Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Overtrading: how fast growth runs you out of cash

Why a business can double its sales and still run out of money, the warning signs of overtrading, and how to work out the funding gap in naira.

The short answer

Overtrading is when a business takes on more sales than its cash can support: it must pay for stock and costs before customers pay, so every extra naira of sales needs extra cash tied up in stock and debtors. The funding gap is roughly daily cost of sales multiplied by the working capital cycle (stock days plus debtor days minus creditor days), and it grows in line with sales.

Growth looks like the answer to every money problem, so it is surprising when a business with full order books cannot pay its suppliers. The reason is timing. Profit is earned when you sell; cash comes when the customer pays. In between, you have bought stock, paid staff and covered rent. The faster you grow, the more cash sits in that gap.

The working capital cycle

Stock days
How long goods sit before they sell: stock ÷ cost of sales × days.
Debtor days
How long customers take to pay: debtors ÷ sales × days.
Creditor days
How long you take to pay suppliers: creditors ÷ purchases × days.
Cash cycle
Stock days + debtor days − creditor days.

The longer the cycle, the more cash each naira of sales needs. See the cash conversion cycle and working capital explained.

The funding gap maths

Example only. A wholesaler sells ₦10,000,000 a month to retailers, with cost of sales at 75% (₦7,500,000 a month, or ₦250,000 a day on a 30-day month). Stock sits 45 days, retailers pay in 30 days, and suppliers are paid in 15 days. Cash cycle = 45 + 30 − 15 = 60 days.

NowAfter sales double
Monthly sales₦10,000,000₦20,000,000
Daily cost of sales₦250,000₦500,000
Cash cycle60 days60 days
Working capital needed₦15,000,000₦30,000,000
Extra cash required₦15,000,000
Monthly gross profit₦2,500,000₦5,000,000

Doubling sales needs ₦15 million more in stock and debtors. Even the higher gross profit of ₦5 million a month, before overheads, would take three months to fund that gap with nothing else spent. If growth is fast, the cash runs out first.

Cutting the cycle helps. If the same business got retailers to pay in 20 days and stock to turn in 35, the cycle becomes 35 + 20 − 15 = 40 days, and at doubled sales the need falls to ₦20,000,000 (₦500,000 × 40).

A short case

Example only. A uniform maker with ₦3 million a month of sales wins a contract to supply three schools: ₦12 million of uniforms, delivered in August, paid 60 days after delivery. Fabric and trimmings (₦7 million) must be paid upfront, and four extra tailors cost ₦1.2 million over two months. Between June and October the business needs ₦8.2 million it does not have, on top of its normal costs. The contract is profitable on paper, but without a deposit, an agreed facility or shorter payment terms it would leave the business unable to pay its regular suppliers and staff. Asking the schools for a 40% deposit (₦4.8 million) would cut the gap to ₦3.4 million.

Warning signs

  • Sales and profit rising, but the bank balance falling or the overdraft always at its limit.
  • Paying suppliers later each month, or being put on cash-only terms.
  • Delaying salaries, tax or pension payments to cover stock.
  • Taking larger orders with longer payment terms to win them.
  • Stock-outs on best sellers because there is no cash to reorder.
  • The owner spending most of the day moving money between accounts.

Inflation makes it worse

When supplier prices rise, the same volume of stock costs more naira, so the working capital gap widens even without growth. The NBS put headline inflation at 14.63% year on year for September 2026 (reported by Voice of Nigeria); check the latest monthly release. A business whose cost of sales rises by that percentage needs roughly that much more working capital to stand still.

Tax as you grow

Growth can also bring a tax bill that was not there before. PwC's Nigeria summary (reviewed May 2026) lists a 0% rate for small companies with thresholds of ₦100 million turnover and ₦250 million fixed assets, and gives the prevailing company income tax rate as 30%. Once a company passes the small company limits, profits become taxable at the rate set by law. Plan for that cash in your forecast; see small company tax under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. This is information, not tax advice.

What to do: steps

  1. Calculate your cash cycle and funding gap at today's and planned sales.
  2. Build a 13-week cash forecast before accepting a large new order.
  3. Ask big new customers for a deposit or shorter terms, and invoice promptly.
  4. Negotiate longer supplier terms, using your payment record.
  5. Clear slow stock to release cash.
  6. Arrange funding before you need it: a lender offers a facility based on your figures, and you decide whether to accept the terms after seeing the full cost.
  7. Grow in steps you can fund, rather than taking every order.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account offers invoicing and bank-transfer checkout (free) to help customers pay faster, and the Finance agent prepares cash summaries for a person to approve.

Questions people ask

What is overtrading in business?

Taking on more sales than your cash can fund. Each sale ties up cash in stock and unpaid invoices until customers pay, so rapid growth can exhaust the bank balance.

How do I know if my business is overtrading?

Rising sales with a falling bank balance, paying suppliers later, stock-outs on best sellers and constant overdraft use are common signs.

How do I calculate my working capital need?

Multiply daily cost of sales by your cash cycle (stock days + debtor days − creditor days). ₦250,000 a day × 60 days needs ₦15m.

Can a profitable business run out of cash?

Yes. Profit is recorded when you sell, but cash arrives when customers pay. Fast growth widens that gap.
