Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Personal effects when returning to Nigeria: what is duty-free

Customs treats personal items above a set value as merchandise and charges duty. What has been published, how duty is worked out and what to ask before you pack.

The short answer

Nigeria Customs has said that personal effects in a passenger's baggage should not exceed ₦50,000 in value, and that items above that are treated as "merchandise in baggage" and charged duty (NCS spokesman, October 2019). Clothes and items you have clearly used are treated differently from new goods, but the official passenger concession list was not available on the Customs website when we checked in October 2026, so confirm current rules with Customs before you ship.

The published rule: ₦50,000 and "merchandise in baggage"

The clearest public statement on personal effects came from the Nigeria Customs Service's then spokesman, Joseph Attah, in October 2019. Responding to a traveller who was charged duty at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, he said Customs would "continue to enforce the extant law" that personal effects "shall not exceed the value of N50,000.00", and that anything above that value is treated as merchandise in baggage, which is dutiable. The case involved a designer bag and shoes that Customs valued at ₦570,467.40, with duty of ₦165,692.25 assessed, according to The Guardian's report of 23 October 2019.

Two things follow. First, the ₦50,000 figure was set years ago and has not kept pace with prices, so almost any new branded item can exceed it. Second, the statement was about new goods brought in as gifts or purchases. Worn clothes, used shoes, your own toiletries and the books you were reading are generally what people mean by personal effects, and officers apply judgement to them.

What usually counts as used personal effects

There is no published list we could verify, but the logic officers apply is consistent with the 2019 statement: is this for your own use, is it clearly used, and is the quantity reasonable for one person?

Likely treated as personal effectsLikely treated as dutiable merchandise
Worn clothing and shoes in normal quantitiesSeveral identical new items, still tagged or boxed
Your own used laptop and phoneExtra new phones or laptops beyond personal use
Toiletries and cosmetics already openedCartons of new cosmetics or perfume
Books, photo albums, personal papersGoods that look intended for resale
Used household items moving with you (ask first)New appliances bought for the move

Electronics are the most common point of dispute; see customs duty on laptops and phones in luggage for that case. Furniture and household goods arriving by sea are covered in duty on furniture and household goods.

How duty is worked out when it applies

If Customs decides an item is merchandise, the charge is not a flat fee. DHL's Nigeria guide (25 June 2026) sets out the general structure for imports: duty is charged on the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) at the rate for the item's HS code, converted at the CBN rate on the day of assessment; then a 7% surcharge on the duty, a 0.5% ECOWAS levy on CIF, a 1% CISS levy on FOB value, and 7.5% VAT on the total of CIF plus duty and the other charges. The duty rate for each item is in the Common External Tariff, which Customs publishes on its CET lookup portal.

A worked example

This is an example using DHL's structure, a 20% duty rate and round numbers. Treat the FOB and CIF as equal for a hand-carried item:

Line (example)CalculationAmount
Value of new itemgiven₦600,000
Duty at 20%₦600,000 × 20%₦120,000
Surcharge 7% of duty₦120,000 × 7%₦8,400
ETLS 0.5% of value₦600,000 × 0.5%₦3,000
CISS 1% of value₦600,000 × 1%₦6,000
VAT 7.5% on value plus charges₦737,400 × 7.5%₦55,305
Total charges₦192,705

Check: ₦600,000 + ₦120,000 + ₦8,400 + ₦3,000 + ₦6,000 = ₦737,400; 7.5% of that is ₦55,305; the charges add up to ₦192,705. Real rates depend on the item's HS code, so the actual figure can be very different.

Before you pack: steps

  1. Remove price tags and packaging from things you have bought for yourself and started using; do not disguise goods for resale.
  2. Keep receipts for expensive items. If an item is assessed, the receipt is your best argument on value.
  3. Separate gifts from your own things, and note their value.
  4. If you are shipping a household by sea, you will need documents that a baggage passenger does not: the International Association of Movers' Nigeria guide (September 2026) lists your passport, a letter of introduction, a signed packing list, a Tax Identification Number and a consignment instruction, and says returning citizens need an electronic passport.
  5. If you disagree with an assessment at the airport, ask for the basis in writing and the officer's name; the route is in challenging a customs duty assessment.
  6. Pay duty only through official Customs channels and keep the receipt.

Where Pryme fits

If duty is assessed, you will usually pay in naira. A Pryme account holds USD, GBP and EUR alongside naira, so you can convert only what you need with Swap, seeing the rate and the fee before you approve. Pryme can also generate a verifiable receipt or statement in partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which is useful when you need to show what you paid for something (receipts).

Questions people ask

What is the duty-free allowance for personal effects in Nigeria?

Customs said in 2019 that personal effects should not exceed ₦50,000 in value and that items above that are dutiable as merchandise in baggage. We could not find an updated published schedule in October 2026, so confirm with Customs.

Do I pay customs duty on used clothes when returning to Nigeria?

Worn clothing and used items in normal personal quantities are generally treated as personal effects. New, tagged or bulk items are the ones most often assessed for duty.

How is customs duty calculated on items in my luggage?

Duty is charged on the item's value at its tariff rate, then a 7% surcharge on the duty, ETLS and CISS levies and 7.5% VAT on the total, per DHL's Nigeria guide of June 2026.

What documents do I need to ship household goods back to Nigeria?

A movers' guide from IAM lists the consignee's passport, a letter of introduction, signed packing list, Tax Identification Number and a consignment instruction, and says returning citizens need an e-passport.
