Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Proof of ownership certificate: what it is and how to get it

What the vehicle proof of ownership certificate is, how it differs from the CMR, where it is issued and why it matters at checkpoints.

The short answer

A proof of ownership certificate is the licensing-office record that a vehicle is registered to you (or your company); it is issued when the vehicle is first registered and reissued in the buyer's name on a change of ownership. No national fee is published, so confirm the charge with your state licensing authority, and keep the original with the car because officers at checkpoints compare it with the plate and the vehicle licence.

What the certificate is

Every registered vehicle in Nigeria carries a small set of papers, and the proof of ownership certificate is the one that ties the car to a named person or organisation. The vehicle licence says the car has paid its road tax for the year; insurance says a third party is covered; the proof of ownership says who the registered owner is. Motorists often shorten it to 'POC'.

Licensing offices issue it at first registration, together with the plate number and the first vehicle licence. When the car is sold, a fresh certificate is issued in the buyer's name as part of change of ownership. The exact title printed on the paper and its layout differ from state to state, which is why it is worth knowing what your own state's version looks like before you buy a used car.

POC and CMR: two different things

'CMR' means Central Motor Registry, and readers use it for two separate things. In the FCT, the Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS) runs a Central Motor Registry that manages plate numbers, while FRSC produces the plates themselves, according to a May 2024 report on the directorate's automation. Many motorists also use 'CMR' for a police motor registry certificate. We could not confirm the police's current steps or fee for that certificate from an official page, so ask at your police division or licensing office before you pay anyone who offers to 'process CMR' for you.

Where it is issued

Vehicle registration is run by the states and the FCT, not by one national office. You deal with the motor licensing authority of the state where the vehicle is registered.

  • FCT: the DRTS under the FCT Administration. Since March 2023 it has offered a self-service portal for registering, renewing and selecting plates online, as reported by Gazette Nigeria in May 2024.
  • Lagos: the state's motor vehicle administration agency handles registration and change of ownership. We could not confirm its current fees or office list from an official page; see our Lagos guide for what is known.
  • Other states: the state board of internal revenue or motor licensing office, often at the same desk that sells the vehicle licence. Ask for an official receipt for every payment.

For the full order of first registration, see how to register a new car in Nigeria; for a used car, change of ownership for a used car.

What it costs

We found no published national fee for the certificate itself, and states set their own registration charges. What is published is the plate fee: a Joint Tax Board schedule reported by The Guardian in October 2024 set standard private and commercial plates at a minimum of ₦30,000 from 1 November 2024. The proof of ownership is usually paid for as part of a registration or change-of-ownership bundle, so ask the office to itemise the bundle and show you which line is the certificate.

Why it matters at checkpoints

Officers who stop a vehicle are checking that the car is lawfully registered and that the person driving it has a reason to be in it. The proof of ownership answers the first question, and the name on it should match the name on the vehicle licence and the insurance.

  • FRSC: the 2018 FRSC notice of offence sheet lists a vehicle licence violation at ₦3,000 and 3 penalty points, and using forged or fake documents at ₦20,000 and 10 points. FRSC ordered activation of the penalty point system in February 2025, according to ThisDay.
  • Lagos: under the Transport Sector Reform Law 2018 schedule, an unlicensed or unregistered vehicle attracts ₦20,000 for a first offence and ₦30,000 after that, or three months.
  • Theft checks: FRSC's National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) records plates against vehicles. In July 2025 FRSC in Anambra reported recovering a stolen vehicle during a routine NVIS check, and urged owners to upload their plates to the portal.

If you drive a car registered to someone else, such as a relative or your employer, carry a short signed authorisation from the owner along with copies of the papers. It is not a legal requirement we could source, but it makes a roadside conversation shorter.

Getting one, replacing one

New car

You receive it at first registration. Check the chassis number, engine number, colour and your name before you leave the office.

Used car

The seller hands over their certificate and the licensing office issues a new one in your name during change of ownership. Before paying, check the plate on NVIS at nvis.frsc.gov.ng and, for an imported car, the customs record; see how to check a plate number.

Lost or damaged

Offices commonly ask for a police extract reporting the loss, a sworn affidavit and the other vehicle papers before they reissue. Confirm the list and the reissue fee with your licensing office, because neither is published nationally.

What to check first

  1. The name on the certificate matches your ID or your company's CAC record.
  2. Chassis and engine numbers match the car itself, not just the other papers.
  3. The plate on the certificate matches the plate on the car and on NVIS.
  4. You hold an official receipt for the issuing fee.
  5. Copies are stored somewhere other than the glovebox.

Where Pryme fits

When you buy or sell a car privately, the payment record matters as much as the papers. A Pryme customer can generate a verifiable receipt through our partner VerifyDoc.ai, which the other party can check is genuine and unaltered; see verifiable receipts. If you are still saving for the car, our guide on saving to buy a car may help.

Questions people ask

What is proof of ownership of a vehicle in Nigeria?

It is the certificate issued by your state motor licensing authority showing who the vehicle is registered to. It is issued at first registration and reissued in the buyer's name on change of ownership.

Is POC the same as CMR?

No. POC is the licensing office's ownership certificate. CMR refers to a Central Motor Registry; the FCT DRTS has one for plates, and motorists also use the term for a police motor registry certificate whose current steps we could not confirm officially.

How much is proof of ownership in Nigeria?

No national fee is published. States set registration charges, so ask the licensing office for an itemised official receipt. The JTB schedule set standard plates at a minimum of ₦30,000 from November 2024.

Can I drive without proof of ownership?

Officers can ask for it, and in Lagos an unregistered vehicle attracts a ₦20,000 first-offence penalty under the 2018 law. Carry the original or a certified copy with the other papers.
