Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

PHED Band A shortfall: how refunds and downgrades work

Band A promises at least 20 hours a day. What NERC requires when a PHED feeder falls short, and how credits and downgrades reach you.

The short answer

Band A customers are entitled to at least 20 hours of supply a day. When a feeder persistently falls short, NERC orders the DisCo either to compensate affected customers, usually as electricity credit, or to downgrade the feeder to the band it actually receives; PHED was among the DisCos named in NERC's April 2025 order. You do not normally need to apply, but you should log a complaint with dates and hours if your street is missed.

The Band A promise

Since the April 2024 tariff review, Band A has carried a minimum service level of 20 hours of supply a day. Band A customers also pay the highest tariff, which NERC set at N225 per kWh from 1 April 2024 (the figure has been reviewed since; check your PHED receipt for the current rate). Because the price is tied to the hours, NERC treats a shortfall as a breach that must be put right, not as bad luck.

For the band definitions and how to see yours, read NERC electricity bands A to E explained and whether your Port Harcourt street is on a PHED Band A feeder.

What NERC said when the rules were set

In April 2024 NERC's Commissioner for Consumer Affairs said a Band A feeder that fails to deliver at least 20 hours a day for seven consecutive days should be downgraded, and affected customers become eligible for a 50% increase in compensation under NERC regulations. The supplementary order of 4 April 2024 also required each DisCo to:

  • set up rapid response teams, starting with Band A feeders;
  • publish rapid response numbers on its website and send them by bulk SMS;
  • where a Band A feeder misses its service level for two consecutive days, publish an explanation on its website by 10:00 the next day and update customers on when supply will be restored.

How compensation and downgrades work in practice

NERC reviews feeder performance month by month and issues orders naming the feeders that fell short. Its April 2025 tariff order covered inadequate supply on 152 feeders affecting Band A customers on 557 streets across several DisCos, and PHED was one of them. The order split feeders into two groups:

Compensated feeders
The feeder stays in Band A, and customers on it are compensated for the shortfall, as electricity credit or improved supply, under NERC's Order on Migration.
Downgraded feeders
The feeder moves to the band that matches the supply it actually receives, so you pay the lower band's tariff from then on.

The report we read did not give PHED's feeder or street counts, so check NERC's monthly order and PHED's published feeder list for your own feeder name. The credit is applied by the DisCo; you should see it on your postpaid bill or as extra units when you next vend, depending on how PHED implements it.

Worked example: what a credit might look like

This is an illustration only, with round numbers, not a PHED calculation. Suppose a household on a Band A feeder buys about 300 kWh a month and the regulator orders compensation for a shortfall month. If the order were to credit the difference between Band A and a lower band on the energy bought, and the difference were N50 per kWh, the credit would be 300 x N50 = N15,000. The real formula, rates and eligible months are set in each NERC order, so use those, not this example.

Steps if your Band A street is short-supplied

  1. Keep a simple log: date, hours of supply, and outages longer than an hour.
  2. Report each outage to PHED and note the reference number.
  3. Check PHED's website for the published explanation when supply fails two days running.
  4. After the month ends, check NERC's monthly order for your feeder name.
  5. If you were not credited or downgraded when the order says you should be, complain to PHED in writing, then escalate. See complaining to PHED and the NERC Forum.

Why a credit sometimes does not arrive

Most complaints about Band A compensation come down to one of a few gaps between the order and the customer's account. Knowing which one applies tells you what to ask PHED.

  • Your meter is not mapped to the feeder named in the order. PHED's records may place your account on a different feeder or transformer from the one your street actually draws from. Ask PHED to confirm the feeder and band on your account.
  • Your street is not on the listed street schedule. NERC orders list streets as well as feeders. If yours is missing but neighbours on the same line are included, ask PHED to explain in writing.
  • The order is for a different month. Compensation relates to the review month, not the month you read about it; the order covering April 2025 supply was reported in May 2025.
  • You are postpaid and the bill has not caught up. A credit may appear on a later bill rather than the next one; compare the adjustments line on each bill.
  • The feeder was downgraded, not compensated. A downgrade lowers your tariff from then on but is not the same as a credit for the past.

When you write, quote the order, the appendix and the feeder name exactly as NERC prints them. A precise reference gets a precise reply far more often than a general complaint about poor light.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy tokens in the Pryme app, each purchase is recorded with its date and amount, which makes it easier to show what you paid at Band A prices during a shortfall month.

Questions people ask

How many hours should Band A get from PHED?

At least 20 hours a day. NERC said a feeder below that for seven consecutive days should be downgraded.

Will PHED refund me for poor Band A supply?

NERC orders compensation, usually as electricity credit, for feeders it lists as having fallen short; PHED was named in the April 2025 order. Check the order for your feeder.

Do I need to apply for Band A compensation?

The credit is applied by the DisCo for listed feeders, but you should log outages and complain if your feeder is listed and nothing reaches you.

How do I know if my PHED feeder was downgraded?

Check NERC's monthly order appendices and your next receipt or bill, which shows the band and tariff applied.
