Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Prime lending rate in Nigeria: what it means for your loan

What the prime and maximum lending rates the CBN publishes mean, why your loan costs more than prime, and where to see the current figures.

The short answer

The prime lending rate is the average rate Nigerian banks charge their lowest-risk borrowers, usually large companies; the maximum lending rate is the average of the highest rates they charge. The CBN publishes both averages each month on its Money Market Indicators page, which is where to check today’s figures. Most personal and small-business loans are priced well above prime.

Loan offer letters in Nigeria sometimes say your rate is “prime plus” a margin, or that the bank may change your rate in line with its prime lending rate. GTBank’s QuickCredit terms, for example, refer to the bank’s prime lending rate “from time to time” (GTBank, Oct 2026). Understanding what prime means helps you read these clauses and judge whether an offer is reasonable. This page explains the terms; it does not quote a figure, because the published averages change every month.

Prime and maximum lending rates

Prime lending rate
The rate a bank charges its most creditworthy customers. The CBN publishes the industry average.
Maximum lending rate
The rate at the top of a bank’s range, charged to higher-risk borrowers. The CBN also publishes the industry average.
Monetary Policy Rate (MPR)
The CBN’s benchmark rate, set by the Monetary Policy Committee. It influences what banks pay for funds and, over time, what they charge.

Each bank sets its own prime and maximum rates. The CBN figures are averages across banks, so your bank’s own prime rate can be above or below them.

Where to see the current figure

  1. Open the CBN’s Money Market Indicators page (cbn.gov.ng, Rates, Money Market Indicators).
  2. Find the rows for Prime Lending Rate and Maximum Lending Rate. Figures are monthly and are usually a month or more behind.
  3. For the MPR and the latest policy decision, use the CBN’s Monetary Policy Decisions page.
  4. For your own bank’s rate, ask your relationship manager or read the product page and your offer letter.

Why your loan costs more than prime

Prime is the floor, not the price most people pay. A bank adds a margin for risk, the cost of handling small loans, and the security it holds. A personal loan to a salary earner, an unsecured SME loan or a quick digital loan sits much nearer the maximum lending rate, and sometimes above it once fees are counted. Fees such as management and insurance are not part of the headline rate, so compare total cost, not rate alone. Our explainer on APR versus flat fees shows how.

Worked example (illustrative rates)

Suppose a bank’s prime rate is 20% a year and your loan is priced at prime plus 8%, so 28%. On a ₦5,000,000 loan, one year’s simple interest on the full balance is ₦1,400,000. If prime moves up by 2 points and your agreement lets the bank pass that on, your rate becomes 30% and the same year’s interest becomes ₦1,500,000, an extra ₦100,000. These rates are examples, not current figures.

Who actually borrows at prime

Prime is usually reserved for large corporate customers with strong financial statements, big balances with the bank and good security. A salary earner can sometimes get close to it on a loan fully backed by a cash deposit, because the bank’s risk is almost nil. Most other borrowers pay a margin that reflects:

  • Credit risk: your bureau record, income stability and existing debt.
  • Security: unsecured loans cost more than loans backed by cash, property or salary domiciliation.
  • Size and tenor: small loans carry a higher handling cost per naira, and long loans carry more uncertainty.
  • Relationship: some banks give salary account holders a discount; Access Bank, for example, mentions a rate reduction on loans for salary account holders (Access Bank Salary Advance page, Oct 2026).

When you compare offers, the published CBN maximum lending average is a useful check: an offer far above it, once fees are included, deserves a closer look.

How MPR changes reach your loan

When the MPC changes the MPR, banks’ funding costs shift and prime rates tend to follow, though not one for one and often with a delay. At its September 2026 meeting the MPC lowered the MPR and changed the corridor around it (CBN Monetary Policy Decisions page). Whether that reaches your loan depends on its terms:

  • Fixed rate: the rate stays the same for the agreed period whatever happens to prime.
  • Variable or “reviewable” rate: the bank can change your rate, usually after notice. A cut in prime may or may not be passed on; ask.
  • Short loans: 30-day salary loans are priced at drawdown, so a change affects only your next loan.

What to ask your bank

  • Is my rate fixed or variable, and what is it tied to?
  • What is your current prime lending rate, and what margin am I paying above it?
  • How much notice do I get of a change, and can I repay without penalty if it rises?
  • If prime falls, will my rate be reduced, and when?

For the wider picture, see how Nigerian banks set loan interest and our guide to loan offer letter terms.

Questions people ask

What is the prime lending rate in Nigeria now?

The CBN publishes the current average prime lending rate each month on its Money Market Indicators page. Check there for today’s figure, and ask your bank for its own prime rate.

What is the difference between prime and maximum lending rate?

Prime is the average rate banks charge their best customers; maximum is the average of the highest rates they charge riskier borrowers. Most retail loans sit nearer the maximum.

Does MPR affect my loan interest rate?

Indirectly. MPR changes affect banks’ funding costs and prime rates over time. Whether your loan rate changes depends on whether it is fixed or variable.

Why is my bank loan rate higher than the prime rate?

Because prime is reserved for the lowest-risk borrowers. Banks add a margin for risk, size and security, and fees are charged on top.
