Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Paying a Nigerian bank in naira from a Canadian bank wire

Can a Canadian bank wire land as naira in a Nigerian account? What usually happens, how the Nigerian bank converts USD inflows, and the cheaper routes.

The short answer

A Canadian bank wire can end up as naira in a Nigerian account, but in most cases the wire travels in US dollars and the Nigerian bank converts it on arrival at its own rate. Few Canadian banks offer naira as a wire currency, so ask yours first. If the goal is naira in a naira account, a regulated transfer service that pays naira directly usually involves one conversion instead of two.

Can any Canadian bank wire deliver naira directly?

The honest position is that you have to ask your own bank. Canadian banks publish lists of currencies they can wire, and the naira is not a currency they commonly trade. Our checks of Canadian banks' own pages in October 2026 did not find one that confirmed a naira wire to Nigeria, and several bank pages would not load, so we cannot tell you which, if any, offers it. What is clear from the way Swift payments settle is that the wire needs a currency both ends hold, and for Nigeria that is usually the US dollar.

If your bank's online form lets you pick NGN, check what the confirmation says: the currency debited, the currency sent, and the rate used. If the confirmation shows USD as the sent currency, the naira figure you were shown, if any, was an estimate.

How the Nigerian bank converts a USD inflow

When dollars arrive for a naira account, the receiving Nigerian bank converts them at its own buying rate on the day it processes the payment. That rate is the bank's own and is not known to you in Canada when you send, which is the main reason a wire into a naira account is hard to plan around.

  • Rate risk: the naira can move between the day you send and the day the bank converts.
  • Two margins: your bank's CAD to USD margin, then the Nigerian bank's USD to naira margin.
  • Possible holds: a foreign-currency payment arriving at a naira account may be queried or returned. The receiver should ask their bank in advance.
  • Charges: an intermediary bank may deduct a fee from the USD before it arrives.

Worked example (illustrative figures only)

Example: you need ₦1,500,000 in a landlord's naira account. You wire USD from Canada. If the Nigerian bank's buying rate on the day were ₦1,450 per dollar, the landlord would need USD 1,034.48 to arrive, after any intermediary deduction. If the rate turned out to be ₦1,420, the same USD 1,034.48 would give ₦1,468,962, which is ₦31,038 short. Neither rate is a real or current figure; the point is that you carry the rate risk when the conversion happens in Nigeria.

When a USD wire is the right tool

A dollar wire is still the natural choice when the receiver wants dollars: tuition abroad, imported goods, or savings kept in dollars. Reports of the CBN's 2026 FX Manual say holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts may transfer up to USD 10,000 a day without Form A. Cash withdrawal from inbound transfer proceeds is capped at the naira equivalent of $200, so plan on spending by transfer.

Routes that land naira in one step

Licensed money transfer operators pay Nigerian receivers in naira. The CBN's IMTO guidelines of January 2024 require payment to customers only in naira, and a CBN circular of 24 March 2026, effective 1 May 2026, says payouts run through naira settlement accounts at authorised dealer banks. Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page, for example, shows NGN as the payout currency for bank deposits. With these services you see the naira amount the receiver gets before you pay.

GoalUsual routeConversions
Naira into a naira accountRemittance app paying NGNOne (CAD to NGN)
Dollars into a domiciliary accountBank wire in USDOne (CAD to USD)
Naira via a bank wireUSD wire, converted in NigeriaTwo (CAD to USD, USD to NGN)

Steps if you must use a bank wire for naira

  1. Ask the receiver's bank whether it accepts a USD wire into the naira account and at what point it converts.
  2. Ask your Canadian bank which currency it will send and whether it can show the USD amount first.
  3. Send a little extra, or agree with the receiver who covers a shortfall.
  4. Keep the confirmation and its UETR; see reading a Swift confirmation.
  5. Compare the naira received per CAD with an app quote; see the FX margin on CAD to naira.

For the other side of the choice, see why Canadian banks wire USD, not naira.

Paying an institution that only accepts naira

Landlords, schools, hospitals and government bodies in Nigeria usually bill in naira and expect naira in a naira account. If you wire dollars to such an account, the institution receives whatever its bank's conversion produces, which may not match the invoice. Two habits help. First, ask the institution whether it has a domiciliary account and will accept the dollar equivalent; some will, many will not. Second, if it must be naira, pay through a route that shows you the naira amount before you pay, and send the receipt to the institution with the invoice number so it can match the payment.

If a shortfall does happen, the institution will normally ask for the balance rather than refund the payment, so send a small top-up rather than a second full payment.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds NGN and USD with local details for each, so dollars can arrive as dollars and be converted with Swap when the receiver decides, with the rate shown first and the fee on its own line. When you send, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Does my Canadian bank convert to naira?

Usually not. Most Canadian bank wires to Nigeria are built in US dollars and converted by the Nigerian bank. Ask your bank which currencies it offers for Nigeria.

What rate does a Nigerian bank use for my USD wire?

Its own buying rate on the day it processes the payment. You will not know it when you send, so the naira amount is uncertain until it lands.

Is an app cheaper than a bank wire for naira?

It often involves one conversion instead of two, but the only reliable test is naira received per CAD paid, after all fees, on the day you send.

Can my landlord receive dollars instead?

Only if they have a domiciliary account. Many Nigerian landlords and schools expect naira, so confirm before you send.
