Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

Can PHED disconnect you without notice? The rules

NERC rules give postpaid customers 10 days to pay and at least 2 working days more before cut-off. When PHED can disconnect and what it owes you.

The short answer

Usually not. Under NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023 a postpaid customer has at least 10 days from receiving a bill to pay, and the disconnection date must be at least 2 working days after the payment date, with the notice giving the reconnection team's contact details. PHED can disconnect without notice in narrow cases, such as when it cannot get access to the meter, and a wrongful disconnection must be compensated with energy credits.

The standard timeline for non-payment

NERC replaced its older billing rules with the Customer Protection Regulations, published on 20 April 2023. They apply to every DisCo NERC regulates, including PHED in Rivers and Cross River. For a postpaid customer who has not paid, the sequence is:

  1. Bill delivered. The bill must show an exact payment date. It may come on paper, by email or by text, if you have agreed to electronic bills.
  2. At least 10 days to pay. Regulation 20(2)(b) sets a minimum of 10 days between delivery and the payment date.
  3. At least 2 working days more. Regulation 20(2)(c) says the scheduled disconnection date must be no earlier than 2 working days after the payment date.
  4. Notice with reconnection contacts. The disconnection notice must include the address and phone number of the DisCo's reconnection team (regulation 24(1)(d)).

Put together, a customer who receives a bill on a Monday cannot lawfully be disconnected for that bill for at least 12 days, and longer if weekends or public holidays fall within the 2 working days.

Worked example: counting the days

Example dates only. Bill delivered Monday 2 March; earliest payment date Thursday 12 March (10 days later); 2 working days after that is Monday 16 March, because Saturday and Sunday do not count. The earliest scheduled disconnection date is therefore Monday 16 March.

When PHED can disconnect without notice

The regulations allow disconnection without notice when the DisCo cannot get access to the meter (regulation 21(1)(c)). Lawyers who reviewed the rules point out that no time limit is set for this, and that another clause, regulation 28(2), requires a DisCo that cannot read a meter to leave a notice describing the problem. If you were cut off for "no access", ask PHED for the date of the attempted visit and the notice it left.

Bypass and tampering are dealt with separately; see PHED meter bypass: penalties and reconnection.

When PHED must not disconnect

  • You have a payment arrangement with PHED and are keeping to it.
  • Someone in the home depends on a life-support machine and you have told PHED, with proof, before or when connecting it.
  • Before the notice period has run, as above.

If PHED disconnects you in breach of these protections, NERC's guidelines require it to credit you with energy for each day you were disconnected. Unmetered customers are owed extra notice before disconnection, and must be billed on capped estimates; read the PHED estimated bill cap.

What no longer protects you

Under the old rules some debts were too small to justify disconnection. The 2023 regulations removed several of those shields: a debt smaller than one month's usage, a pending application to a welfare fund, or an unpaid charge that is only a non-energy item such as meter maintenance no longer prevents disconnection on their own.

Disputed bills and disconnection

The most common disconnection argument is not about whether a customer paid, but about whether the bill was right. The published summaries of the rules say DisCos must investigate billing complaints and refund customers who were over-billed, but they do not spell out a freeze on disconnection while a dispute is open. That makes the way you dispute a bill important.

  • Complain before the payment date, not after the cut, and get a reference number.
  • Pay the part of the bill you accept, and say in writing which part you dispute and why.
  • Ask PHED to put the account on a payment arrangement while the investigation runs; an agreed arrangement is one of the protections against disconnection.
  • Keep copies of every message. If PHED disconnects while a dispute is pending, those records support a claim for wrongful disconnection.

Registering life-support equipment

The life-support protection only works if PHED knows. The guidelines put the burden on the customer: tell the DisCo, with proof such as a doctor's letter, before or when you start using the machine. A DisCo is not liable for disconnecting a life-support customer it was never told about. Send the notice by email so you have a dated copy, and ask PHED to confirm that the account has been flagged.

Prepaid customers

A prepaid meter cuts supply when your units run out, which is not a disconnection in the regulatory sense. PHED can, however, physically disconnect a prepaid installation for tampering, safety or other lawful reasons. A meter that stops accepting tokens is a fault to report, not a disconnection; see why a token is not loading.

Steps if you have been cut off

  1. Check the notice: date, reason, amount and the reconnection team's number.
  2. If the bill is wrong, dispute it in writing and ask PHED to hold disconnection while it investigates.
  3. If it is right, pay through an official channel or agree a payment arrangement, then call the reconnection team with the receipt.
  4. If you believe the cut was wrongful, claim the energy credit in writing and escalate if refused. See complaining to PHED and the NERC Forum.

This is information on the published rules, not legal advice. In Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, check whether the state regulator has issued its own rules.

Where Pryme fits

Most disconnections start with a missed date. A Personal Assistant in the Pryme app can remind you before a bill falls due and prepare the electricity payment for you to approve.

Questions people ask

How many days notice must PHED give before disconnecting?

For a postpaid bill, at least 10 days to pay from delivery, then at least 2 working days after the payment date before disconnection.

Can PHED cut my light without notice?

Only in limited cases, such as when it cannot access your meter. Ask for the date of the visit and the notice left.

What happens if PHED disconnects me wrongly?

NERC rules provide compensation in energy credits for each day of wrongful disconnection. Claim it in writing.

Can PHED disconnect me if I have a payment plan?

No, not while you keep to an agreed payment arrangement.
