ÷ ₦60bn = 0.5
  • Cash conversion = ₦9bn ÷ ₦12bn = 75%

Read together: the dividend is covered twice, debt is moderate, but a quarter of profit did not arrive as cash. The next step is to find out why in the notes: rising receivables, stock build-up or a one-off gain.

Interim results and the chairman's statement

Between annual reports, listed companies publish quarterly or half-year results, usually unaudited. They give a quicker read on trading but can be revised, so check the next audited report against them. NPF Microfinance Bank Plc, for instance, headlined a 7.7% rise in half-year 2026 profit before tax to ₦3.20 billion on its site; the audited full-year report is where you would confirm how that held up.

The chairman's statement and the directors' report are the company's own story. Read them for strategy and plans, then test the claims against the numbers. If the narrative says margins improved but the income statement shows cost of sales rising faster than revenue, trust the statement.

Nigerian points to watch

  • Foreign exchange gains and losses. Naira moves can create large one-off gains or losses. Separate them from operating results.
  • Dollar debt. Check the currency of borrowings in the notes; dollar loans become more expensive in naira when the naira weakens.
  • Inflation. Revenue growth below inflation is a fall in real terms. Headline inflation was 14.63% year on year in September 2026, according to NBS data reported by Voice of Nigeria.
  • Related parties. Large payments to companies linked to directors or the parent deserve a close read.
  • Filing on time. A company that repeatedly files late is giving you information in itself.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer share trading. If you are setting money aside to invest once you have done this homework, a Naira Savings Box keeps it apart from spending money. For context, read how the Nigerian stock exchange works and the risks of buying Nigerian stocks, and use our guide to dividend yield for the yield calculation.

Questions people ask

Where can I download annual reports of Nigerian companies?

From the company's own investor relations page and from NGX's corporate disclosures. Use the audited report, not a summary in the press.

What is a good P/E ratio in Nigeria?

There is no single good figure. Compare a company's P/E with its own history and with similar listed companies, and remember a low P/E can reflect real problems.

What does dividend cover mean?

It is earnings per share divided by dividend per share. Cover of 2 means profit was twice the dividend paid.

Why does cash flow matter if the company made a profit?

Profit is an accounting figure. If cash from operations is persistently below profit, the company may be struggling to collect money or carrying too much stock.
