Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ponzi victims organising: group petitions and class claims

Lost money in a collapsed scheme with others? How group petitions work, what representative actions can do in Nigerian courts, and the traps to avoid.

The short answer

Victims of a collapsed scheme can file one joint petition, signed by many with a schedule of each person's losses, to the police or EFCC, and report the operator to the SEC, which runs pages for harmed investors and known scams. In court, Nigerian rules allow a representative action where members share the same interest; a 2019 Court of Appeal decision, discussed by Mondaq, explains that this differs from a narrower class action. A group gives investigators a fuller picture, but no route promises recovery.

When a Ponzi scheme collapses, victims usually find each other on WhatsApp or Telegram within days. Organising can help: investigators take a well-documented group complaint more seriously, and shared legal costs make court possible. It can also go wrong, because collapsed schemes attract a second wave of scammers who target the victims. This guide covers what a group can do and how to do it safely.

Step 1: build a victims' schedule

The single most useful thing a group can produce is a schedule: one table listing every victim and their losses, with evidence. A typical schedule has these columns:

ColumnWhat goes in it
Name and phoneAs on the victim's ID
Amount paid inTotal sent to the scheme
Amount received backAny "returns" or withdrawals paid out
Net lossPaid in minus received back
Receiving accountsAccount numbers and banks the money went to
EvidenceStatement pages, receipts, screenshots of the dashboard

Record net loss, not the dashboard balance. A dashboard showing promised profits is not money you lost; what you paid in, minus what came back, is.

Worked example

This is an example. Three victims: Ada paid in ₦600,000 and received ₦150,000 back, a net loss of ₦450,000. Femi paid in ₦1,200,000 and received ₦0, a net loss of ₦1,200,000. Grace paid in ₦300,000 and received ₦340,000, so she is ₦40,000 ahead and has no net loss, though she should still be listed as a witness. The group's total net loss is ₦450,000 plus ₦1,200,000, which is ₦1,650,000. Investigators may later look at people like Grace who received more than they paid.

Step 2: the group petition

A group petition follows the same format as an individual one, with the schedule attached and signatures from each victim, or from a few representatives with written authority from the rest. See how to write a petition to the police for the layout. Many victims also report to the EFCC; see reporting through the EFCC Eagle Eye app and can EFCC or SEC recover Ponzi losses?

Step 3: tell the SEC

The Securities and Exchange Commission's website has a search for registered operators, a list of known investment scams, information for harmed investors and a whistleblowing channel. Check whether the scheme was ever registered, and report it with your schedule. If the operator held itself out as an investment firm, the SEC is the relevant regulator. See complaining to the SEC about an investment firm.

Class actions and representative actions

Nigerian courts distinguish two kinds of group suit. Mondaq's note on the Court of Appeal decision in Olumide Babalola v Apple Inc (6 December 2019) sets out the differences:

Representative action
Can be brought on any cause of action. No leave of court or notice of appointment needed. Members must share the same interest and be ascertainable. The note cites Order 13, rules 12 and 13, of the Lagos Civil Procedure Rules 2012.
Class action
Limited, in the court's description, to matters such as interpreting instruments or statutes, estates, trusts and communal property. The judge appoints the representative, and notice is required.

For Ponzi victims, a representative action is the usual route, where a few named victims sue on behalf of all with the same interest. Its limits are practical: you need defendants with assets that can be found, and if criminal proceedings or asset forfeiture are already under way, recovery may depend on those instead. Take advice from a lawyer before filing.

Running the group well

  • Choose representatives in writing. Two or three people with signed authority from each member avoid disputes later about who speaks for the group.
  • Keep one master copy of the schedule, with a named person responsible for updates, and date every version.
  • Protect members' data. The schedule holds names, phone numbers and account details. Share it only with investigators, regulators and the group's lawyer, not in the open chat.
  • Record every contact with the police, EFCC, SEC and any lawyer: date, name, what was said.
  • Stay factual in public. Accusations against named individuals on social media can expose victims to defamation claims. Leave the allegations to the petition.

Traps to avoid

  • Recovery scams. People who claim they can get your money back for a fee are often scammers. See scam recovery agent scams.
  • Group admins collecting money. If anyone collects "legal fees" or "processing fees", insist on a named lawyer with a written engagement letter, paid to a law firm account.
  • Sharing your BVN or PIN. No legitimate investigator or lawyer needs your PIN or OTP.
  • Promoters as organisers. Upline recruiters may organise groups to steer complaints away from themselves.

To spot the next scheme before it collapses, see Ponzi and investment scams in Nigeria. This is general information, not legal advice.

Questions people ask

Can Ponzi victims sue together in Nigeria?

Yes, usually through a representative action where members share the same interest. A Mondaq note on a 2019 Court of Appeal decision explains the rules.

Is a group petition to EFCC better than an individual one?

A documented group petition with a victims' schedule gives investigators a fuller picture of the scheme and the accounts used. Individual reports still count.

Should I report a Ponzi scheme to the SEC?

Yes, if it claimed to be an investment firm. The SEC website has pages for known scams, harmed investors and whistleblowing.

Someone says they can recover my Ponzi money for a fee. Is it real?

Be very careful. Recovery-fee offers are a common second scam aimed at victims. Use the police, EFCC, SEC or a named lawyer.
