Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Opening a medical practice as a Nigerian doctor

Licence, entity, credentialing and start-up money: the order a Nigerian-trained physician follows to open a private practice, with Georgia as the example.

The short answer

You need a full medical licence in the state where you will practise (in Georgia, graduates of international schools need at least three years of ACGME-accredited training and ECFMG certification, and the initial licence fee is $500), then a practice entity that state law allows doctors to use, then credentialing with the insurers who will pay you, which usually takes months. Plan start-up money for the premises, equipment, staff, malpractice cover and working capital until insurer payments start to arrive.

1. The licence comes first

Nigerian-trained doctors usually reach practice ownership after US residency, so the licence question is about a full, unrestricted state licence rather than a training licence. Each state medical board sets its own rules. The Georgia Composite Medical Board's physician page is a useful model:

  • Graduates of international or non-approved medical schools need 'at least 3 years of ACGME-accredited training'; graduates of US board-approved schools need one year.
  • ECFMG certification, where it applies to foreign graduates, is gathered through the Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS), which the Board requires.
  • USMLE score transcripts are released to the Board through the FSMB, not uploaded by you.
  • Verifications are needed for every healthcare licence you have ever held outside Georgia, which includes your MDCN registration in Nigeria.
  • Non-English transcripts need certified translation.
  • The initial full licence fee is $500, plus a non-refundable 3.15% card processing fee. Applications must be completed within 360 days of starting.

Start gathering Nigerian documents early. Licence verifications and school records from Nigeria are often the slowest part. If you plan to see patients in several states or by telehealth across state lines, look at the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact; the Georgia board lists a Compact licence route.

2. Choose the practice entity

Many states require doctors to practise through a professional entity, such as a professional corporation or professional LLC, owned only by licensed physicians. Check your state's rules before you file anything with the Secretary of State. Tax treatment follows the entity: a single-member LLC is disregarded by default and its profit is taxed on Schedule C with self-employment tax, while a corporation, or an LLC electing S corporation status, pays you wages. See LLC or corporation and paying yourself from an LLC.

3. Credentialing and enrolment

Most patients pay through insurance, so a practice without payer contracts has very few patients. The usual sequence, which takes months, is:

  1. Obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) for yourself and one for the practice.
  2. Obtain DEA registration for each practice location if you will prescribe controlled substances, plus any state controlled-substance registration your state requires.
  3. Complete a credentialing profile that insurers use to check your training, licence and history.
  4. Apply to each commercial insurer you want to work with, and enrol with Medicare and your state's Medicaid programme if you will see those patients.
  5. Sign the contracts and confirm the effective dates before you book insured patients.

Many new practices hire a credentialing service. Whatever you do, track every application with its submission date.

4. Start-up money (illustrative)

Example only, for a small primary care office leased in a suburban medical building. All figures are placeholders except where shown as official; replace them with quotes.

ItemExample amount
Georgia initial licence fee (official, before card fee)$500
Lease deposit and fit-out$40,000
Medical equipment and furniture$35,000
Electronic health record and billing software, first year$12,000
Malpractice and other insurance, first-year deposits$15,000
Staff wages and running costs for four months before insurer payments settle$100,000
Total example$202,500

The arithmetic: $500 + $40,000 + $35,000 + $12,000 + $15,000 + $100,000 = $202,500. The SBA lists professional liability insurance, covering 'malpractice, errors, and negligence', among standard business covers; for a doctor it is central. Hiring staff brings Form I-9, W-4 and payroll duties; see hiring your first employee. For financing, see SBA loans.

What to check first

  • Is your licence full and unrestricted in the state where you will open?
  • Does your state require a professional entity, and who may own it?
  • Does your immigration status allow you to work for your own practice?
  • Which insurers dominate your area, and how long do they say credentialing takes?
  • How many months of costs can you fund before insurer payments arrive?

Joining or buying instead of starting

Starting from nothing is not the only route. Some Nigerian physicians join an existing group as a partner, buy a retiring doctor's practice with its patients, staff and payer contracts, or start part-time alongside a hospital job while credentialing completes. Each route changes how much capital you need and how quickly income arrives. If you buy, have the records, contracts and liabilities checked by a lawyer and accountant before you sign; see buying an existing business.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not finance medical practices. If you also support family in Nigeria or run a clinic project there, a Pryme Business Account holds USD and NGN with local account details, and its Finance agent prepares payments for your approval. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian doctor open a private practice in the US?

Yes, once they hold a full licence in that state and their immigration status allows them to work in their own practice. Many states also require a professional entity owned by licensed physicians.

How many years of residency does Georgia require for international medical graduates?

The Georgia Composite Medical Board requires at least three years of ACGME-accredited training for graduates of international or non-approved schools.

How much does a Georgia medical licence cost?

The Board lists an initial full licence fee of $500, plus a non-refundable 3.15% card processing fee.

How long does insurance credentialing take for a new practice?

It varies by insurer and is often several months. Apply early and do not book insured patients until contracts are effective.
