Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can a POS business pay rent? Monthly earnings worked example

A labelled monthly worked example for a Nigerian POS stand: daily volume to monthly income, less rent, data, fuel and staff, at three volumes.

The short answer

A POS stand can pay its rent if daily volume is steady, but the margin is thin once you add fuel, data and an attendant. In our labelled example, 40 withdrawals a day at ₦120 net each, plus transfers and bills, earn ₦150,800 over 26 days; after ₦94,000 of monthly costs the owner keeps ₦56,800. At 25 withdrawals a day that falls to ₦10,000.

Start from the margin, not the volume

Your monthly result depends on three numbers: how many transactions you do, what you keep on each after the principal's deduction, and your fixed costs. The per-transaction margin is the one most agents guess. On a fintech network you set your charge and the principal deducts a fee: BusinessDay reported in July 2023 that OPay and Moniepoint took ₦60 on a ₦10,000 withdrawal, so a ₦200 charge left ₦140. On UBA Moni, the bank's page lists a fixed ₦59 agent commission per withdrawal. For this example we assume an average net margin of ₦120 per withdrawal across small and large amounts.

Fixed costs are the other half. Rent, staff pay and levies are due whether you serve ten customers or a hundred, so a stand with low volume can lose money even when every single transaction makes a profit. That is why the question 'can it pay rent?' is really a question about how many customers walk up each day. The example below shows the method; the sensitivity table after it shows how fast the answer changes.

The labelled monthly example

Example only. A kiosk at a market entrance with one attendant, open 26 days a month.

Income

LinePer dayPer month (26 days)
40 withdrawals at ₦120 net₦4,800₦124,800
Transfers and bills, net of fees and stamp duty₦1,000₦26,000
Total income₦5,800₦150,800

Monthly costs

CostExample amount
Kiosk rent or space fee₦25,000
Data for the terminal₦4,000
Generator fuel or charging₦15,000
Receipt paper₦5,000
Attendant's pay₦40,000
Market or association levies₦5,000
Total₦94,000

Owner's result: ₦150,800 − ₦94,000 = ₦56,800 for the month. Check: 40 × ₦120 = ₦4,800; plus ₦1,000 is ₦5,800 a day; × 26 = ₦150,800. The costs add to ₦94,000.

Sensitivity to volume

Costs barely move when volume changes, so profit swings hard. Same costs, same margins, different daily withdrawal counts:

Withdrawals a dayMonthly incomeMonthly costsOwner keeps
25₦104,000₦94,000₦10,000
40₦150,800₦94,000₦56,800
60₦213,200₦94,000₦119,200

Check: 25 × ₦120 + ₦1,000 = ₦4,000 a day, × 26 = ₦104,000; 60 × ₦120 + ₦1,000 = ₦8,200 a day, × 26 = ₦213,200. At 60 withdrawals of ₦10,000 the stand pays out ₦600,000 a day, still inside the CBN's ₦1.2 million daily agent cash-out cap.

Costs agents forget

The table above covers the obvious costs. In practice, a month also brings expenses that do not appear every day but still reduce what the owner takes home:

  • Terminal repairs, battery replacement or a replacement charger.
  • Signage and repainting: the CBN guidelines require your principal's name, your charges and complaints numbers to be displayed, and boards wear out.
  • Transport to rebalance float at the bank, which can be daily for a busy stand.
  • Shortfalls from miscounts or disputed transactions that are never recovered.
  • Phone airtime for calling support and customers.
  • Days lost to network outages, illness or public holidays, which cut the 26 trading days.

A sensible habit is to set aside a small amount each week for these, so a broken charger does not come out of float.

Building your own monthly figure

The fastest way to know whether your stand pays rent is to stop estimating. Record each day's transaction counts, net income and costs on a simple sheet, and add the days at month end. After two or three months you will know your real average margin per withdrawal, your quiet and busy weeks, and whether an attendant pays for themselves. Compare your provider's transaction history with your sheet each week; if the numbers drift apart, find out why before the gap grows.

Levers that move the result

  • Run it yourself: dropping the attendant adds ₦40,000 in this example, turning the 25-a-day case into ₦50,000.
  • Share space: a counter inside an existing shop can cut rent sharply.
  • Cut losses: one ₦10,000 fake alert costs more than two days' net income at 25 a day.
  • Price large withdrawals with care: where the deduction is flat above a threshold, bigger withdrawals carry a bigger margin.
  • Watch the season: campus and market stands can be quiet for weeks.

Tax and registration

A stand earning this much is a business, and income tax and registration questions follow. See do POS agents pay tax in Nigeria and how to register a business name with CAC.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not an agent banking principal and does not supply terminals. Once the month's profit is clear, a Pryme account can hold it away from your float, and a Savings Box lets you set rent aside each week rather than finding it all at once.

For the single-day version of this calculation, see POS business daily profit; to pick a spot with enough traffic, where to site a POS stand.

Questions people ask

How much does a POS business make in a month?

It varies widely with volume and costs. In our labelled example, the owner keeps ₦56,800 at 40 withdrawals a day, ₦10,000 at 25 and ₦119,200 at 60, after ₦94,000 of costs.

Can POS business pay shop rent?

Yes, if volume is steady. In our example a ₦25,000 kiosk rent is covered at 25 withdrawals a day, but little is left after staff and fuel.

How many transactions does a POS agent do per day?

It depends on the location. Count foot traffic at your spot on two different days before you commit.

Is it better to run POS myself or hire an attendant?

Running it yourself saves the attendant's pay, ₦40,000 a month in our example, which matters most at low volume.
