Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Buying a prepaid electricity token for family from abroad

How to buy a prepaid meter token for family in Nigeria from abroad: details you need, where to buy, how to confirm it loaded, and fixing tokens that fail.

The short answer

To buy a token for a relative's prepaid meter from abroad you need the meter number, the DisCo that serves the address and an app or site that can pay in naira: the DisCo's own portal, a Nigerian bank app or USSD, or a bill-payment app. Pay, then send your relative the 20-digit token to type into the meter, and ask them to confirm the units shown. If a token is rejected, the usual causes are a wrong meter number, the wrong DisCo, or a meter that still needs the two free key change tokens issued for the November 2024 TID rollover.

Paying for electricity is one of the most common ways people abroad support parents. With a prepaid meter it is simple once you know how: you buy a token code online, your relative types it into the meter, and the units load. Most problems come from a wrong detail or a meter that needs an update. This guide covers the details to collect, where to buy, how to confirm, and what to do if a token will not load.

Details to collect first

  • Meter number, usually printed on the meter or the keypad and on old token receipts. Ask for a photo.
  • The DisCo serving the address (for example Ikeja Electric or Eko in Lagos, AEDC in Abuja, PHED in Port Harcourt). In some states, a state electricity regulator now oversees the market.
  • Prepaid, not postpaid. Postpaid accounts are paid against a bill, not with a token.
  • The name on the meter account, which most payment pages show before you pay. If it does not match, stop and check.
  • A phone number where your relative can receive the token by SMS, if the channel offers it.

Where to buy from abroad

ChannelWhat you needNotes
DisCo website or appMeter number, card or transferSome DisCos, such as Kaduna Electric, offer self-service vending without a login; others need an account
Nigerian bank appA Nigerian accountMost bank apps have an electricity bill option by DisCo
Bank USSDA Nigerian SIM linked to the accountKuda's list gives FCMB's format as *329*3*amount*meter#; other banks have their own codes
Bill-payment or fintech appAn account funded in nairaCheck the app shows the DisCo and the account name before you pay

Whatever you use, confirm the amount, any convenience fee and the name on the meter before you approve. Keep the receipt, which shows the token, the units and the reference.

How many units will the money buy?

Units depend on the tariff band of the feeder serving the address. As an example, NERC's July 2025 supplementary order for Ikeja Electric set non-maximum-demand tariffs at ₦209.50 per kWh for Band A and between ₦31.24 and ₦62.48 per kWh for Bands B to E. Tariff orders are revised, and NERC's site lists newer orders, so check the current order for the DisCo, or the units shown on the receipt, rather than relying on these figures. VAT and any vendor fee also reduce the units.

A worked example

Example: you buy ₦20,000 of electricity for a Band A meter at an illustrative ₦209.50 per kWh before VAT and fees. That buys about 95.5 kWh (20,000 ÷ 209.50). If the house uses about 8 kWh a day, it lasts roughly 12 days. Check the actual units on the receipt.

Loading and confirming the token

  1. Send the 20-digit token to your relative by SMS or WhatsApp, or ask them to read it from the DisCo's SMS.
  2. They type it into the meter or keypad and press enter.
  3. The meter should show an accepted message and the new credit. Ask for a photo of the display.
  4. Compare the units shown with the receipt.
  5. Keep the receipt until the next purchase in case of a dispute.

If the token will not load

  • Wrong meter number or DisCo. Check the receipt; a token for the wrong meter will not load and refunds are slow.
  • The meter needs key change tokens. All STS prepaid meters were affected by a token identifier (TID) rollover on 24 November 2024. AEDC's FAQ explains that a meter that was not updated shows new tokens as "used"; the fix is two free key change tokens (KCTs) entered in order, then the energy token. DisCos publish KCT routes: EKEDC has a portal for meters "unable to load vended token", Ikeja Electric has a KCT check page and a USSD option reported by Techpoint, and PHED has a TID page that generates the token.
  • Keypad not talking to the meter. EKEDC's help centre says a "link error" means the keypad is not communicating with the meter; the DisCo needs to fix it.
  • Tokens out of order. PHED says load recharge tokens in the order they were bought.

If problems persist, contact the DisCo with the meter number, receipt and a photo of the meter display. For more on causes and fixes, see electricity token not loading.

Where Pryme fits

In the Pryme app, electricity is one of the bills you can pay in naira, alongside airtime, data and cable TV. From a Pryme account you can convert with Swap (the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve) and buy the token. A Personal Assistant can prepare a monthly token purchase for you to approve. See also a solar inverter for your parents' home.

Questions people ask

Can I buy a NEPA token for my mum from the UK?

Yes. With the meter number and DisCo, you can pay through the DisCo's portal, a Nigerian bank app or a bill-payment app funded in naira, then send her the 20-digit token.

Why does my token say used or rejected?

Common causes are the wrong meter number, the wrong DisCo, tokens loaded out of order, or a meter that still needs the two free key change tokens from the 2024 TID rollover.

How do I get a KCT for a prepaid meter?

From the DisCo. EKEDC, Ikeja Electric, AEDC and PHED each publish a KCT or TID route on their sites. Enter the KCTs in order, then the energy token.

How many units will ₦20,000 buy?

It depends on the tariff band and current NERC order. The units are shown on the receipt; check the DisCo's current tariff rather than an old figure.
