Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Costing layers vs broilers: a labelled example

A labelled naira example costing a broiler cycle and a year of layers, showing feed’s share of cost, cost per bird and per crate, and cash flow.

The short answer

In the labelled example below, feed is about 68% of the cost of a 500-bird broiler cycle and about 75% of a year of 500 layers, so the feed price and feed conversion decide profit in both. Broilers return cash in weeks but carry price risk at each sale; layers tie up far more money for a year in return for a steady stream of eggs.

Choosing between broilers and layers is less about which is more profitable on paper and more about which suits your cash, your market and your time. The only way to compare them fairly is to cost both with your own prices. This article walks through one example of each, with every figure labelled as an example so you can replace it with quotes from your own suppliers and buyers.

Why feed matters most

In both examples below, feed is by far the largest cost. That is why the two numbers that drive a poultry farm’s profit are the price you pay per bag and how efficiently your birds turn feed into meat or eggs. A small change in either moves the result more than any other line. Food prices in Nigeria have been rising: food inflation was 19.59% year on year in September 2026, according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria. Feed ingredients can follow the same pressures, so recost often.

Example 1: one broiler cycle, 500 birds

All figures are examples.

Cost lineAssumptionAmount (₦)
Day-old chicks500 × ₦900450,000
Feed4 kg per bird = 2,000 kg = 80 bags of 25 kg × ₦18,0001,440,000
Vaccines and drugs₦100 per bird50,000
Litter, heat, powerPer cycle60,000
LabourSix weeks120,000
Total cost2,120,000
  • Feed share: ₦1,440,000 ÷ ₦2,120,000 = about 68%.
  • Mortality 5%: 475 birds to sell. Cost per bird sold: ₦2,120,000 ÷ 475 = about ₦4,463.
  • Sold at ₦6,000 a bird: revenue ₦2,850,000, margin ₦730,000 for the cycle, before your own time and housing costs.

Example 2: one laying year, 500 layers

All figures are examples. Feed is calculated on the full starting flock as a cautious assumption; eggs on an average of 480 birds alive.

Cost lineAssumptionAmount (₦)
Point-of-lay pullets500 × ₦6,5003,250,000
Feed0.12 kg per bird per day × 500 × 365 = 21,900 kg = 876 bags × ₦17,00014,892,000
Vaccines and drugs₦300 per bird150,000
Labour₦80,000 × 12 months960,000
Power, water, trays, otherPer year600,000
Total cost19,852,000
  • Feed share: ₦14,892,000 ÷ ₦19,852,000 = about 75%.
  • Eggs: 480 birds × 75% lay rate × 365 days = 131,400 eggs, or 4,380 crates of 30.
  • Cost per crate: ₦19,852,000 ÷ 4,380 = about ₦4,532.
  • Spent hens sold at the end: 470 × ₦5,000 = ₦2,350,000. Net of that, cost per crate falls to about ₦3,996.
  • Eggs sold at ₦5,500 a crate: ₦24,090,000, plus ₦2,350,000 from spent hens = ₦26,440,000. Margin: ₦6,588,000 for the year, before your time and housing costs.

Comparing the two

PointBroilers (example)Layers (example)
Money in before first saleAbout ₦2.1m over six weeksPullets up front, then feed every month
Cash backAt the end of each cycleWeekly from egg sales
Cycles a yearSeveral, with cleaning breaks betweenOne long laying period
Main riskSale price and timing at market weightLay rate, feed price, egg price over the year
SellingBulk sale at the end of the cycleDaily or weekly; often on credit to retailers

The layer example earns more in total but needs nearly ten times the money of a single broiler cycle and a full year to work through. Broilers can be stopped between cycles if feed or bird prices turn against you. Many farms start with broilers to learn and build cash, then add layers. If you sell eggs on credit, read selling eggs to retailers on credit.

How to use this example

  1. Replace each price with a written quote from your own suppliers: chicks or pullets, feed by bag, vaccines.
  2. Use your own feed conversion and mortality figures from past flocks, or ask your vet or feed supplier for realistic ranges.
  3. Get sale prices from the buyers you will sell to, at the time of year you will sell.
  4. Run a bad case: feed 15% dearer, mortality doubled, sale price 10% lower. If the farm still survives, the plan is sound.
  5. Add your own time and the cost of housing and equipment before deciding the margin is worth it.

Tax notes

Small companies (turnover up to ₦100 million and fixed assets up to ₦250 million) are exempt from company income tax under the 2025 tax law, according to a Mondaq summary. As you grow, capital allowances apply to farm assets: PwC lists agricultural equipment in the 20% class under the new law. Confirm with your adviser.

Where Pryme fits

Pay feed and chick suppliers in one batch with Pryme bulk payouts and bill buyers with invoicing. The Finance agent can prepare a cost-per-crate or cost-per-bird report from your records for a person to review. For rising input costs, see pricing when costs keep rising.

Questions people ask

Which is more profitable, layers or broilers in Nigeria?

It depends on your feed price, bird performance, sale prices and cash. In this article’s labelled example layers earn more in total but need far more money for a year.

What percentage of poultry cost is feed?

In this article’s examples, feed is about 68% of a broiler cycle and 75% of a laying year. Work it out with your own prices.

How much does it cost to raise 500 broilers?

In the example, about ₦2.12 million for one cycle including chicks, feed, drugs, litter and labour. Replace each line with your own quotes.

How many eggs do 500 layers produce in a year?

At an example average of 480 birds and a 75% lay rate, about 131,400 eggs, or 4,380 crates. Your lay rate will differ.
