Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying contractors in Nigeria: dollars or naira?

What Nigerian rules say about paying local contractors in foreign currency, and how paying from abroad differs from paying from a Nigerian company.

The short answer

It depends on who pays. A Nigerian company paying a Nigerian contractor for work in Nigeria should generally price and pay in naira: the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as reported, treats the naira as legal tender for domestic transactions between Nigerian entities, with sector exemptions. A company abroad paying a Nigerian contractor is making a cross-border payment, which can be sent in foreign currency, though money through transfer operators is generally paid out in naira.

Nigerian contractors, especially developers, designers and writers, often ask to be paid in dollars to protect themselves from naira swings. Whether you can agree depends less on preference than on who is paying, from where and how. This guide separates the domestic and cross-border cases and sets out the practical options. It is information, not legal advice.

Case 1: a Nigerian company paying a Nigerian contractor

TheCable's June 2026 summary of the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 says the naira is "the legal tender for transactions conducted within Nigeria" and that domestic transactions between Nigerian entities are priced and settled in naira. It lists exemptions for certain government agencies, licensed oil and gas, maritime and aviation businesses, and free trade zone businesses.

Templars' May 2025 note on pricing in foreign currency explains the background: section 20(5) of the CBN Act makes refusing the naira as a means of payment an offence, with a proviso letting the CBN prescribe when other currencies may be used, and a CBN circular on currency substitution purported to bar foreign-currency pricing. Templars' view at the time was that no statute criminalised pricing in foreign currency so long as naira was not refused. The 2026 Manual, as reported, now states the naira rule directly, so a Nigerian company should assume contractor fees for work in Nigeria are agreed and paid in naira unless it falls in an exemption.

Protecting the contractor without paying dollars

  • Index the naira fee to a published exchange rate on the invoice date, with the rate source named in the contract.
  • Review the rate monthly or quarterly rather than annually.
  • Pay promptly, since the contractor bears the rate risk while an invoice is open.
  • Agree milestone payments on longer projects, so less of the fee is exposed to a single month's rate.
  • Put the agreed currency, rate source and payment terms in the written contract, not in chat messages.

Get advice before relying on an indexation clause, because how the 2026 Manual treats naira prices linked to a dollar rate was not addressed in the sources we read.

Case 2: a company abroad paying a Nigerian contractor

If your UK, US or Canadian company contracts directly with a Nigerian freelancer, the payment is a cross-border transfer, and you can generally agree the fee in your own currency. How the contractor receives it is the practical question:

RouteWhat the contractor receivesPoints to check
Transfer operator (IMTO) to a Nigerian accountNaira, under the FX Manual as reportedOver-the-counter cash capped at the naira equivalent of $200; the rest credited to a bank account
Bank wire to the contractor's domiciliary accountForeign currency, if the receiving bank credits it as suchAsk the bank how it credits inbound wires; dom holders may send onward transfers of up to $10,000 a day
Payment platform or contractor's account abroadDepends on the platformFees, payout currency and the platform's own terms

Pavestones' June 2026 note on the Manual also says inbound foreign-currency transfers are paid in naira or a currency the CBN specifies, with cash withdrawals on them capped at the naira equivalent of $200. Ask the contractor which route they use and what they actually receive before agreeing the currency in the contract.

The contractor's tax

A contractor who is tax-resident in Nigeria is taxed on worldwide income. PwC's May 2026 summary of residence lists the tests, including 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, a permanent home or substantial economic or family ties. Paying in dollars does not change that; the contractor declares the income. Note that a large Nigerian team delivering services in Nigeria could also raise questions about your company's own tax position; see staff creating a taxable presence.

Choosing a structure

  1. Decide which entity contracts: your company abroad or your Nigerian company.
  2. If the Nigerian company contracts for work in Nigeria, agree the fee in naira and consider a rate-review clause.
  3. If the company abroad contracts, agree the currency and the payout route with the contractor.
  4. Keep a written contract, invoices and payment receipts for every payment.
  5. Review classification at least yearly; long-running full-time contractors may be employees.

For supplier payments generally, see paying a Nigerian supplier in naira or dollars and paying staff in Nigeria from a company abroad.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, so a Nigerian company can pay contractors in naira while holding foreign-currency revenue. Swap converts when you choose, with the rate shown first and the fee on its own line. Bulk payouts pay many contractors at once. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian company pay a contractor in dollars?

For work in Nigeria between Nigerian parties, the 2026 FX Manual, as reported, requires naira pricing and settlement, with exemptions for sectors such as oil and gas, aviation, maritime and free zones.

Can my company abroad pay a Nigerian freelancer in dollars?

You can generally agree the fee in your currency, but money through transfer operators is paid out in naira. A wire to a domiciliary account is the usual way to keep dollars; ask the bank how it credits it.

Is pricing in dollars illegal in Nigeria?

Refusing the naira is an offence under s.20(5) of the CBN Act, and the 2026 Manual states domestic deals are priced and settled in naira. Take advice before pricing domestic work in dollars.

Does a Nigerian contractor pay tax on dollar income?

Yes, if tax-resident in Nigeria: residents are taxed on worldwide income regardless of currency.
