Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Dividend yield explained with NGX examples

How to work out dividend yield on an NGX share, the difference between trailing and forward yield, and why a high yield can mislead.

The short answer

Dividend yield is the dividend per share divided by the share price, shown as a percentage: a share at ₦40 paying ₦2 a year has a 5% yield. Trailing yield uses dividends already paid over the last year; forward yield uses dividends expected next. On the NGX, where many companies pay an interim and a final dividend, add both before you divide.

Dividend yield is one of the first numbers Nigerian investors look at, because it turns a dividend in naira into a rate you can compare with a savings account or treasury bill. It is useful, but easy to misread. This guide shows the formula, works through labelled examples using NGX-style figures, and explains when a high yield is a warning rather than a bargain.

The formula

Dividend yield = annual dividend per share ÷ current share price × 100

Both numbers must be per share. If a company declares a total dividend in naira, divide it by the number of shares in issue to get the figure per share, or use the per-share amount in the company's announcement.

Example 1: one dividend a year (labelled)

Example only. Company A's share trades at ₦40.00. It paid a final dividend of ₦2.00 per share for its last financial year. Yield = ₦2.00 ÷ ₦40.00 × 100 = 5.0%.

Example 2: interim and final (labelled)

Example only. Many Nigerian banks and consumer companies pay an interim dividend during the year and a final dividend after the year end. Company B pays an interim of ₦0.50 and a final of ₦1.30. Its price is ₦30.00. Annual dividend = ₦0.50 + ₦1.30 = ₦1.80. Yield = ₦1.80 ÷ ₦30.00 × 100 = 6.0%. Using only the final dividend would give 4.3% and understate it.

Trailing versus forward yield

Trailing yieldForward yield
Dividend usedDividends actually paid or declared over the last 12 months or financial yearDividends expected over the next year
CertaintyKnown figureAn estimate or forecast
RiskCan be out of date if profits have changedDepends on the forecast being right
Where you see itMost price sites and broker appsAnalyst research

Example 3: when the two differ (labelled)

Example only. Company C paid ₦3.00 last year and trades at ₦25.00: trailing yield 12.0%. But its half-year results show profit down sharply and an analyst expects a dividend of ₦1.50. Forward yield = ₦1.50 ÷ ₦25.00 × 100 = 6.0%. The 12% headline is based on a dividend that may not be repeated.

Why a high yield can mislead

  • The price has fallen. Yield rises as the price falls. A share that has dropped because of bad news can show a high yield on a dividend it may cut.
  • One-off payments. A special dividend from selling an asset inflates trailing yield for one year.
  • Payout above profit. If a company pays out more than it earns, the dividend may not last. Check the payout ratio: dividend per share ÷ earnings per share.
  • Thin trading. If a share rarely trades, the last price may not be one you can actually buy at.

Read the company's results and dividend history before relying on yield. Our guide to reading an annual report shows where to find earnings per share and the dividend policy.

Yield after tax and charges

Dividends are paid after withholding tax is deducted, so the cash you receive is less than the gross dividend used in the yield. See tax on dividends in Nigeria for the current treatment. Buying the share also carries charges, which reduce your effective yield in the first year.

Example 4: your yield on cost (labelled)

Example only. You buy 1,000 shares of Company A at ₦40.00, paying ₦40,000 plus about 1.86% in charges, roughly ₦40,746 in total (charges as in our ₦100,000 worked example). The ₦2.00 dividend gives ₦2,000 before tax. Your gross yield on what you paid is ₦2,000 ÷ ₦40,746 × 100 = about 4.9%, not 5.0%.

Using yield sensibly

  1. Compare yields within the same sector, where payout habits are similar.
  2. Look at several years of dividends, not one.
  3. Check whether the dividend is covered by earnings.
  4. Remember the price can fall: yield is income, not your total return.
  5. Compare with what you could earn elsewhere at similar risk; see stocks vs treasury bills.

NGX also publishes partner indices focused on dividends; the January 2026 index review reported by Leadership listed an Afrinvest Dividend Yield Index among them, which can give a sense of how high-yield shares as a group have done.

Where to find the figures

The dividend per share is in the company's results announcement and annual report, usually alongside the proposed qualification date and payment date. The current price is on the NGX daily price list and in your broker's app. Work the yield out yourself from those two numbers rather than relying on a figure in a social media post, which may use an old price or leave out the interim dividend. See how to read the NGX daily price list.

Where Pryme fits

Dividends need a bank account in your name on your e-dividend mandate, which can be a Pryme account. You can then move dividend income into a Naira Savings Box if you are not reinvesting it straight away.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate dividend yield in Nigeria?

Divide the annual dividend per share, adding interim and final, by the current share price and multiply by 100.

What is a good dividend yield on the NGX?

There is no single good figure. Compare with similar companies and check that the dividend is covered by earnings and likely to continue.

Is dividend yield the same as return?

No. Yield is dividend income only. Your total return also includes price changes, charges and tax.

What is the difference between trailing and forward dividend yield?

Trailing uses dividends already paid in the past year; forward uses dividends expected next year.
