Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Paying electricity tokens for family in Nigeria from the US

How to buy a prepaid token for a family meter in Nigeria from the US: the details you need, where to buy, what a token buys and what to do if it fails.

The short answer

You can buy a prepaid electricity token from the US with only the family's meter number, the DisCo and the amount: pay through the DisCo's own app or website or an accredited vending channel, check the customer name it shows, and send the 20-digit token to the family to type into the meter. As at the July 2025 NERC orders, Band A customers pay ₦209.50 per kWh, so a ₦20,000 token buys roughly 95 kWh before any deductions.

What you need before you pay

  • The meter number, printed on the meter or on an earlier token receipt. Ask the family for a photo of the meter face.
  • The distribution company (DisCo): for example Eko or Ikeja in Lagos, AEDC in Abuja, PHED in Port Harcourt. Buying through the wrong DisCo fails.
  • Prepaid or postpaid: a postpaid account is paid against a bill and account number, not a token.
  • The family's phone number or email, so the token can be sent straight to them.

Before paying, every proper vending channel shows the customer name and address registered to the meter. If the name is not the one you expect, stop: the meter number is wrong, or the property's account is in a landlord's or previous occupant's name, which is common and fine if your family confirms it.

Where to buy from the US

Each DisCo lists its own channels. EKEDC's payment-channels page, for example, shows Buy Power, Baxi, Quickteller, Paga, PalmPay, Remita and others. AEDC launched its MyPower app and web app in October 2026 to buy tokens, pay bills, report outages and manage several meters, which suits someone paying for more than one household. The Nigeria library lists each DisCo's codes and channels, starting with how prepaid electricity tokens work.

Paying from the US usually means one of three routes:

  1. Pay a vending site or app with a card it accepts. Some Nigerian vending sites take only Nigerian cards or bank transfers.
  2. Hold naira in an account you control and pay the DisCo's channel by transfer or in-app.
  3. Send naira to a relative who buys the token locally. Simple, but you lose sight of the purchase.

What a token buys

Under NERC's July 2025 supplementary orders, which remain in force until replaced, Band A customers of Ikeja Electric and AEDC pay ₦209.50 per kWh (as at the orders effective 1 July 2025), with lower bands (B to E) frozen at December 2022 rates, for example ₦62.48 for Ikeja Electric's Band B non-MD customers. Band A feeders are meant to supply at least 20 hours a day. Check your family's band with the DisCo, since it changes what each naira buys, and check whether a newer tariff order has been published.

A worked example

Example only. Your parents in Ikeja are Band A. You buy a ₦20,000 token.

  • ₦20,000 ÷ ₦209.50 = about 95.5 kWh, before any VAT or debt deduction the vend applies.
  • If they use 8 kWh a day (fridge, fans, lights, TV, some ironing), that lasts about 12 days.
  • In Band B at ₦62.48, the same ₦20,000 buys about 320 kWh.

The token receipt shows the units credited. If they are well below the example arithmetic, ask the DisCo whether a debt from a previous occupant is being recovered from each vend.

Setting a routine from abroad

Ad hoc top-ups tend to happen at night in Nigeria, when the meter beeps and the family calls. A routine works better. Agree a fixed amount and a day, for example the first and fifteenth of the month, and buy then. Ask the family to send a photo of the meter balance once a week, so you can see how fast units go and adjust before they run out. Large jumps in use often mean a new appliance, a faulty one, or a neighbour connected to the meter, all worth asking about.

If the household uses a generator during outages, the token budget and the fuel budget move against each other: a month of poor supply means fewer units used and more fuel bought. Look at both together.

When the token does not load

  • Wrong digits: the family re-enters all 20 digits slowly; most rejections are typing errors.
  • Old meter keys: STS meters had to be updated for the November 2024 TID rollover. AEDC's FAQ says an un-updated meter shows tokens as "used" and needs two free key change tokens entered in order, then the energy token.
  • Token not received: retrieve it from the vending channel's history using the meter number; do not buy again.
  • Still failing: contact the DisCo. NERC's metering factsheet (13 October 2026) sets the escalation: DisCo first, then the NERC Forum Office, then NERC on appeal (or the state regulator where one has taken over).

Our guide on keeping a record of money sent to family helps if electricity is one of several regular payments.

Where Pryme fits

With naira in a Pryme account you can pay electricity tokens for a family meter in Nigeria from the app, alongside airtime, data and cable TV. Converting dollars when you choose with Swap keeps the naira ready; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Your Personal Assistant can remind you when it is usually time to top up and prepare the purchase for your approval. See how the account works.

Questions people ask

Can I buy NEPA light token for my mum in Nigeria from America?

Yes. With her meter number and DisCo, pay through the DisCo's app or website or an accredited vending channel, check the customer name shown, and send her the 20-digit token.

How many units will ₦20,000 give in Band A?

At ₦209.50 per kWh, the Band A rate in NERC's July 2025 orders, about 95 kWh before any VAT or debt deduction. Lower bands get more units for the same money.

Why does the meter say token used?

If the meter missed the November 2024 TID update, AEDC says it needs two key change tokens entered in order before the energy token. Ask the DisCo for them; AEDC says they are free.

Can I manage several family meters from abroad?

Several DisCo apps let you save more than one meter; AEDC's MyPower app, launched in October 2026, lists multiple meters among its features.
