Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Why Nigerian food shipments get stopped at EU borders

Salmonella in sesame, aflatoxins in nuts and seeds, Sudan dyes and pesticide residues: what EU and UK records show and how importers avoid them.

The short answer

Nigerian food is most often stopped for a small set of hazards: Salmonella in sesame seeds, aflatoxins in groundnuts and melon seeds, Sudan dyes in palm oil and pesticide residues in dried beans. Nigerian sesame is on the EU list for extra border checks at a 50% rate under Regulation 2019/1793 as amended in July 2025, and six RASFF notifications for Salmonella in Nigerian sesame appeared in June 2026 alone, so testing before shipment is the main defence.

RASFF, the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, is how member states tell each other about risky food, including consignments rejected at the border. An importer in Italy whose shipment of Nigerian food fails a test may see it notified on RASFF, destroyed or returned, and face closer checks on later shipments. The hazards that trigger this are predictable, which means most of them are avoidable.

The recurring findings

Salmonella in sesame seeds

This is the clearest pattern. Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1441 of 18 July 2025, amending Regulation 2019/1793, lists sesame seeds from Nigeria in Annex II for Salmonella, with identity and physical checks on 50% of consignments. Annex II covers products that also need special import conditions. Agrolab’s summary of serious RASFF notifications for June 2026 lists Nigerian sesame seeds with Salmonella, marked as six notifications.

Aflatoxins in nuts and seeds

Aflatoxins are moulds that grow in poorly dried or stored crops. CBI, the Dutch export promotion agency, records that RASFF logged more than 900 border rejections for groundnuts between 2021 and 2025, mostly for aflatoxin, and that EU limits for groundnuts for direct consumption are 2.0 µg/kg for aflatoxin B1 and 4.0 µg/kg in total. Its page does not single out Nigeria. The UK’s monitoring plan for 2026/27 lists kuli kuli and suya spice mix from Nigeria, and ogbono and melon seeds, as high priorities for aflatoxin sampling.

Sudan dyes in palm oil

The UK monitoring plan lists palm oil as a high priority for Sudan dyes, particularly from Ivory Coast and Nigeria. The EU list in Regulation 2019/1793 as amended in 2025 covers palm oil from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire for Sudan dyes, not Nigeria; see importing Nigerian palm oil.

Pesticide residues in beans

Under the UK’s retained version of Regulation 2019/1793, as amended from 1 January 2026, dried beans from Nigeria sit in the annex that suspends entry for pesticide residues, and the UK plan lists dried bean flour from Nigeria for pesticide sampling. Check the current EU position for beans before ordering for Italy.

ProductHazardWhat the record shows
Sesame seedsSalmonellaEU Annex II, 50% checks (2025); six RASFF notifications in June 2026
Groundnuts, kuli kuli, suya mixAflatoxinsHigh UK sampling priority for Nigeria; EU groundnut limits 2.0/4.0 µg/kg
Melon seeds (egusi), ogbonoAflatoxinsHigh UK sampling priority
Palm oilSudan dyesHigh UK priority, particularly Nigeria and Ivory Coast
Dried beansPesticide residuesSuspended from entry into GB from Nigeria; check EU position

How importers avoid rejections

  1. Test before shipment, then again on arrival for the first orders. NAFDAC’s 2018 export guideline lists mycotoxin and pesticide residue tests among the checks it applies to food exports; ask for the results with each batch.
  2. Buy from processors that sort, dry and store properly. Aflatoxin is a storage problem as much as a farm problem; ask how goods are dried and stored, and avoid stock that has sat in humid warehouses.
  3. Use the right documents for listed products. Sesame from Nigeria must meet the special import conditions of Annex II, such as the accompanying official certificate. Your broker will know the current form.
  4. Use a single, traceable supplier per product. Mixed lots from several sources are harder to test and harder to defend.
  5. Write rejection into the contract. Agree who pays if a consignment fails, and that the supplier replaces or refunds.

What happens at the border

For listed foods, a consignment is checked at the border control post on entry: documents first, then identity and physical checks at the rate set in the regulation, with samples sent to a laboratory. Goods wait under customs control until results arrive, so build that time into your stock planning. A failure usually ends in rejection, destruction or return at the importer’s cost, and a notification. A spedizioniere doganale experienced with food can tell you what to expect at your port.

A worked example

Example only: a Naples wholesaler imports four containers of Nigerian sesame a year. At a 50% check rate it should expect about two to be held for sampling. If each hold adds a week of storage and the lab fee, it budgets for two of those a year and keeps buffer stock, instead of treating the checks as a surprise.

Where Pryme fits

A contract that splits payment into a deposit and a balance on clean test results keeps leverage with you if a batch fails. Pryme lets a business pay a Nigerian supplier in stages from euros or naira, each time with the rate and fee shown before you approve; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See Business Account.

Questions people ask

Is Nigerian sesame subject to extra EU checks?

Yes. Regulation 2019/1793 as amended in July 2025 lists Nigerian sesame seeds in Annex II for Salmonella, with checks on 50% of consignments.

What is RASFF?

The EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, through which member states share notifications about risky food, including border rejections.

What is the EU aflatoxin limit for groundnuts?

CBI gives 2.0 µg/kg aflatoxin B1 and 4.0 µg/kg total for groundnuts for direct consumption or as an ingredient.

How can I avoid a border rejection of Nigerian food?

Test before shipment, buy from processors that dry and store properly, carry the required certificates and agree rejection terms with the supplier.
