Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Paying a Nigerian electricity token from the UK

Buying prepaid electricity for parents in Nigeria from abroad: the meter details you need, DisCo portals and apps, and what to do if a token will not load.

The short answer

You need the meter number and the name of the distribution company (DisCo). Most DisCos sell tokens online: PHED Pay, for example, takes Visa, Mastercard and Verve cards from ₦100 and shows the token on the receipt, and Kaduna Electric says its 20-digit token is sent by SMS and email. You then send the token to your parents, who type it into the meter.

What you need before you pay

  • The meter number, printed on the meter or on an old token receipt. Ask your parents to photograph the meter label.
  • The DisCo that supplies the house, such as Ikeja Electric or Eko (EKEDC) in Lagos, AEDC in Abuja, PHED in Port Harcourt or Kaduna Electric in the north-west. It is on old receipts and bills.
  • A phone number or email where the token can be sent, ideally your parents' as well as your own.
  • A way to pay: a card the portal accepts, or a naira account with a bills menu.

Where to buy: DisCo channels

Each DisCo runs its own portal or app, and banks and payment apps also sell tokens. These are what the DisCos' own pages and recent reports describe:

DisCoOnline channelWhat its page or report says
PHED (Port Harcourt)PHED Pay, payments.phed.com.ngCard (Visa, Mastercard, Verve), transfer, USSD; minimum ₦100; token on the receipt; contact support with the reference if not received in 5 minutes; Retrieve Token option
Kaduna Electrickadelectric.ng self-service, KadElectric appNo login needed for self-service; 20-digit STS token by SMS and email "within 30 seconds"
Eko (EKEDC)Eko Power AppTokens, bills and bulk payments in the app
AEDC (Abuja)MyPower app and webBuy tokens, pay bills, report outages and manage several meters (Blueprint, 8 Oct 2026)

Whether a portal accepts a card issued in the UK depends on the payment processor behind it, and the pages do not say. Try a small amount first; if a UK card is declined, use a naira account instead. Card payments from the UK may also attract a foreign transaction fee from your own bank.

Step by step

  1. Open the DisCo's portal or app, or the bills menu of a naira account you can use from the UK.
  2. Choose prepaid, enter the meter number and check the name and address that come back.
  3. Enter the amount in naira and pay.
  4. Copy the 20-digit token from the receipt, SMS or email.
  5. Send it to your parents in a text message, and keep the receipt with its reference.
  6. Ask them to confirm the meter accepted it and the units shown.

If the token will not load

AEDC's TID FAQ explains that the token identifier rollover took effect on 24 November 2024 for all STS meters, and that a meter not updated shows new tokens as "used". The fix is two key change tokens (KCTs), entered in order, then the energy token. AEDC says KCTs are free and that its meter check is at map.abujaelectricity.com/checkmeter; other DisCos run their own KCT or TID pages.

Other common causes are a typo when entering the token, the wrong meter number, or a keypad not communicating with the meter. The Nigeria library covers these in detail in electricity token not loading and explains the basics in how prepaid tokens work.

If you paid but no token arrived

  • Look for a Retrieve Token or token history option on the portal.
  • Contact the DisCo or vendor with the payment reference; PHED asks for it if the token is not received in 5 minutes.
  • If your card was charged and nothing came, ask the portal for a refund before raising it with your card issuer.

Paying in pounds or in naira

When you pay a Nigerian portal with a UK card, the token is priced in naira and your card issuer converts it to pounds at its own rate, and some UK cards add a foreign transaction fee on top. Paying from a naira balance avoids a conversion on every small purchase.

Over a year of monthly tokens, those fees add up, which is why families who top up often tend to keep a naira balance for bills.

Making it regular

If you top up every month, keep the meter number, DisCo and portal saved so a payment takes a minute. Some families set a fixed monthly amount and a day for it. For other bills, see buying Nigerian airtime and data from the UK and paying regular naira bills from a UK salary.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account can be opened from any country and holds NGN alongside GBP (multicurrency). Bills in the app include electricity, paid from your naira balance, and you convert pounds only when you choose with Swap, where the rate is shown first and the fee on its own line.

Questions people ask

Can I buy an Ikeja Electric or EKEDC token from London?

Yes, through the DisCo's online channel or a naira account's bills menu. You need the meter number. Whether a UK card works on a given portal is not stated, so try a small amount first.

How do I send the token to my parents?

Copy the 20-digit number from the receipt, SMS or email and text it to them. They enter it on the meter keypad.

Why is the meter rejecting the token I bought?

Common causes are a typo, the wrong meter number, or a meter that missed the November 2024 STS update and needs key change tokens entered first.

I paid but did not get a token. What now?

Use the portal's retrieve token option, then contact the DisCo or vendor with the payment reference. PHED, for example, asks you to do this if the token has not arrived in 5 minutes.
